Never had Thai food before, first time is probably tomorrow. Yes, I'm an effing hillbilly, but is it as hot as I've heard? What's good to order? Thanks in advance.

Description: DOWNTOWN. Home to some of Fayetteville area's exotic fare, this downtowner earns high marks for its tasty vegetarian and traditional Thai dishes and has received numerous accolades from the local press since opening in 2000. The kitchen staff prides itself on using only the freshest available ingredients, including herbs that are ground daily. Start off your meal with an order of spring rolls or mee krob before moving on to more serious matters, like delicious pad Thai with chicken, beef or pork; Thai-style barbecue chicken; scallops sautéed in red curry; or deep-fried fresh red snapper top with curry sauce and mixed vegetables. Patio seating is available when it's nice out.

Pretty bad when I've got to go to Arkansas for it.

Try chicken satay for a good appetizer unless you're allergic to peanuts.

i think the curry stuff is harder to screw up than pad thai

but i know a few people that don't like Thai curry with the coconut milk and stuff

green curry is pretty good too. made with coconut milk so it's not too hot. generally they won't light you up without asking in advance.

As has been said, the dish called Pad Thai is a good choice for people who have not eaten Thai food before.

I hated coconut as a kid, love it now. Thanks to everyone for their input, sounds like I'll try the Pad Thai.

anything that says "spicy" "ginger" and sometimes "basil" is usually hot. but generally you can tell them not to make it too hot (at Padthai they ask 1-5. a 2 is usually pretty safe if you don't like spicy food)

my favorites are ginger stirfry or spicy stirfry with steamed rice. And as far as appetizers go, I like spring rolls.

How would a 5 compare to a good hot jalepeno?

I've never had a jalapeno by itself... I don't like green peppers. Have you ever had hell on the red salsa?

I love that salsa, and it might make my nose run a little if I eat a lot of it. Same with queso made with the extra-hot rotel (with jalapenos)

The spicy stir fry at pad thai (a 5) was the first time food had ever actually made my tonsils burn.
Thai spiciness is different because it has great taste, and you don't notice the heat at first. And it builds as you go. You don't think it's very spicy at first, but it builds up as you keep eating. I love it :D

if you can eat jalapenos alone, then the 5 at Padthai shouldn't scare you :D

Basic rules - Thai food is good, just be prepared for some peanuts in there. It might catch you off guard at first, but it's good once you get used to it. Not all Thai is spicy, but when it IS spicy they don't fool around.

Try the chicken, pork, or tofu - stay away from the beef. The Thai (and chinese for that matter) idea of beef is little scrawny bits of beef that any self-respecting hillbilly probably wouldn't even give to his dogs. ;)

How would a 5 compare to a good hot jalepeno?

Hotter, I would think. You might want to go with 3 until you know what you're getting into, or a 4 if you're feeling brave. Pad thai is like lo mein. Red curry is my personal favorite. Let the curry sauce get all up in your sticky rice to counterbalance the heat. Mmmmmm. Chicken with peanuts/cashews is good too, but the restaurants in Norman don't serve that.

There's a great locally owned place here in Edmond that my wife and I frequent. They have a dish called Ground Beef Curry. I get a 2, my wife gets a 3. Served over rice, it's fantastic. I haven't tried it anywhere else though.

Yeah, slightly. It's nice that you and your son do EVERYTHING, but they needed help in a BAD way.

Their menu reminds me of The Cheesecake Factory. Pages and pages. How can he afford to keep that much inventory? It's damn good food, though.

At "Thai Cuisine" in Albuquerque, order the K3. I can only get close to pronouncing it and no way I can remember the name. It is a green curry of some kind. They have heat scales that are: No heat, Mild, Medium, Hot and Thai Hot.
I am a jalapeno eating champion from my college days (find related thread if you must) and I order the medium. The hot is just a bit too hot and I am afraid to try the Thai Hot.

So, you're saying you're a bigger wuss than your wife?

Why bother eating it if it doesn't light you up? I just don't understand why somebody would want to cool down food that's supposed to be served spicy. If you can't eat it "blazin'" you should stick to meat and taters or hamburgers or something.

You ain't really eating Thai food unless you eat it the way the Thais do. You're eating a pussified version of veggies with a little meat thrown in.

Pad Thai is okay for lunch and eating alone. But Thai dishes really should be shared.

I love green curry - Gaeng Keo.

My favourites, though, are:

Tom Yum Gung - spicy, sour soup with shrimp.

Tom Kha Gai - another soup. coconut milk with chicken.

Som Thum Thai - green papaya salad with peanuts and dried shrimp. This IS the quintessential Thai dish.

Laap Mu - spicy ground pork salad.

Pak Boon Fai Daeng - Fried morning glory with garlic and chilies.

Yum Doak Fu - Fried shredded catfish with green mangoes.

Try to order Kao-neo (sticky rice). I doubt if they have it, but maybe. You use your hands to tear off a small bit and mash it in a small ball in your palm and use it to scoop up the Som Thum or Laap. That's typical Northeastern style (E-saan). Thailand's hillbillies, I guess.

For desert, I'd suggest Kao-neo ma-muang (sticky rice with ripe mangoes covered in coconut milk).

Oh, if you're having grilled/fried chicken or pork or beef, see if they have nam jim jou. This is the ultimate dipping sauce. I think it's made from mashed up fried raw rice, fish sauce, lemon juice and chilies. Oh, I'm in heaven if I have kao-neo to dip into nam jim jou.

I could never move back to Oklahoma unless there is good Thai food. So, thanks for the references and the street addresses.

Your manhood? Nah, that's pretty much genetics. Being a wuss doesn't have anything to do with your manhood.

However, anybody can develop a taste for good/spicy foods. You just have to quit being a wuss and get after it. It's like drinking fag drinks. If you're gonna drink, drink booze. Straight up, like God made it. You don't wuss it up with blueberry juice, coke, or ginger ale.

Thai food is supposed to be hot.
