I'm bored..and I figured this might be some fun for some people..the rules are pretty simple... One position player per position, one utility infielder (can play any position, will be considered utility), one utility outfielder, one left handed and right handed starter, and for the sake of balance, one closer and a dh (doesn't necessarily have to have ever played dh in mlb)

C - Josh Gibson
1B - Stan Musial
2B - Jackie Robinson
SS - Honus Wagner
3B - Brooks Robinson
RF - Hank Aaron
CF - Willie Mays
LF - Ted Williams

UI - Rogers Hornsby
UO - Mickey Mantle
DH - Babe Ruth

RHP - Bob Gibson
LHP - Steve Carlton
Closer - Lee Smith

I'll take a shot:

C- Johnny Bench
1B- Stretch McCovey
2B- Ryne Sandberg
SS- Ernie Banks
3B- Mike Schmidt
LF- Williams (if Bonds were ever somehow proven that he was totally clean for his career (I know, what a joke), he's got to go here, IMO)
CF- Mays
RF- Aaron

DH- Ruth
UI- Lou Gehrig
UO- Mantle

RHP- Cy Young
LHP- Warren Spahn
Closer- Rivera (only possible knock would be that he's only been closing 9 years, but during that span he's posted numbers that are un-paralleled by any other reliever during such a span, & he's done it in the more hitter friendly AL)

I thought about Cobb for a while just for the sake of having a leadoff hitter in the lineup, but in the end, putting Cobb in meant taking Mays out & that just AIN'T gonna happen. The closest switch for me was my UO, as I had a heck of a time taking the Mick over Frank Robinson. Maybe their hometowns had something to do with it......;)

that's pretty much why I ended up putting Jackie Robinson on the team...he fills the role of leadoff hitter for this team. I also for a short time struggled with whether or not to go with Josh Gibson, or Roy Campanella for the catcher...ended up going with Gibson because of what he was capable of doing before he passed away too young.

OUThunder; good point

i like Campy, partially because i'm a fan of Dodgers. he started playing pro ball
when he was 16, but due to segregation, not in majoer until he was 26.
2 time mvp, was great hitter & catcher. had wreck, & didn't get to play in LA.

i can't pick a single team. way too many super star players.

i'm old, so i tend to like the older players.

couldn't leave off .367 hitter, all time best.

check me on this, rogers hornsby averaged .400 for 3 or 4 years.

couldn't leave him off.

aaron has to be included, for 2 stats, 755 homers & over 3000 hits that
weren't homers.

i'd rather have stan the man than pete rose. running to first on a BB
didn't accomplish anything.

"running to first on a BB didn't accomplish anything."
Uh, you do know that Musial walked more times than Rose while playing 2 less years than Pete did....;) The biggest reason I left Rose off my team is that he was moved around on the field so much (he played at least 600 games at 1B, 2B, 3B, & in the OF) that it was hard for me to call him the best at any one position. Make no mistake though, as big of a liar as he was regarding the scandal, the guy DID have more hits than anyone who ever played the game, & I'd find no fault with anyone who would put him on their team.

i was talking about "false hustle".

musial's numbers were hurt by WW2.

if you hang around long enough, you end up with the most hits.

compare his batting average(rose) with cobb's average. or stan the man.

if i remember right, musial started out as a pitcher (not in majors) &
then became right-fielder. probably due to having arm of a pitcher.
he only played !b late in his career.

I am a huge Dodgers fan, but I don't think Eric Gagne deserves to be mentioned among the greatest, at least not yet. He has only been a closer for 3 or 4 seasons.

I'd say the lifetime ban hurts Joe's chances...when you consider he really didn't play for very long before the ban, it'd be like putting A-Rod on the team at this point in his career (he'll likely be there at some point in the future.)

think i'd take gehrig over old double x.

need @ least 3 different teams, for different time periods. maybe 4 or 5.

nobodies numbers compare to those of Ruth, or Cobb unless you go
by home runs only.

i don't think you could go wrong with an outfied of aaron, mays & frank
robinson.

what about walter johnson for rhp ??? won 411 games, with a team that was,
for the most part, BAD.

what about warren spahn ?? (not necessarily my choice) all time winningest
lhp, but due to ww2, didn't win a game till he was 25. without war,
would have won at least 400.
