I get a salary offer at lunch for a new position. I hate my current job enough that even if it's a minor pay cut I'm taking it-but here's hoping it's a raise...

I did. The problem is that what I was doing changed dramatically and the conditions under which I was doing it deteriorated drastically. The support needed from senior management has gone down the tubes. Believe it or not, one of my job accountabilities now is how well I play office politics-there's an actual survey the everyone fills out once a quarter that's basically a "how much do you like every other department" contest.

Since I don't put up with petty bull**** at work (that's what this place is for) and I demand that back-office people do their damn jobs themselves instead of making my salespeople do it, I got hammered by the back-office people.

So, never mind the fact that I increased sales at my branch by 50% over the prior year. Never mind the fact that since I've taken my branch over a year ago it went from a $10k/month loser to a $25k/month profitmaker (a mere 82% above plan, btw). Because I didn't play footsie with every ******* in the back office I'm about to get a **** review.

Not only that, but I'm frankly tired of managing a branch that's open from 8am-6pm Monday-Saturday. I can't tell you then number of 12 hour days/6 day weeks I've put in over the last several months.

Bump...in salary yet?????

Frozen Sooner
1/10/2006, 11:21 PM
Sooo....here's the deal:

I made $58k in salary last year and 9k in production bonuses and incentives-so all told I made $67k.

Guy comes in with a lowball offer of $4k/month salary then move to a salary+commission structure after six months.

Told him no freakin' way and countered with $6k/month salary for six months then a move to a draw/straight commission structure after six months.

I think what we're going to agree on is $5k/month for six months then go to draw/commission. He's OK with the deal, but he has to talk to the corporate VP he reports to.

I have it on good authority (the VP himself) that he's good with that salary structure-so I should be good to go. Don't want to count chickens yet though.

1. What kind of position would the new job be?
2. I'm assuming you stand to make more on commission than you would on salary?

1. Commercial insurance broker.
2. On straight commission, I'd be looking at 50% of GDC on new business and 25% on old business. I'd be looking in the first year, they'd want me to be hitting about 10k-20k/month in new business.

Watch out for those commission setups. We changed bosses and I went from 17% of profit to 14% under the new jerk. Bad Businessmen tend to decide what they want to pay you and then adjust the commission structure. Its a downhill ride for the business from there.
