i heard a rumor that they cut people who were good players in order to replace them with people who can march better. thanks guys, now that you can march better, the sound produced is not enough for the microphone, which is only 10 feet away, to pick up. thus leaving me unable to hear the band on T.V. I could hear the purple band much better. this game plan is about as effective as the teams last saturday. way to go guys, you have finally disappointed me completely.

My dad called from the game during halftime, and I was able to carry on an easily-heard conversation during the Pride's show. Blech. And this comes from a former Pride member, married to another former Pride member.

The 89-90 drum major was Russ Smith. He was also the DM for Phantom Regiment around that time.

They can play whatever they want at halftime. But I had better hear "Boomer Sooner," "Oklahoma" and "FanFare" loud, proud and often. As in continuous for more than 30 seconds. And having straight lines straight would be a plus.

i'd love it if the pride would stop playing the greatest hits no one has heard of and play something worthwhile. also - they should stop with the corps style looptie loos and asymmetrical designs that suck and stick with what the mainstream crowd wants. There was a weight requirement when I was in the guard ('91-'93). I was actually surprised they could get away with it, seeing how big some of the rest of the band members were. And it doesn't help that the new uniforms aren't very flattering. Bring back the short skirts! :D

Dr. Stephen Curtis, head of the choir department and interim head of the school of music. He is a really freaking good singer. You may not realize this, but there's a delay for the sound to get through the PA and from the speakers to the crowd, so he's actually singing about a half-second ahead of the 300-person band standing 5 yards behind him. "And on a Pride side note; I hate it that people give really good people, ie GREAT section leaders, crap because they have CLASS (isnt that why we go to college) that conflict with Pride. If people have a valid reason to not be at Pride one day a week because they are in a class that could not be schedualed else where GET OFF THEIR BACK. Honestly we come to school so that we can one day graduate and make money to support ourselves, we don't come to college just for Pride and parties."

What show did they play this week? You know, they could save a bunch of rehearsal time by playing video from the 99-01 seasons. we played the same stuff then as they are now it seems. that way soonervision could get more of a workout. The field would also appreciate it if the cattleguard wasnt running around putting divots in it. The band could just stay in the stands and workout all the rah rah tunes that they cant even seem to play correctly. Just a thought.

I particularly liked the rendition of St Elmo's Fire. Not once, but twice. It reminded me of the first time I heard them do it in '86ish.

Although, most of the people there I'm sure didn't even remember the song, so it was ok.

Ohio State's band allows only brass instruments - no flutes, clarinets, or saxophones - and all the instruments are provided by the school. I know that, at least in the trombone section, every person is issued two instruments - one for practice and one for gameday so they can keep the nice ones polished and in good repair.

And silver instruments look good and all but (again, at least in the trombone world) you won't catch a pro using a silver horn.

Marching Band Instrumentation

The Ohio State University Marching Band has changed several times over the years, from size to sound. It is nearly unrecognizable from its roots, a 12 piece all male ROTC band. With women allowed admittance in 1973, as well as various increases in size and changes in instrumentation, the band is as diverse as the entire university. Students of all ranks join the band and their majors range from Anthropology to Zoology. Surprisingly, Music Majors make up less than 20 percent of the band, and the most common major is engineering.

Every new candidate and returning veteran go through a rigorous tryout procedure including marching, playing, both together. Men and women are held to the same demanding physical standards, whether playing trumpet or sousaphone. These high standards are kept up throughout the season with weekly music checks, uniform inspections, and challenges.

Since 1976, the band's membership has held steady at 225 marching members. The band's instrumentation is unique among college bands, patterned after the traditional British military brass band. The 192-piece block band consists of the following instrumentation:

http://tbdbitl.osu.edu/?action=dl&fid=127

In addition, each of the 16 rows has two alternates with the exception of one additional alternate in one of the percussion rows (one alternate each on quads, cymbals, and bass drum) to bring the total to 33 alternates.

The alternates, though temporarily not marching, have important roles in the band. Because the band has no auxiliary units (flag corps, etc.), alternates (and student staffers) are used to handle props or other equipment to add an extra element to a show. Secondly, alternates have the ability to challenge regulars for a marching position each week. The challenge process consists of a shortened version of tryouts, where the squad leaders evaluate the challenger and challengee on music and marching. This process ensures that the 192 people are those that will put forth the most effort for that week's show and entertain the 105,000+ fans in the stadium.

