Back in the mid-80s, I was working for a wholesale company in Sulphur that sold candy and tobacco and such to stores. A regular stop on my route was the snack bar at Arbuckle Wilderness.

In order to get into the back entrance of the snack bar, you had to go through this big wooden gate that hid stuff from sight of the tourists. So, I went back there, grabbed my box of goodies and ran in the back door, just trying to get out of the late July heat as fast as I could.

When I came back out, it was like a giant, putrid fist of stink hit me square in the nose. I don't know how I missed it when I was going into the building, unless the wind was just blowing from the other direction. The first thing that popped into my head was, "damn, somebody left a dead horse out in the sun."

Nope, it wasn't a dead horse. It was a dead zebra that was in the back of a pickup truck parked on the other side of a juniper tree in front of my truck. I don't know how long he'd been dead, but he looked about ready to pop in that hundred degree heat, and the blow flies were having an orgy on all of his orifices.

I could never go into their gift shop/snack bar again without smelling that dead zebra.
