He's in NY on business, called me from Tiffany's.

him: Hey. I'm in Tiffany's. You know what that is?
me: uhh, YEAH! DUH
him: what?
me: JEWELRY, lamps, etc.
him: yeah, I guess it's a girl thing. I thought I'd buy you something. I found a silver necklace with a "Patrick" (Starfish from Spongebob) charm on it. Would you like that?
me: huh? a starfish charm??
him: yeah. it's silver. would you like me to buy it for you?
me: not really. it's not something I'd wear (I'm into really "out there" modern jewelry, and even though I have a saltwater fish tank, I'm not into wearing it around my neck)
him: really? you don't want me to buy it, or you wouldn't like it?"
me: both.
him: seriously. I'll buy it for you. would you like it?
me: no. please don't.
him: if you were here with me I'd let you pick out something and buy it for you.
me: You can't afford what I'd want, you'd be paying for it the rest of your life if you tried to buy it there.
him: yeah, you're probably right. do you want anything?
me: you know what I want (I've been hinting strongly for months), but don't even BEGIN to try buying it from there. Just save that money and put it in on something I would WEAR (like a RING!)
him: ok. I guess you're right.

now, I love jewelry, but I wear one of a kind, artistic, "out there" stuff. He knows this. I was so confused as to why he'd pick out a starfish, even though I do like fish and such. It's NOT something I'd EVER wear, even if it was from T & CO. sheesh!

Tho, in reality, I like getting her the stuff. And it's always easy to know what BIG gifts she wants...

Expensive girlfriends AND I like to splurge/spoil, but nothing over 250.00 from that place. An engagement ring from Tiffany is one of the most foolhardy decisions a man can make.

I agree. I'd much rather have a bigger diamond from somewhere else. If it's square, large, and sparkles, I'd be happy.

I bought my wife something from Tiffany's in NY years ago, on my first trip to the City. Pretty much anything from that place is pretty cool. The little blue box is a guy's guarantee for some action on Christmas night.

I love tiffany's my only time to New York a couple of years ago that was the first place I went. It really hasn't changed much from what you see in Breakfast at Tiffany's. I have a couple of things from there but my favorite is the cross that my mom gave me on my 18th birthday. I wear it every day.

Actually, I'm a no diamond girl. I watched a "60 Minutes" story on the diamond industry when I was in high school, and it scarred me. I've refused to own a diamond since then. When I told Mr. NMS I didn't want a diamond, he actually tried to pressure me into one (I think he was worried that his family woudl think he was unmanly or something if he didn't buy a big rock:rolleyes: ). I have a nice platinum band, which I can actually wear to work--I never would have worn a big diamond to work.

And, TD2K--my husband just called from Target to ask what brand of toilet paper I wanted. Enjoy the Tiffany's calls while you can....:D

That's fine, but a large medium to medium-high would not be in the same price range as the smaller high to very-high. That was my only point, would you guys prefer quality or size (in regards to diamonds;))?

When I went out looking for my wife's ring, I decided to go with the highest quality I could afford. It ended up being only 1 carat, but it is absolutely stunning and other women she meets seem to be mesmerized by it. I could have spent the same money and gotten a 3 carat or so, but all of those just looked like glass compared to the one I settled on.

Once I get into the store I may change my mind, I've never been shopping for an engagement ring. BUT, what I have in mind is 1 to 1.5 princess cut solitare in a very modern, clean platinum setting, as high in quality (sparkly) as he can afford/is willing to pay for.

This whole engagement ring thing is totally new to him, in Morocco the wives get a gold belt.

I would push for quality rather than size. When my wife gets with her friends, they all have bigger rings (hers is something like .85c), but even the nice diamonds look yellow compared to hers. It's ridiculous the difference when you see them side by side.

Does she cook - always? Does she clean - always? Does she come to poppa - always? Does she demand/want/yearn for a big-assed diamond? If your answers aren't yes, yes, yes, and hell no, then she ain't worth keeping around.

and he wants to get married, has for months. He just doesn't understand the whole engagement process. It's almost like he thinks I'm lying about him buying me a ring, we are engaged for a few months, and THEN get married.

i don't expect expensive and worthless ****.
but i might expect someone to help me do dishes, especially if i cook after a long day at the office.

A long day at the office? You don't even work. And if by "help me do the dishes" you mean put his dirty plate up by the sink then I'm all over it. I'll fix the dishwasher when it breaks, but don't expect me to learn how to run the damn thing. Same goes with those fancy digital ovens and stoves. I'll buy the best one out there, but I ain't gonna learn how to push all those damned buttons. Except, of course, on the microwave. Cause I gotta heat up all the prepared food you leave in the freezer when you have to leave town for something.

td2k,

So you get a big ol' ugly expensive ring. What good is it? You look at it and do the my preciousssssss dealio? Meh. How about he spend the same money on a great vacation. A ring like you're wanting runs in the thousands of $$. You can take a hell of a trip, or buy something very useful for that kinda jack. Be reasonable here.

Keep in mind, money is relative.

My boss buys $250 shirts because he can. I don't because I can't.

Dude, you're missing the point. I could buy a big *** ugly ring, but I choose not to. No point. If she leaves your ***, you're out. If she stays, you're out. Big waste. And anything over about $100 on a shirt is excessive.

I hate to bring this up again, but the way you talk about and demean your boyfriend to a bunch of strangers, it sounds like you should be buying him the ring.

at least I'm not bitchin about whorns constantly like many fellow posters. :texan:

so he can't cook or mow the lawn (which I'll be teaching him how to do this spring). big deal. there are lots of other things he CAN do that make up for it.

hmm... seems to me getting engaged should be more about your relationship and where you are in life rather than how long you've been together. Some people are ready to get married after a month, some people are ready after 10 years.

and why the **** to people think you have to have an engagement ring to be engaged. It's like that's the defining point of the relationship--would it be any less significant if he proposed and didn't get you a ring?
What if he gave you a big sparkly diamond for the hell of it? would you think you were engaged?

If you know he wants to get married and you know you want to get married and you know you're going to get married, what's the purpose of the ring? really, what's the purpose of the formality of asking? with the ring on your finger you'll be doing the exact same thing you are now--waiting to get married--only you'll have a ring on your finger.

What you're saying is you aren't secure enough with that relationship and the certainty of its future until you have a guy committed enough to shell out for a big*** diamond to remind him of his promise and keep him in check.

at least IMO...

Fine with me, I hate the diamond industry. I've been lobbying for the 2 month salary "engagement cheeseburger" giftcard. It's something that the girl has to buy the boy.

Of course, I may not be in full agreement with this particular post PG, I didn't actually read the whole thing. It was really long.
