hmm, the article i read (the one you linked) just says they cant prove it did happen.....but cant prove it didnt either...

Well, I think what they are saying is that they didn't find any evidence of anyone from the Donner family resorting to cannabalism. They were actually camped about 6 miles away from the main group due to a broken axle.

There are still signs of cannabalism at the other site, I believe. Now, why the whole expedition got called the "Donner party" I don't know. Maybe they were the biggest family in the group, or the leaders, or something.
