My favorite part is how it goes out every 10 minutes. It has taken me an hour to make about 10 posts. Which of course is the beauty behind it. it's quite ingenious. You see, if I call them they are going to tell me it's a problem with my equipment. Of course I have no way of proving without a doubt otherwise.

I guess you could say that I am an admirer or evil plans.

Exactly.

Bad signal is why I got rid of TV service. They don't seem to be able to fix it. Or probably they don't care.

I've been thinking of switching from dish and dsl to cox cable/internet/phone but after hearing this, I may need to ask around here a little more. If locals are having these problems I may not do it.

Keep in mind that I live in a 5 year old neighborhood and I've had problems with cox ever since I moved in. i'm sure if you luck out and live in a neighborhood with good service, you won't have a problem.

The best was the time I had like 6 cox service guys in my house trying to fix my signal. They left me with bad service AND muddy carpet. WOO HOO!

Mine goes down periodically. I quit calling them when it happens because they always tell me it's my equipment and it never is. It usually is only down for a few minutes, so it not that big of a deal. One night is was down all night and they wanted to send a guy out to "fix my equipment" he wouldn't be there for like 3 days, that kinda ****ed me off. It was working the next morning and they called me to cancel the appointment.

Dude! Don't do it. I'd probably give a body part or two to get my cable back. I'm locked in for a year with DSL. I have to reboot that freakin' modem at LEAST 5 times a day. Some days much more than that.

It is offishullay the succ.

We have a DSL at the office and it goes down about 6 - 8 times a month.

Our DSL is great!!! (since we ditched Norton) It never goes down and no modem problems. (the software is the suck though) We are also very close to the hub so it seems as fast as the T1 at work. Very cool.

I've told this story once before - I believe it was in a NIN thread with this same subject - I had the SAME problem and had to hassle the heck outta Cox, through 4 different 'technicians' until I got a guy who had a clue.

He tested every segment of line going from the junction box to my P.C., found a problem with the main run into the house. So he ran a new line from the little green box in the neighbor's backyard - then he had to adjust the impedance & signal with a little injector system .... from that moment on, everything was peachy (don't live in that house anymore).

Turned out the problem was: moles. Had a mole problem in the backyard (Moles - that's a whole nother thread) the little suckers were gnawing on the buried cable, which was only about 3 years old.

When they pulled the old cable up, it looked like a Chupacabra had gotten after it. Gotta give the guy credit - he called the mole issue. He said "This cable's so new, it shouldn't have this problem" and he asked "do you have moles or gophers?" I was like "Yeah i've tried everything from poison, to flooding 'em out with the hose, to camping out with a shovel . . ."

This guy was my personal hero for at LEAST a couple weeks.

That was the only time I've ever had trouble with Cox.

My experience with cable internet was in Albuquerque. I had much the same problems as Norm. Signal loss, poor connection, etc. So I had Comcast come out and check my signal strenght and eventually redo all of my cable connections. That seemed to fix any issues I was having and greatly improved the picture quality of the basic package that was included.

I'm seriously gonna switch to Cox Cable for internet within the next month or so. While my DSL connection is great, I don't think I'm getting near the speed I should be.

erm, my point was supposed to be this: haggle them, make stuff up if you have to. They tried giving me the same run-around. And keep in mind, that "first tier" of support you get on the phone is a joke. They have a flowchart they read from when trying to "diagnose" a problem. They have no clue, and most of their 2nd tier support doesn't either.

did anyone ever figure this out? In our new place, I wouldn't call it going out of service, but it kind of stutters. Our desktop, which is plugged in to our router, will be fine for a while, then will go through bouts where it'll take 15-30 seconds to load pages like google or soonerfans, which have never given me problems before.

I've never had problems with Cox cable, telephone, or innerweb. My parents have DirecTV, and the picture always freezes and stutters if there's any kind of wind. If it's raining hard enough the signal goes out altogether.