Could be. And they're probably cheaper to buy in large quantities, too. The reason the Pride can't provide instruments like that is because they don't have fixed numbers in the sections. Ohio State's site said their band has been exactly the same size since 1975 or so. The Pride, though, will take anyone and everyone that shows up regardless of talent. (OK, almost anyone.) It's impractical to go buying a ton of new instruments every year when more people show up.

proud gonzo
9/11/2005, 05:30 PM
well, they USED to only take a set number and not take people who couldn't cut it, but that is no more.
They provide the sousaphones and melophones for everyone--and the sousaphones are nice now because some little old lady gave them lots of money for them.

They also got all new melophones (i think) this year. but they suck hard. if they're the ones i THINK they are (i tried out three possible models they were considering) they're balances poorly so they're a bitch to hold up and play (the center of balance is way out at the bell instead of where you hold the horn as it should be) and there are several notes SEVERELY out of tune.

Umm, not really. They can get one-time donors, but uniforms for a 300+ member band run into a few hundred thousand dollars, and instruments aren't cheap either. One decent trombone is about $1500.

Well, that's kind of what they do now, but upkeep of a musical instrument is a costly thing. Plus the capital needed to buy the whole trumpet and trombone section horns (they've got new baritones and mellophones already) would be roughly $125,000. Tuition won't quite cover it, especially when Pride is a 0 or 1 credit hour class. If half enroll for one credit hour and half enroll for 0, you get about $27,000. Not gonna cut it, espeically with costs needed for food (when travelling), transportation, lodging, etc.

Righ now they have brand-new sousaphones, baritones, mellophones, and drumline equipment. Trumpets, trombones, and all woodwinds are expected to have their own instruments already. There was talk a few years ago of maybe getting trombones for that section, since it's usually only about 32 people you might be able to negotiate a bulk rate to get instruments for about $800 apiece.

Actually, what I would do if I couldn't get enough funding together to get instruments to issue for the rest of the band is just to require the members' instruments to pass a monthly inspection - if it isn't in adequate condition, you don't march until it gets repaired.

The reason the pride is so weak and soft is because of the band staff. If you dont agree then im sorry, you have been brainwashed by either the music ed department or the band staff. The staff thinks that by playing more musically and more in tone that you play louder. Well that works with concert bands, but it surely doesnt work with a marching band. Football fans dont want this wonderful musically rich song. They want tear your face off, crass, nasty loud and the staff just doesn't get that. If you are tired of the Pride of Oklahoma Marching Concert Band, you need to email the director. That is the only way anything is going to get changed.

Actually, I even disagree with them on that, but that's another rant altogether. ;)

If you are tired of the Pride of Oklahoma Marching Concert Band, you need to email the director. That is the only way anything is going to get changed.

it has been done. it doesn't change anything. In fact, it seemed to get rather negative reactions.

they're too stubborn to change anything, and it would also be a blow to their egos to know that people dont like the crap that is the pride of oklahoma.

The staff thinks that by playing more musically and more in tone that you play louder. Well that works with concert bands, but it surely doesnt work with a marching band.

Actually the staff is right. The problem is getting everyone to play in tune. You have 300 people in a group and maybe, MAYBE, 25 who are talented enough to play in tune. Then there are a select few who play in tune sometimes. the rest just suck. The tuning issue works with any ensemble. I sat in a recording session with something like 15 string players, four brass players, two f horns, and four woodwinds. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard. It sounded like they had amplifiers. It was because they were in tune, and they are the best players in L.A. With a large ensemble such as the pride, it is near impossible to play that perfectly in tune. Especially if you are cutting people who can play so that people who march better are in the band. And from what has been said here, that isn't working.

hell, i remember getting yelled at for not playing loud enough a few times.

If they are going to continue this concert band bulls**t, than they need to be moved to either endzone so the WHOLE stadium can hear them... when the traveling band was in the north end zone this past game, I could hear them better than the whole pride in the student section.

I think some of you people need to come sit with the players' parents who sit directly right of the Pride (looking from the field). Me and the 4-5 people next to me play extremely loud. Every single time. (And especially when we play Boomer 3.) Just a suggestion.

This is so true.

The band is great, but it lacks the strength of sound and punch that it needs.

Why is this???? I don't believe that playing in tune is the problem.

I don't believe the band is large enough.

Look at Michigans band http://mmb.music.umich.edu/sections/

UM has a fantastic sounding band. In a stadium of over 100,000, it can be heard better than OUs band in a stadium of 80,000.

UM has nearly 322 people playing in their band as well. of that, nearly half are brass:

66 trumpets
34 horns
53 bones
15 euphoniums
26 tubas

I'm not sure of The Prides make-up, however it could stand to use much more brass in the trumpets, more horns and leave the lower end bones and tubas right where they are at. Just my take.

