The Mars Volta kicks ***. I can't think of another band that's even remotely close to their style.

I got the cd and find the overall sound to be annoying more than anything.

I got the cd and find the overall sound to be annoying more than anything.Amen. There are a couple of songs on that disk that are freaking awesome. I mean, I like them more than almost anything that's been out in the past couple of years. But even the best of them descend into noise and sonic dissonance that I just don't get. This is coming from a Lips fan, for cryin' out loud. I just don't appreciate 8 minutes of crap slapped onto the end of a great song. Makes for an excruciating experience if you're someone who just likes to let a disk play rather than always be hitting the skip button.

TMV is known for putting minutes of ambient noise into their songs, and it's for a good reason. Frances The Mute tells the story of a man looking for his mother's murderers, and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez says he crafted this album like one would a movie. The ambience represents "scene changes." It's just something you have to get used to.

If you don't want to have to skip anything, get De-Loused in the Comatorium. There's a lot less ambient noise on that CD.
Take it to the Testing Folder.

Oh yeah, tenor saxophone on "Cassandra Geminni" = happy in the pants. It's quite possibly my favorite musical instrument.