I also had to get Cox cable because the DirecTV guy said that he couldn't install it in our new home which is new construction. I then had to hurry to get HD Cable which seems to have about ten channels. Then I ask for two HD DVR's and the Cox CS rep told me that I could only have one HD DVR receiver unless I had there digital phone service too. Now I have three Cox services which scares the heck out of me.

I miss DirecTV already.

My customer service experience with Cox Cable has been pretty good. We lost an HD channel a couple of months ago and they ran the test and realized they had some issues on the lines surrounding the sub-division. They ended up having to replace two transformers. Ever since then, we've very few issues.

This is most likely the fault of the TV stations themselves and not the cable. The box itself gets it's clock synced with Cox's through the cable. Mine's right on and matches my computer (which is synced through the U.S. atomic clock) and my watch and clock radio, which also sync themselves every night through a radio signal out of Boulder.

TV stations often don't start or end their programs right on the exact time in the schedule. It can vary due to the length of any local programming or commercials. A couple of seconds here and there of local stuff being too long or too short will add up to a couple of minutes eventually.

My grandmother and aunt use Valor in Purcell and it goes out CONSTANTLY. Over the summer I spent about a week or so there and the internet was out most of the time with me calling them up every day trying to get something going. Finally, I asked to speak with the highest ranking guy they had and threatened to discontinue service and then I started yelling that I'd been given the run-around and told 50k different things none of which have put me any closer to restoring internet service.

That seemed to work, he sent a team of guys out there that very day.

I've had a problem with two cable boxes in my bedroom. The volume output is incredibly low. I often have to turn up the TV volume full blast to hear anything, but when I use another source like the DVD player, or Gamecube, the TV volume is fine. I think the problem is because of my table fan that sits 10 feet away, but blows in that direction. I think the electromagnet inside is causing some interference. The fan used to sit right next to my TV, but it started distorting one side of my TV screen.

Make up a story about something going wrong with the box. In Tulsa, unless I want them to come out to my house, I just had to go over there and take the old box, exchange it for the replacement, and go home and hook up the new one. Last year, they mandated that all boxes in Tulsa had to be replaced to a newer one. Cox would not come out and do it. The customers had to travel to their building to get the new boxes.

Point is, if you can get to their building and exchange the box yourself, make up a story about it then go over there.

It's not impossible, but it's pretty unlikely. Coax is shielded, and 10 feet away is pretty damned far away for a magnetic field to bust through shielding and effect the signal.

OUTromBoNado
4/9/2007, 11:51 PM
See, that's what I thought too. But, it's happened now with 2 boxes, both in my bedroom. The other two boxes in the house haven't had problem. One other box has a fan next to it, but it doesn't run continuously like mine.

I don't know. Maybe I'm overloading it watching all the soft core pr0n on skinemax.:pop:

Vaevictis
4/10/2007, 12:04 AM
Yeah, I bet the location isn't the only constant: I bet when you tested the two boxes, you tested them on the same TV, right? Maybe it's an interaction of some kind with that specific TV.

I get the same kind of issue in my living room: The cable box's volume output is much lower than the other devices. I doubt it's the location or any kind of EMF -- it's probably just that the amplitude on the box's output is lower. I bet it's the same with yours, it's just that the TVs elsewhere in the house are capable of amplifying it up further.

Can you not add time to the beginning and end? I know the DVR's that I have had (DirecTivo and Directv HR-20) that capability and i thought it was pretty much standard on all of them.

I really liked the Sprint Broadband Direct that I had when I was in OKC. I was disappointed that they didn't offer the service down here in Austin when I moved. I do have pretty good speeds and very few problems with the Time Warner Cable internet. I wouldn't pay them anything for cable, they have a full time Whorn OnDemand channel down here and no NFL Sunday Ticket or MLB Extra Innings.

I have had problems with Cox for forever... it always goes down at night when i am doing ****.

I say f'em. I make the damn technician come out every time. If it is working i dont care fix it again better.

I had the stutter problem... basically the guy came out to the appartment complex and had to remove about 10 splitters from the box. Then it started doing it again and it was the connector in the wall plug that needed replaced. If that gets worn out to were you can put something larger than the cable wire in it it needs replaced.

Cox sucks ***.
