View Full Version : Above Normal Utility Bills Thread

I don't normally have hugely expensive utility bills like I've seen some folks talk about on here.....but I also don't have a giant house, so that's part of the reason.

My gas bill last month was $125 which I can't complain about. That's usually about what it is this time of year, maybe a little more. It probably went up somewhat but since December was pretty warm, it wasn't a huge bill.

My electric bill was $100. Usually in the wintertime, my electric bill is no more than $50 or so. Again, $100 isn't too bad but it seems like a pretty big jump considering the electric usage isn't as much in the winter. In summary, mine have gone up but nothing crazy-like.

Any of you goobers have outrageous utility bills lately? I know they've been warning us for months now. My most expensive bill is still cable/internet.

My electric bill was $205.00, highest it's ever been but our house is all electric.

That doesn't sound bad at all for an all electric house. Do you have AEP out there in the sticks?

AEP? I don't know, but my Electric company is OG&E and we have a heatpump that does pretty well for a 2500 sqft home. I was paying almost double in utility bills when I lived in Tulsa.

AEP is the electric company here.

Your electric bills were higher because a good part of the electricity generated in this area is from natural gas generators. When the price of natural gas goes up, the price of the electricity you are charged goes up as well.

Gas - $170
Elec - $40

Our gas bill was pretty massive last month, but then I realized we'd been using the gas fireplace plenty (read - almost every night). So we've toned down on that. Our overall usage of gas/electricity has gone down ever since we bought a programmable thermostat.

I noticed the same thing this month. My juice bill usually is less than $50 in the winter
but this month its $75. It's that fuel charge line, which varies each month. Probably what Skysooner is talking about. I am turning my porch light off at night and reading by candlelight in protest.

Exactly, the utilities have the right to add in a Misc. item called a Fuel Cost Adjustment (or similarly named) that varies according to what their acquisition cost for natural gas (and/or electricity) is. Most utilities don't generate their own power, so they buy it from wholesalers and that price varies with natural gas price.

gas and electric are no where near what the water bills are in washington. its rained for 25 straight days and i still pay well over $100 a month. in the summer, they absolutely destroy you with your sewer bill (1/2 of your water charged). we easily run over $300/month and that is with a sprinkler system that uses about 1/4 of the water most people use on their lawn.

Yeah, but doesn't your employer pick up that tab too?

Well, I'm not sure what the bill is for the house, but the 2 propane bottles cost about $30 to fill up. That'll last about 6 days.

I received my ONG (gas) bill yesterday and something must be wrong.

The bill was over $300

I have a 1600SF home...how can that be? I mean it is an older home and a bit drafty but that is impossible! My neighbor called me when she opened hers and said the same thing.

going to call them right now.

Good luck with that Chick! My gas bill was $150.00 and electicity was only $58.20. If I'd get off my a** and seal this place up, It would probaby not be so much.

Meter reader, maybe? We have OEC & some months we're billed for 30 days, sometimes 23, sometimes 35. It all depends when his lazy *** decides to read the meters.

I have gas heat, but the bill was only $95.35...not much higher than normal for this time of year, but it has been a warm month. I'm sure the programmable thermostat has a lot do with that, plus the fact that I have it set for 68. Electric was about $75 if memory serves me correctly, which is a little higher than average, so I guess I won't complain too much.

Of course, having a small house probably helps out most of all.

I dont know why the price of natural gas skyrockets like it does.We have an abundance of natty gas in Oklahoma.
I guess the big companies simply shut off the valves when they want to make outrageous profits.
