My boss (who now lives in Switzerland) bought us a freaking espresso machine.

Each pellet costs 50 cents so I figure I will use about 2 thousand of them this year.

What'd you get?

I got the luxury of working on Christmas and recieving approx. 50 dollars in gift certificates..
However, to be fair to the company we get our bonuses generally late february early march.

A Christmas Bonus.

Or, as not to offend the lesser intelligent that require politically correct language, a holiday bonus.

My wife got her car paid off. That was cool.

last year I got $2500, this year I changed companies in September and this company gives bonuses at the end of January. I'm not expecting anything this year being as I've only been here for 25% of the year.

What's the point of a Christmas Bonus? If the company is willing to pay you that extra amount why not just give you a raise?

Pieces Hit
1/9/2006, 04:02 PM
Because a raise is permanent.

Bonuses fluctuate or vanish at their whim.

Boy I got an espresso buzz right now.

At the last company I was at raises were almost automatic at 4-5% of your salary. The bonus was divvied up by how much money the company made last year, how long you had been there, your position, your job's safety performance and how much stock you owned in the company.

For the employee, getting a bonus is nice as you get it all at once, minus 40% for Uncle Sam whereas if you got $2400 as a raise you would get it at $200/mo minus 20% (whatever your bracket is) for taxes and the employer has to pay burden on that salary.

The thing is - I really needed that for some of these Doctor bills and the dildo of a manager told me to expect one.

Dissapointed!

This is a screw job for the employee. You have to pay the extra taxes, and you could have been investing or earning interest on that money over the previous twelve months.

While appropriate for you, that'd have to be the worst Christmas bonus evar.

not exactly. In one scenario, yes. In many, no.

I know people like getting bonuses but it really frustrates me when they come to expect it........like it's owed to them. I remember working for a big oil company back in the early eighties and not getting squat except maybe a frozen turkey.

If you expect a bonus then that means your company's doing well and making alot of money if not don't expect one.

You got old person diapers? That is strange..unless you really need them, then its really practical.

I work for the state....what is this Christmas bonus you speak of?

This is exactly wrong. You'd have to pay the taxes anyway. Getting the lump sum allows you to invest it. Getting paid in drips and drabs is the succ.

Oh, I'm self-employed. My "bonus" is what got disappeared into Uncle Sam's fisk. If everyone paid taxes like we self-employed mofos, there'd be a revolution.

We get merit bounuses at mid and end of year based upon performance. When we were actually hitting our wall street projections, my wife's bonus was usually around 50% of my yearly salary. We're going to miss that this year.

Unless you count "education." Pshaw.

Graduate students = students when it's an employee holiday, employees when it's a student holiday.
