The No. 17 University of Oklahoma® Hockey club exploded for five goals in the second period on their way to a convincing 6-3 win over the United States Naval Academy Saturday night in Oklahoma City. In an extremely exciting and fast-paced first period, defenseman Mark Tylka put OU on the board with a shot from the point that found its way into the Navy net at 12:47. Minutes later, Navy tied the score at 1 on a short-handed breakaway goal. Navy took a 2-1 lead in the second period before the Sooners’ offense erupted. Kelly Forbes tipped in a shot from the point to tie the game at 2. Laddy Tresl scored the prettiest goal of the night when he went top shelf on a breakaway to put OU up 3-2. Matt Pangrac ripped a slapper from the top of the right circle that nailed a post and the Navy goaltender’s back before going in to give the Sooners a 4-2 lead. And in the last minute of play in the second period, Shawn Webber and Ross Morgan scored 17 seconds apart to give OU a commanding 6-2 lead. Navy scored with six seconds to go in the period to make the score 6-3 and that was the end of the scoring for the evening even though there was another 20 minutes to play. Neither team scored on the power play tonight, Navy going 0 for 7 while OU was 0 for 6. Sooners goaltender Aaron Schmeilski stopped 16 of the 19 Navy shots he faced while starting Navy goaltender Ryan Dobie stopped 8 of the 14 OU shots he faced before being replaced for the third period by Sean Ublacker who stopped all 7 Sooners shots he faced.

The win improves OU’s record to 13-8-2 while Navy drops to 10-10-0. The Sooners will take on Navy again in a special early evening Sunday game at 5:00 P.M. at Blazers Ice Centre.
