No moisture in the air couple with lack of a suitable lifting force.

We're downstream of a persistent upper-level ridge.

Nah. They're not nearly as much fun to admonish.

The good news is the the upper level ridge broke down; the bad news is that the flow is pretty zonal.

I'm not sure, but I think md just posted something NSFW.

You know what the jet stream is, right? In order to get really good weather (storms and ****) the jet stream has to dip southward just upstream of us. This is called a trough, and it causes rising motion in the atmosphere (don't ask) and southeast winds to bring in moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. We have the opposite situation right now: ridging from Montana to New Mexico.

The jet stream moves around like a sine curve, alternating ridges and troughs, just like ocean waves. Usually these waves move eastward, but sometimes they stagnate and the troughs and ridges hang around for awhile. A ridge is just the area between two troughs (and vice versa), so while we're getting dry weather they're getting unsettled weather on the coasts.

OK, that was a good explanation. So the next question is what are you and your peeps gonna do about it? We need rain!!!!11!!!!!11!!

See if you can identify the troughs and ridges:

The ridge has broken down a bit last few days (which is why we got snow up here Monday night), but it's really going to build going into the weekend. It looks like what we call an "omega block", after the shape of the Greek letter. However, five days out (the last image) there's a wicked awesome trough headed our way so we should see something interesting happen.

Can we just hoist up a plexiglass sheet the size of 5 or 6 football fields and re-direct the jet stream? Cause that'd be awesome.
