yesterday I was watching a D-Day special on the tellie and they mentioned the 501st PIR and their taking out the German 88's at Brecourt Manor. They interviewed Dick Winters and explained the mission just like in the BOB series.
However, you recall the maps that Winters found in one of the bunkers they took out? Turns out it contained the German postions on the entire Normandy coast! It was so important that Lewis Nixon himself took them back to battalion commanders. They were so pleased that Winters got a couple of the first tanks inland and proceeded to guide them to key German postions in the hedgerows, they cleared the place out.
Would have been cool to have seen that in the series. I know I'm being picky, but they left out some good stuff.:)

I don't think they portray it in the series, but I think the end of the episode that occurs in mentions that the map had the gun positions and gives the explanation of why he didn't receive the MoH for that mission

OR

that could have been in the book - I've confused myself now

A Bridge Too Far is a book about Operation Market Garden which was one of the bigger fiascos of the European War post D-Day. It is also a good read.

Pic,

Is the Hiroshima book authored by John Hersey?

Webster's book is a good read, without the platitudes of a court historian such as Ambrose.

yes it is. it makes one's vivid imagination work in a bad way to say the least.

Ambrose spoke of how vital Webster's notes and letters were. Another part about the BOB series is how Webster (Eion Bailey) was dropping f-bombs. His letters stated how much he loathed Army lingo.

Ambrose does the forward in Webster's book. He does discuss how important his contribution in addition to the typical soldier's gripes about army life.

I started re-watching the series when I was getting ready to leave for Phoenix.

I just finished "Why We Fight"

I swear that it gets dusty where I am every damn time I watch it.

I bought it back in the summer but haven't had a chance to start it yet. I chose to read E.B. Sledge's With the Old Breed first and then ran out of free time.

Just finished Webster's book. Awesome read. Especially the time they spent in Austria.
My brother and I talked about how it was too bad he didn't get to see action in the Bulge. Would have been good stuff.

no kidding, absolutely. Ole Web knew his adult libation too didn't he? Certainly a hip cat for his age.
I've got a book: Foot Soldier, A combat infantryman's war in Europe, Roscoe Blunt, Jr.
Dude was a demolitions specialist so he was usually always first into occupied areas. He cleaned up on a ton of items and sent them home by the week.

I'm about halfway through Webster's book, pretty interesting so far.

I found a website where a guy goes through each BoB episode and corrects the mistakes that they made, whether intentionally or not. It's a long read but worth it. There is an incredible amount of info about the 101st on other parts of the site.

I love the part in Holland where they stop to eat breakfast at an apparently abandoned house. They milk cows, take some eggs, and borrow a skillet from inside the house. When they're finished, they wash the skillet and put it back where they got it.

i read this last week, very good book if you're into this subject, it follows right along with the band of brothers series, but goes into greater detail on alot of the stories.
