and i'm not talking about musical score soundtracks. cool songs that are played during movies only.

Almost Famous
Magnolia - Amiee Mann does an outstanding job
Good Will Hunting - can't stand the matt / ben combo on screen, but Elliott Smith is a hit
Garden State - great mello alternativish music collection.

i had to edit a typo before. on by and by, i thought Jesus and Mary Chain "just like honey" in Lost in Translation was kinda cool. that record "psychocandy" makes a brief visual appearance in High Fidelity as well--when Jack Black is lecturing the guy looking for Echo and the Bunnymen imports.

also, of some cinematic interest there's a shot in Lost in T where Sofia Coppola straight pays homage to Kurosawa's hard-boiled film noir/crime thriller "High and Low". i thought that was pretty cool....some 50-60 years later.

On the technical side, Farinelli is imperfect. Since no castratos exist today, reproducing the resonant, three-and-one-half octave voice presented difficulties. Director Gerard Corbiau overcame the obstacle by recording the voices of Derek Lee Ragin and Ewa Mallas Godlewska, then electronically combining them.

no nut kicking there ;)

the original faith no more lineup put out at least one LP (and maybe an EP) that explored a lot of that "sound". before Mike Patton replaced the dude who was the original singer--who got booted for drugs. Patton, needless to say, went on to do some really cool, wild sh*t with John Zorn and Mister Bungle.

the song "we care alot" being prolly the most well-known for the first FNM LP.

Depending on the mood that I am in the soundtrack to the Big Chill can be really relaxing.

Outside of that a few that havent been mentioned.

Romy and Michelles High School Reunion
10 things I hate about you (Good remake of I want You to Want Me, and several songs by the Donnas)
Grand Theft Auto Vice City

After much consideration, I have decided that the best soundtrack is Judgement Night. Whoever thought of pairing up rap groups with rock groups back in 1993 was a genius. Over 10 years old and this is still one of my favorite albums:

Great soundtracks always seem to come off mediocre movies.

Last Action Hero:
1) AC/DC - Big Gun
2) Alice in Chains - What the Hell Have I
3) Megadeth - Angry Again
4) Queensryche - Real World
5) Def Leppard - Two Steps Behind
6) Anthrax - Poison My Eyes
7) Aerosmith - Dream On
8) Alice in Chains - Little Bitter
9) Cypress Hill - **** the Hammer
10) Fishbone - Swim (Fishbone)
11) Tesla - Last Action Hero
12) Michael Kamen - Jack the Ripper

"Armageddon" had a great soundtrack too - two Aerosmith songs, Bob Seger...

i'm pretty sure Otis wrote it with Top Gun and Tom Cruise in mind. TC is kind of a Brando-esque figure. reflective. at odds with circumstance.

I should have waited and gotten the TG soundtrack later after they put all those extra tracks on it . I still have the original that ends with Faltermeyer's theme.

Another good soundtrack: Not Another Teen Movie. Basically covers of 80's songs done by current artists. Interesting (and in a lot of cases more rocking) renditions.

seriously though, when i hear that song i see that whole scene where he's describing his mom wanting to hear that song over and over

i guess it's kinda like Eric Cartman thing with "Come Sail Away" by Styx

"You've Lost That Loving Feeling" is much more obvious, and probably goes without mentioning :D

I'm going to have to go with the Royal Tenenbaums soundtrack, purely on the creep-out factor that the two songs bookending Richie's suicide attempt were by artists who themselves committed suicide.

Peter Gabriel's Passion the de facto soundtrack to Last Temptation of Christ is pretty nifty.
