Big 12 coaches choose Young as preseason player of year
DALLAS (AP) — Sophia Young, the leading scorer on Baylor’s national championship team last season, was chosen by Big 12 coaches Wednesday as the league’s preseason player of the year.
The 6-foot-1 guard averaged 18.4 points and 9.3 rebounds as the Bears went 33-3 and won the Big 12 and national titles. She finished third in the conference in scoring and third in rebounding.
Nebraska guard Kiera Hardy, Oklahoma forward Leah Rush, Texas forward Tiffany Jackson and Texas Tech guard Erin Grant join Young on the preseason all-Big 12 team.
Hardy, who averaged 19 points last season, is the league’s top returning scorer. Young is second, Jackson (18.3) is third and Rush (15.5) is fourth. Grant led the Big 12 with 7.03 assists per game last season.
Kansas’ Shaquina Mosley, a 5-foot-6 guard who led Central Arizona Community College to the junior college national championship last season, was named the league’s preseason newcomer of the year and Oklahoma’s Courtney Paris, a 6-foot-4 center from Piedmont (Calif.) High School, was named the freshman of the year.
On a side note, while we're anxiously awaiting the start of men's basketball season, let's not forget the women's team. It should be the beginning of something big (no pun intended) with the arrival of the Paris twins and the good talent we have coming back. Will be interesting to see how everything meshes together.
