This is a clone of an Austrian STG-58 FN-FAL variant. It was imported to the country as a kit, minus the receiver. I bought a $400 machined 4140 steel receiver from a company in Illinois, plus added enough U.S. parts for legal reasons. It is a semi-auto - not a machine gun. I haven't shot it yet. I'm still waiting on the hammer, trigger, and sear. But this rifle was build in 1964 by Styre and it as the originial finish (except on the receiver). It is .308 calibre with 20 round detatchable double-stacked magazines.

The device on the end of the barrel is a flash hider/wire cutter/grenade launcher. These were legal to build even during the Clinton "Assualt Weapons" ban, but the flash hider could not be installed. The receiver is not cut for an auto sear, so it is impossible to turn this into a full-auto machine gun. plus, I really don't want to go to the pound-me-in-the-*** prison for 10 years.

These kits were only a $100 or so a few years ago when they came in by the crate full. The BATFE just stopped the importation of barrels and receivers, but everything else can still come in...plus there is a company that makes all of the parts here in the U.S. The kits are much more expensive. You can count on spending about $1200 to build one.

It does not have a bayonet lug. Major Stoll, who invented the flash hider, instructed the infantry to use it as a bayonet anyway by jabbing it into a persons' sternum. Ouch!

The wire cutter device is real neat. You put the wire in between the prongs, twist, and pull the trigger.

Of course, there are no available grenades, or the BATFE would rule it illegal. But.....there are dummy (inert) grenades available and this thing can shoot them 200 to 300 meters. It looks like a rocket, slides over the flash hider, the soldier inserts a blank cartridge (a loaded case without the lead bulled), closes the gas system and pulls the trigger.

I'm not really a gun nut. I am a FAL nut. This is the only one that I am so obsessed with.

Thanks. My dad is a deputy sherriff and he used to always come over and confiscate one to take with him on patrol. The last one he took, I didn't get back for 3 years.

Gun nuts you say?

I like these. A 15" Rodman Gun, photographed in one of the Federal forts that ringed Washington DC in 1863. :D

Well...I don't know if you're serious or not...but

A 12 guage shotgun would be much better.

With the high-powered rifle caliber & rapid fire ability, this weapon would be much better on the open battlefield; which I don't think I will see soon. It's total length is close to 4 feet long and it weighs about 3 times more than a standard U.S. military issue M16 rifle. Not good for close quarters. But! If you want something that will tear the sh*t out of cars, rip through 12" diameter trees, or shoot targets hiding behind a brick wall, then this is the gun for you! You're going to have some bad problems shooting this puppy inside a house. The noise will be deafening. The bullet will penetrate multiple walls and travel beyond the house into the the neighbors'

I think I will leave it unloaded and just use it for what I intended...something cool to look at, and add the bonus of owning something that many believe that I shouldn't "because you don't need one of them."

uh, jerk? I wasn't serious.

I agree with the 12 gauge (actually, a sawed-off). But, the problem with that weapon is the same thing as it's strong suit. Yeah, you don't have to aim much, and in the heat of the moment, that's a good thing. But sometimes, the ability to aim is nice.

The Princess, who is the best Hebrew reader in the house, wasn't able to make out the letters. If you've got a clearer pic, she can read it.

It might just say something like "insert other end." It's kinda funny sometimes the stuff ordnance people print or stamp on weaponry. My favorite is that stamping on a Claymore AP mine that says: "This Side Towards Enemy". :D

Read from right to left, as Hebrew is read, the letters are Tav and Tzaddi. The Princess was unaware of any particular meaning for these two letters as they're imprinted on the piece.

FWIW, there aren't too many prayers in Aramaic. I can only think of one, the Kaddish. It's an important prayer, though.

Holy **** Jerk. A waaaaay back in GW I (seems weird to say that), I had the pleasure of training a bunch of **** for brains Saudi Infantry. They were all equipped with the HK91 gun. Which is damn near the same gun as the FN-FAL (length, weight, cartridge). The thing was an absolute cannon compared to the M-16A2. Most of these pukes would be dragging the thing through the sand after only humping it a couple of miles.

At the rifle range we shot a few rounds through these things and thought they were excellent rifles though, probably better for medium range sniping rather than a front line infantry weapon. However, these ****ers couldn't hit the broad side of barn with it 100 yards away. Not to mention the majority loved to shoot it full-auto or as they would say in their only English, "Rock. And. Roll!"

If someone shot that gun on full-auto, I bet you could stand 20 yards away and the person wouldn't come close to hitting you.
