Jarhead was one of the best trailers I ever saw that told me virtually nothing about the movie. Its about marines in Iraq in 1991.....thats about all I know.

that's not the plot, that's the setting. I doubt the story is about the war itself--movies are about characters, generally.

Howard's End, The English Patient, Pride and Prejudice. Blech.

Jarhead's based on a memoir by Anthony Swofford. Read it a year or so ago.

I don't remember what gave me the impression, but I remember thinking that it seemed imbellished just a tad.

Good read, nevertheless. Another good Gulf War memoir is Baghdad Express by Joel Turnipseed. Actually, this one is better than Jarhead.

Chris Cooper - I'll hate it if he plays the sterotypical creepy guy.

Based on the previews for Jarhead it looks like they're trying to make the film about the first Gulf War a kind of allegory for the War in Iraq. Sort of like MASH wasn't really suppose to be about Korea it was suppose to be about Vietnam.

Anyway, it looks like it could be a good movie but if it's typical Anti-Americanism and an Anti-War film then I won't see it; I get enough of that **** for free without having to pay 7.50 for it.

I heard or read a review some time ago about the left's up and coming movies that are designed to undermine the war effort. "Jarhead" was on the list. I wish I had saved the review. Also on it was something starring George Clooney. It caught my attention at the time because a)the projections were for a year or so into the future, and b) the list had 5 or 6 productions on it as I remember-not a small number.

Scott D

is everything a conspiracy for you? It couldn't be because Hollywood isn't original, and can only make movies that reflect the upgrades in 'special effects' more than actually making a quality story into a quality story could it?

When Jamie Foxx looks so overly serious and so overly dramatic and says in a overacted serious voice, "Oorah" in the preview, that guarantees that I will never watch that film.

I bet anything that the move ends with an overly dramatic SAAAAAAAA-LOOOOOOOOOOOOOT! a la "A Few Good Men."

Good Night and Good Luck.

Speaking of which, there's a damn good documentary out on Edward R. Murrow...it's a four dvd set, with one of them focused on McCarthyism and Murrow's total exposure of McCarthy's fraud through his tv show, See It Now.

It was sure different than what I expected...it was good, but not great. Jamie Foxx did not **** up the movie...actually he was pretty spot on with his potrayal of a Marine SSgt. The movie as a whole was pretty accurate. My favorite quote from the movie is "STA platoon stands for SunTan Association"...that was dead on...STA is a bunch of sun tanners who are ALWAYS running and pt'ing with no shirts.

If you are interested in the military at all, this is a pretty decent movie.

It was a good movie I enjoyed it and there was a guy sitting next to us who apparently was a Desert Storm vet he kept saying how it was dead on.

Although honestly, I just enjoyed the sceen with Jake wearing nothing but two santa clause hats. But that is just me.

We went with several people and a few of them made the trip to Desert Storm...they echoed the same sentiments...it was dead on. I have heard many many stories about some of the crazy **** that happen while the guys played in the sand and waited for the war to start. My best friend actually learned how to make his own "hooch" with kool-aid, sugar and yeast.

from what I've heard from some of the Marines I knew who were there in the first Gulf War say it is really good and accurate.

There are a lot of motivated guys in the Marine Corps like the one portrayed by Foxx. You know the whole the few the proud thing.

Sooner in Tampa

The scene in the movie where he checks into his first duty station is WAY overblown. No Marine is going to walk into a squadbay and start unpacking...you going to be escorted by an NCO and introduced to folks...embellished for the movies, no doubt about it.

I liked the movie, up until the emotional climax: SPOILER AHEAD:

I know why they did it the way they did, but having the 24 President come in at the last moment, sit on his little stool and call in an air strike to prevent the Swofford character from taking a shot literally the second before he was ready sucked the life out of the movie for me. That scene was just way too Hollywood for me.

OK, I must admit that I have less than zero experience in this area. And I don't doubt that stuff like it happens. But would an Officer with a bum knee really go to the exact spot where a sniper has set up within the eye line of an enemy to call in an air strike? And then what are the odds that something would happen right as the spotter is on his final count?

Like I said, I don't doubt the spirit, but the execution seemed too pat.

o.k.

this DVD has been on top of my TV for about a month and i just got around to watching it last night.

i have NOT read the book, so i can't say how closely the movie follows swofford's account.

i would never characterize this movie as "spot on". about half of it was pretty accurate. it was the other half of complete BS that kind of ruined it for me.

it was hot. it was boring. we dug many holes. some **** went down. we went home. i don't know how you make a good movie out of that....but jarhead wasn't it.

usmc-sooner

I read the book and Swofford was a ****bird who blamed all his mistakes on the Marine Corps he was a pansy *** crybaby. He tries to pass it off as a true story but he prefaces the book by saying he doesn't remember so he has relied on other people's word about some of the things that happened. How the hell do you write your story then say your not sure about everything so you had to have other people fill you in. Bottom line is he knew it was a bogus story and he wanted an out when other Marines like me called BS on his sorry butt.
