View Full Version : The Crunge

The Crunge, a Zeppelin song off of their 73 album... It's one of the best songs ever. I think the time signature switches back and forth between 4/4 and 5/4 or something.

I love Zep but never liked that song, and I tried.

Plant's voice just annoys me a lot on that one.

Bonham's drums are probably the best component and then JPJ's bass.

The Ocean on that album is much better. :)

Where's that confounded bridge?

David Earl

Plant's voice on that one sounds like his usual self to me. Wikipedia says the song was made spontaneously with JB laying down the beat then JPJ adding the bass. Those guys were talented.

i love that album, but that is easily my least favorite song on it

ditto on The Ocean PH, that one RMFO

i always thought it was funny that that album, Houses of the Holy, doesn't have the song of the same name

I think I read The Crunge was James Brown inspired sans "the bridge".

Cool. I just found out "sans" doesn't mean what I thought it meant.

I should have said "as in".

Always loved it.

Anyone remember that one??

Also - Just freaking wig out on the guitar riff on "In the Light".

Sooner04 LOVES The Crunge.*

It's one of my faves too, but The Wanton Song is #1, followed closely by The Lemon Song. If The Crunge was renamed The Crunge Song, maybe it'd be #3.

*Special thanks to SoonerFans.com and Led Zeppelin for helping make that combination of words make sense.

I gotta give my 2 cents here.

Anything Zepp kicks f'n ***. Presence is my favorite from them. It's just got so much more emotion from Plant's voice because he was basically crippled at the time. And the guitar work with Page even with all the Smack he was doing at the time. Achilles Last Stand or Tea for One is probably my favorite. Those 2 songs are Page at his finest. One was the best blues Page ever did. And ALS was just his heaviest song overall(helped that it was 10 minutes long)

I would be hard pressed to choose an absolute favorite Zep album or song. Most of them strike some chord or another with me. I love them all.......but some more so than others.

King Crimson

the Crunge is a lousy funk tune. Bonham was a great ROCK drummer, but his funk effort (Crunge) and reggae effort (Dancing Days) on H of the H are not a success.

i love Zep as much as the next guy, but if you grew up listening to the real JB and Sly.....Bonham ain't the "funky drummer".

side note: i can honestly say that i've never met anyone who thought Presence was the best LZ record. Nobody's Fault but Mine rocks.....but, i don't know about that.

the best straight blues Jimmy Page plays is on I or II, and possibly "i'm gonna crawl" on In Through the Out Door....which is in the slow blues genre.

the best straight riffs are on Physical Graffiti.

There's not really a Zepp song or album I can dislike so I can't disagree with anyone saying this is the best Zepp Song/Album. But I just like Presence above the others. I could go on an explain it more in depth but the songs on Presence are just as good it can get. I would probably say of those 7 songs 6 are in my top 10 favorite Zepp tunes. Heck I'm listening to the album as I type right now.

Nick Zep is right in saying ALS is excellent. I love what they do with the time signatures on that and have no idea how John Henry kept up with it all.

I've got everything live from Zeppelin either downloaded or bought. Anything from about 77 or 78 is average at best. This was probably the height of Page's Smack use and it showed. Plant's voice couldn't sing some of the earlier songs also(like Over the Hills and Far Away) anything from 75 and before is pretty good though.

It's too hard to rank them numerically after my top few, so here's my Top 25 (in no particular order after 2):

1) The Wanton Song
2) The Lemon Song
Bring it on Home
How Many More Times
Out on the Tiles
Heartbreaker
Over the Hills and Far Away
Whole Lotta Love
Since I've Been Lovin You (their best true-blues song)
Stairway to Heaven
The Crunge
Four Sticks
Going to California
Black Dog
When the Levee Breaks
In My Time of Dying
Bron-Yr-Aur
Ten Years Gone
In the Light
Nobody's Fault But Mine
Hot Dog

In the Light

I think In The Light is one of the songs they never played live as Led Zeppelin. Or atleast that I've found. The instrument JPJ used was one that couldn't go on the road so they couldn't play it. I believe they Page and Plant played it in Unledded though.

Excellent point.

Since Jimmy was such an excellent producer, how the heck could they not hear that freaking squeaking bass pedal?

It's on most all their albums too but more obvious on certain songs.

I might add - Bonzo was using a Ludwig Speed King - and having used one for years as a kid, I can attest they are real squeak prone but WD40 can stop it.

I've got a 45 minute version of Dazed somewhere that's mindblowing.

The best live song from Zepp I have is Trampled Underfoot that's about 10 minutes long.

I've also got an entire show from I believe it's 77 or 78 that's impressive.

On the Zeppelin DVD the best part of it is the black and white part on some TV show. I think it was their last TV Show appearance as a band.
