Kansas basketball coach Bill Self will hold a news conference at noon today to discuss the J.R. Giddens situation, the KU media relations office said in a statement this morning.

Giddens was part of an altercation May 19 at a Lawrence bar that left him cut in the leg with a knife wound. The injury has kept him off the basketball court since.

Check back with Kansas.com later today for more.

Giddens to transfer from Kansas
Jayhawks' leading scorer recovering from injuries suffered in fight

LAWRENCE, Kan. - University of Kansas guard J.R. Giddens will leave the school’s basketball team another school, coach Bill Self said Friday.

Giddens, the Jayhawks’ leading returning scorer is recovering from a knife wound he suffered in a bar fight in Lawrence.

“We’ve talked numerous times about this and basically last night, we came to the conclusion together that it was in his best interests and our best interests to part ways and go in different directions,” Self said.

Giddens, 20, and five others were injured in the fight outside the Moon Bar May 19. An artery in Giddens’ right calf was cut and the wound required 30 stitches.

Police have received conflicting accounts from those involved and witnesses about what led to the altercation.

The 6-foot-5 Giddens would be a junior on what will be one of the youngest teams in the Big 12 next year. He averaged just more than 10 points last season and was criticized for his inconsistency and poor defense.

He'll be enrolled at Okla State before September.

Hhhmmmm, I bet Self layed down the law and put some harsh penalties on Giddens (which he should have), and JR decided it wasn't worth it...interesting.

If he transfers to a Big 12 school doesn't he have to sit out 2 years? Or is that in just some sports?

If he transfers to a Big 12 school doesn't he have to sit out 2 years? Yes. Luke Axtell.

Unless the coaches or AD's decide to waive the waiting period like they did with Junior Lucas and that guy that went to Texas.

But they won't do that in this situation.

He wont transfer in conference is the word from his pops. KU wouldnt sign a waiver for him either, this isnt the Baylor situation. Illinois and TCU were originally in his final list of schools..... Someone will be picking up an inconsistent headache for probably 1 year after he sits for 1.

We are going to have a flat out GOLDEN opportunity to get Sampson's first win in Lawrence this year. KU's definitely got some talent coming in this year, but this is one bull we need to take by the horns.

Wasn't this the kid form Oklahoma that everbody was upset at Sampson about because he didn't go to OU?

I thought that was Sheldon Williams - from Midwest City, wound up at Duke.

nevermind, Giddens is from OKC, too.

So if Giddens went to a Big 12 team, he would sit out a year, plus lose a year of eligibility? Is this only a basketball rule?

Lawrence Journal World has a story today about Giddens going to visit New Mexico and Tennessee. Other schools in his list are Miami, USC, TCU, UTEP, and ASU.

The story is fairly amusing, it talks about how Giddens wants to go to a town with "basketball passion" and a "big-time basketball atmosphere". I wonder if hes ever been to Lawrence????

A source close to the Lobo program has told ESPN that Giddens will transfer to New Mexico and sit out next year. They sold him on the idea of being the teams "go to scorer" and to try and replicate what Danny Granger did this year at UNM (first round draft pick and a tournament bid)
