SOONERS WEEKLY
For the Week of January 9, 2006
SOONERS SPLIT WITH No. 7 WEBER STATE
NO. 17 OKLAHOMA HOSTS NAVY THIS WEEKEND

THIS WEEK’S GAMES - The No. 17-ranked University of Oklahoma® hockey club (12-8-2) host the Midshipmen from the United States Naval Academy (10-9-0) in a Saturday/Sunday series this weekend. Saturday’s contest begins at the normal 7:30 P.M. start time while the Sunday night game will begin at 5:00 P.M. Last season, the Sooners traveled to Annapolis for a pair of games against Navy at historic Dahlgren Hall on the USNA grounds. Navy won the first game 4-2 but the Sooners showed some character in the second game, coming back late in the third period from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game at 3-3 and having the better scoring opportunities in the five minute overtime.

LAST OU HOCKEY GAMES – The Sooners’ last games were this past weekend when the No. 7-ranked Weber State University Wildcats came to Oklahoma City for a pair of games. Weber State’s power play outgunned Oklahoma’s power play on Friday night, cashing in four times while the Sooners’ power play converted only twice, to lead the Wildcats to a 4-2 win over OU. On Saturday night, the Sooners exacted a measure of revenge as they dominated Weber State for much of the game and held the Wildcats’ power play unit in check to win by a score of 5-1.

SCOUTING THE MIDSHIPMEN – Navy’s last games were this past weekend as they hosted No. 3 University of Rhode Island for a pair of games. The Midshipmen came close to knocking off one of the best teams in the country but ended up losing both games to URI by scores of 3-2 (OT) and 4-3, respectively. The Navy scoring attack is led by junior forwards Kevin Krmpotich and Chris Schnappinger and senior forward co-captain Bill Knips. The Midshipmen defense is anchored by senior team co-captain Sam Kunst and juniors Jim Doherty and Joe Liles (brother of NHL Colorado Avalanche defenseman John-Michael Liles). In net, senior goaltender Ryan Dobie has been the man between the pipes for the Midshipmen this season.

RANKINGS – The Sooners are currently ranked 17th in the nation in the latest ACHA Coaches Division 1 ranking while Navy would be ranked 22nd if the rankings were extended that far. In the unofficial computer ranking of ACHA D1 clubs, Oklahoma is currently 13th and Navy is 28th. The next ACHA Coaches D1 ranking is scheduled to be released on Friday, January 20th, 2006.

MAKE A NOTE – Due to travel issues for the Navy team, this weekend’s series will be a Saturday/Sunday affair instead of the usual Friday/Saturday game pairing. There is no OU Hockey game this Friday evening. The Saturday game will begin at the regular OU Hockey face-off time of 7:30 P.M. while the puck will drop for the Sunday game at 5:00 P.M.

SOONERS HOME GAMES ON THE AIR – All remaining OU Hockey home games will be broadcast over the internet this season. Join Caleb Fox, a junior from Rowlett, Texas (play-by-play), and Keaton Fuchs, a junior from Norman (color), as they bring the hard-hitting, fast-paced action that is Sooners Hockey to you over the internet throughout the 2005-2006 season. OU Hockey broadcasts begin 15 minutes prior to faceoff. Oklahoma hockey fans can listen to the OU Hockey internet broadcast by going to either www.icehockey.ou.edu or www.broadcastmonsters.com and clicking the appropriate link.

HOME SWEET HOME – Although formally known as Blazers Ice Centre, when the Sooners take the ice to “Oklahoma!” and “Boomer Sooner” blares over the sound system after every Sooners goal, the rink transforms into the “Sooners Ice Center”. With the exception of this Sunday’s contest, all Sooners home games are played at 7:30 P.M. at Blazers Ice Centre, 8000 South I-35, in Oklahoma City.

TICKETS – Individual tickets for all OU Hockey games are on sale now and can be purchased at Blazers Ice Centre. Call 631-3307 or 631-2709 for additional information.

PRACTICE SCHEDULE – The Sooners practice this week at the Blazers Ice Centre on Monday through Thursday from 4:30-6:00 P.M.
