Battle of the bands with violins.

I will say ELO. They annoyed me a little less when my mom would make me listen to them.

ELO is okay, but I'll take Kansas over them anyday.

Kansas songs were all pretty much downers.

ELO gave us Mr. Blue Sky. And Ma-Ma-Ma Bell. And Telephone Line (which is kind of a downer, but is still cool). And a great version of Roll Over Beethoven.

What exactly is more legit about Ks? Was it b/c their music wasn't as slickly produced? Were they more granola and, yet, more rock n roll? ELO pushed things more, and thus, were better, IMO. Ks just kept to the grass roots rock with a violin.

I was primarily considering their extensive use of the electric fiddle, their production values, time frame of their popularity, and lack of grooming.

how many Kansas members were subsequenlty in a band with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, and Roy Orbison? and had the same white guy nerf ball fro.

answer me that.

Rhino

its an 80's thing, you wouldnt understand By the 80s, they became more prog rock...but, in reality, was just crap.

The only three songs the general public knows ("Carry On Wayward Son" / "Point of Know Return" / "Dust In The Wind") came out in the 70s.

Showdown was a kick-butt song by ELO as well.
ELO all the way, bay-bee.

RUSH LIMBAUGH is my clone!
9/30/2005, 02:27 AM
Kansas had some really fine songs, but ELO kicks them hard with the power of just one song-"Fire On High", one of the greatest instrumentals of all time. It was the theme song of the NFL show on CBS, I believe, during the '70's, with Brent Musberger, Jimmy the Greek, and Phyllis George.

ELO, for sure, dude. Both are good, but ELO had a little bit more in the tank. Plus, Jeff Lynne's hair...I mean, nothing says "more cowbell, please" like Jeff Lynne's hair. ELO and Jeff Lynne's hair by a mile.

They both suck/ed. I wouldn't put either in my Top-100 list. And I've seen them both live, in their prime. Evil Woman is probably one of the worst songs I can think of. "Eee ee vil woman, da da da da da (crappy violin), eee ee vil woman, da da da da da (crappy violin) don't know what I'm gonna do....." Meh.

Fiddle bands? CDB. Tull.

In the 70's, if you were just listening to music, then ELO was better. But if you were stoned and listening, then Kansas was better. At least that was what I have been told.

ELO was the classic classical rock band! The earliest albums had great takes on a classical themes. In the end, they got a little too disco...

phead903
9/30/2005, 11:33 AM
You need to put ELP in there if you're talking about "Classical" classic rock - they set the standard for interpreting classicla music in an arena rock format.

Kansas, particularly when they had Steve Morse on the axe. For you guitar folks, it doesn't get much better than SM.
"In the Spirit of Things" is a cool program album (about a town that a storm destroys) KS did that everyone hated. I would encourage you to listen to it with the expectation that it is gospely.

Kansas is definately my preference - at least until they started doing their 1980's crap that sounded like everyone else.

I still hold a grudge against Jeff Lynne for making George Harrison's later works and the Traveling Wilbury's sound like ELO V2.