Heh. I was a bone section leader in 2001 and 2002, and I sat right next to the band at the TCU game. The change even in the three years I've been gone is pretty dramatic.

You guys are pathetic, how can you even call yourselves sooner fans. I've never known any organization to hate their band as much as you guys do. Its good to know that all of our hard work is showing in the way you guys hate us. And for you to say we suck musically is a joke. We have more members now than we ever have that marched DCI this past year, including me. Since most of you do not know what that is, it is the top organization of marching bands. We support our team every weekend which is a lot more than any of you do. This is a sad year in the history of OU fans, Thanks a lot guys, you are beyond pathetic

we're telling it like it is. many of us were in pride and many were in DCI as well. Did you hear the Pride before you joined or are you speaking from a very narrow awareness of what the Pride is and has been?

You do realize that probably half the people in this thread are former members and might just know what we're talking about, right? This thread is not about hating the Pride or its members. This thread happened because - just like last year - the Pride has so many dedicated fans that follow the band and notice its performance from year to year and they express concerns when they notice a change.

DCI is not an organization of marching bands, it's an organization of Drum and Bugle Corps. A subtle but important difference.

Oh, and to finish, I was in charge of the Pride's trombone section in '01 and '02 along with PrideTrombone and DFC and I'll guarantee you that the band this year and last year couldn't come close to keeping up with the band in 2000 and 2001, and those bands weren't even half as good as the bands back in '85-'88.

And now, IBTL.

Oh, please. My husband and I were in the Pride during the glorious Gibbs era ('90-'93). That includes 1990, thelast probation year with no bowl game. We were blamed for every loss in 1990. And truth be told, we were no where near as good as the bands of the late '80s. I can accept that. But what we knew was that we were there to support the team, and play Boomer 'til our ears bled. The Pride is not a concert band, it is not a drum corps; it is a college marching band.

Listen to GHP - he understands the difference between our worrying about the band (which we are) and hating' the band (which we don't).
The members don't choose the music or the marching routines, do they? They didn't when my roommate was in The Pride. We are concerned that your fearless leader doesn't get it. I've watched it for more years than most of you have lived and the spark that Coach gave the band just isn't there. We want it back. The fun. The swagger. The LOUD support of our team. Fun music rather than concert music - it is a football game, remember?
I've said it before - my favorite halftime was the Halloween one the year after Dupree left the team. It was funny, engaging, enjoyable. I still smile when I think about it. The band wore costumes and the marching included lots of major position changes that looked like a huge mistake. I wish that I had it on tape, it was that good.
Things change over time, not always for the best.

There was a student-run committee that chose the 2003 movie show: Back to the Future, Beetlejuice, and Batman. That committee is now overseen by the directors as well.

I've never marched in a band. I can only play CD's and DVD's.

But, my brother... that guy can play. He played clarinet and tenor sax, when he wasn't playing guitar or drums... or when he wasn't singing, but, truth be told, his singing wasn't all that sweet. Plus, he never convinced his friends to name their rock band Eric and the Ominoes, which was my ever-so-clever nomination for the band's name.

I used to go to games to see him march. From Tulsa Memorial HS to when he marched with the TU band (I wish I remembered the name of the guy from Memorial who went on to TU as the band director... Jonathan something, I think).

Anyway, I've watched a lot... A LOT of marching bands. I stay every half to watch the Pride, just as I used to watch the Charger band and the Sound of the Golden Hurricane.

And, I'm here to tell you, what I'm seeing now compares semi-favorably to Tulsa Memorial... except that Memorial got graded out as all 1's and I'm not sure the Pride would. 8 steps to 5 yards, and all straight lines, right?

The problem isn't the kids. It never is. It's the coaching and the directing. And the dude who is running the Pride into the bricks needs to be braided on a wheel.

PrideTuba
9/12/2005, 11:18 PM
Another major problem with the Pride is the drum major. If you ever actually pay attention to him (I never did because I cant stand him) you will notice he doesn't watch the game. He stands there talking to the people in band and waiting for the person in the pressbox to tell him when he can play. Since he doesnt watch the game he has absolutely no idea what is going on and he will sometimes try to play, "thats the way I like it" when a player is down. He is one of the worst drum majors I have ever seen in my entire life, that includes high school drum majors too. Ever notice when the running band is out and about during the 3rd quarter, our wonderful drum major starts playing something in the middle of one of their songs. Wonder why? Because he does not pay attention to anything!
