View Full Version : Anybody installed the M$ Vista Beta?

Veritas

I started putting together a box last night from some parts I had around to try it out, but am curious if any of my fellow SO nerds have worked w/ Vista yet.

And thank the lord they didn't call it Longhorn. I'd have been using XP until 2011 just to avoid it.

to beta test a microsoft OS no less. I'd think about giving you some pity spek if it was the newest linux kernel or something, but I wouldn't touch vista beta with a 10 foot pole.....at least, not on a machine with parts I had paid money for.

Well, but see, I've got enough parts sitting around to build a test machine. I built one to learn how to bootstrap Linux a while back but I figured I'd try out the new Windows and I'm not going to pollute a good box with what I know will be a hand grenade. I mean, I KNOW it's going to suck and all, but it's NEW and I'm drawn like a moth to the flame.

just make sure you keep any and all personally identifiable information far from that computers disks.....either that, or never connect it to the internet.

Oh, dude, it won't even be on my network. It's guaranteed to have more bugs than the monkey in Outbreak.

Just got my msdn shipment with teh Vista yesterday. I don't even know what - if anything - is cooler or better than XP. I'm such a bastard.

This is the workstation counterpart to Server 2003, right? Got tons of experience with that.

You know their initial releases are usually real bad, I may wait until beta 2 or 3.
What do you think about it Veritas? Worth the trouble?

Well, seeing as I just started building the box, and seeing as I'm really good at starting projects and really crappy at finishing them, the reality is that the box will be probably finished just in time for beta 3. :D

And every time I type "box" I giggle. Hehe. Box.

A scuzzy one that still has some Trojan residue.

every time I hear it referred to as Vista, I think Vista Cruiser, as in 'that 70's show'

its probably an appropriate metaphor for the bulk of microsofts work.

haha no, it's not a trap. I just didn't want to be posting the link all over the place and eating up all my bandwidth, so I put the file up on yousendit.com, It's the real deal. It even makes you verify you have a legit copy of windows before it lets you install it.

IE7 = IE6 with tabbed browsing. Welcome to 2001, Microsoft.

Oh, and since I know you're all so pumped about this, I actually finished building the new box (hehe) last night and installed XP.

I'm ready to be underwhelmed by Vista. Woohoo.

box, hard drive, trojan, soft, scuzzy, sexy...............
I like this thread.

Im thinking of upgrading from Win98 to WinME with older computer parts, but I figure by the time I get ready to install the OS, Microsoft will probably come out with something silly like MS2000 I hear.

Stick with Windows 3.1 . . . you can do so much more with less.

actually Win2k would probably give you less trouble that WinME

Microsoft Beta, that's a bit redundant.

Come on mom, Firefox.

Veritas - The box you're throwing together better have a nice video card so you can fully experience the Aero interface.

I have no problems installing beta versions of programs ... unless it has the word microsoft attached to it. Just think of all the security holes they've patched AND NOW THEY ARE STARTING OVER???

Now we find out why MS code-named the Vista product the way they did durnig dev.

The code name for Windows XP was Whistler, a Canadian ski resort. Blackcomb was also a ski resort, while Longhorn (Vista's code name) came from the Longhorn Saloon, which was about halfway between Whistler and Blackcomb.

they can apologize all they want....I still won't put anything on my computer that ever had the name longhorn.

no matter how long ago it was and no matter how innocent it may have been.

I spit on longhorn/vista.
