They are talking about the tanker trucks because the gas stations on 45 are running out. Lines are a couple of miles long for gas.

My friend's son left at 6PM last night. In the middle of the night, the driver behind him fell asleep and hit his car. Not much damage at 10 mph. He isn't even a 1/4 of the way to Dallas as of now..

that will only be a problem if he cant stand to drink it warm. losing electric plays heck with cold beer.

Good luck to you jr, I hope you and your neighbors have supplies to get you through a few days. It is very helpful if neighbors will help watch out for each other during emergency times. I know I have a well and a generator capable of running it, and informed all my neighbors that we would not run out of water as long as we had gas for the generator.

For those of you considering staying, you might be surprised to find the roads clear out at the eleventh hour. That was what happened in NO. 8 hours before the storm hit, traffic was sparse and traveling the Interstate was a breeze. Guess it helps to be gassed up before hand though.

The worst of the traffic is now north and west of Houston. While there have been some problems, I think the overall view of the evacuation will be a success. We are talking of moving about 1 million people out of harm's way in less than 48 hours. This plan has been on paper for years, but this is the first time in action. It is true that many Houstonians not in an evacuation zone tried to leave, but gave up and are riding it out in there homes. My only suggestion is to have a few evacuation routes going west or southwest.
One of my employees went to Corpus this morning with no problems.

Good luck to you jr, I hope you and your neighbors have supplies to get you through a few days. It is very helpful if neighbors will help watch out for each other during emergency times. I know I have a well and a generator capable of running it, and informed all my neighbors that we would not run out of water as long as we had gas for the generator.I was one of the lucky ones - work for a logistics company, and our shipping people called ahead of time with the warnings that they were receiving. I was basically warned on Monday, and picked up about 20-24 gallons of water, batteries, and we have a good supply of "disaster" food in the house before the mad scramble started. My neighbor also has a generator.

The TV stations are already telling people not to go back until they are told it is safe. And they are telling them not to drive over downed power lines.

And don't expect to have access to gasoline. It looks like there is no gasoline within a 50-75 mile radius of Houston at this time.

They're thinking this storm will stall out over east Texas/west Louisiana, right? I heard that on the news last night and one guy said there could be up to 25 INCHES of rain in that area? Did I hear that right? I don't think there is anywhere in the US that could take that much rain and not severely flood.

I can tell you right now, that the biggest inconvenience for me is that the whole freaking town is abandoned. It's going to take a week before businesses start opening!

Who woulda thunk that I was stocking up on food not for the hurricane, but for the evacuation! Sure, better safe than sorry, but I can't believe how many people evacuated who are not in mandatory evacuation zones. I guess Katrina really has the Gulf Coast on edge.

BTW, I live in west Houston (near Westheimer and the Beltway) and it's beautiful blue skies this morning. A little breezy, though. ;)

Well we weren't planning on leaving until around noon yesterday and at that point, we decided that it would be a bad idea. It was a 100 degrees here and cars were moving a mile in 2 hours. Turns out we made the right call at least as far as leaving yesterday goes.

We have several neighbors in the hood that left and were back later because they burned up almost all their gas having gone only about 15 miles. I guess everyone had Katrina on their mind.

Roads are clear now, but based on the current track we're just going to stay here. Our car is still packed with about 3 days worth of food and stuff so if it gets really bad, we're going to a parking garage about .25 miles from here that is built like a WWII bunker. We'll just camp out.

There are kids riding their bikes up on I-10 as of about an hour ago.

That causes just as many problems in the long run as not being cautious enough.

Weather dudes are saying that the evacuation routes and the various stages of evacuations were adequate if only (mostly only) the folks under manditory evacuation were the ones leaving (those in the low lying areas).

Instead, with Katrina still on everyone's mind, most people in a city of 85 jillion people left at the same time. Which made it so that a lot of the people the highest possibility of not having houses may not make it out of town.

I'm not saying that this is right or wrong (people leaving like that), it's just what happened.

Heck, when I saw Cat 5 bearing down on freeport, I was out of here too... I just figured it's better to be fluid with your decisions and stay in as much control as you can (which isn't that much it turns out). However, I felt I had more control over the safety of my family by staying here than running out of gas up Conroe way.

It's thunderdome out on the highways right now.

mdklatt

Be overcautious. Who cares if people gripe about it. People will gripe regardless.

It's not the griping that's the problem, it's the ignoring. Why did so many people stay behind in N.O. (other than the fact that George Bush slashed their tires and siphoned gasoline from their cars to give to his Haliburton buddies)? I've seen many of interviews where people said, "Yeah, the government told us to leave, but they always say that and it's usually not that bad."

If half of all tornado warnings never led to a tornado would you pay attention to them? What if 75% of them wrong? You'd pay a lot of attention if it was May 4, 1999, but what about after that?

Haven't heard anything. That stuff doesn't happen until afterwards does it?

I can only imagine anyone looting on this street will have survived the storm only to die looking for a nice VCR. There's only 4 houses of about 20 on our street that don't have someone staying in them during the storm.

Until just recently, I think they had all the police directing the evacuation traffic.
