OKLAHOMA 5, WEBER STATE 1

The No. 17-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club played smart hockey tonight and took it to visiting No. 7 Weber State University, beating the Wildcats 5-1 in Oklahoma City. The Sooners scored the first even-strength goal of the weekend at 4:33 of the first period when Kelly Forbes slammed home a pass from Justin Hall into the WSU net to put OU up 1-0. The Sooners added two more goals in the second period, getting a nice goal from Laddy Tresl at 5:13 and an unassisted power play goal from Bryan Jewell at 15:28 to put OU up 3-0 over the Wildcats at the end of two periods of hard-hitting action. Early in the third, it seemed as if Weber State was going to be on the power play for the first half of the period and the Wildcats did notch a power play goal at 6:57 to make it a 3-1 game. But as the period wore on, Weber State’s frustration manifested itself in the form of penalties, especially in the last five minutes of the game. The Sooners took full advantage, getting power play goals from Kyle Allan at 16:56 and from Danny Force at 19:26, to secure a 5-1 Sooners victory. Weber State’s power play, incredible the night before, was only 1 for 9 tonight while OU was 3 for 8 with the man advantage. Sooners goaltender Aaron Schmeilski stopped 31 of the 32 Weber State shots he faced while Wildcats goaltender Kyle Gover stopped only 30 of the 35 OU shots he faced.

The win improves OU’s record to 12-8-2 while loss gives Weber State a record of 15-5-1. The Sooners host the Midshipmen from the United States Naval Academy next Saturday at 7:30 P.M. at Blazers Ice Centre.
