Does anyone here fence as a sport?

If so is it expensive to get into, and are there any clubs in the Tulsa area?

From looking online, it looks like a good-quality starter kit would run about $300. http://www.leonpaul.com/acatalog/Foil_Starter_Kits.html

But you could probably find stuff a bit cheaper. I would expect at least $200 though, for a foil, glove, mask, and jacket. That leon paul site has a lot of info on there, too. And around Tulsa, I would contact these guys: http://tulsafencing.com/

Edit: For the starter kits, it's actually about $340, and their US site is probably better. http://www.leonpaulusa.com/fencing/acatalog/Foil_Starter_Kits.html

I have fenced competitively.

Short stumpy guys don't do so hot, so I wasn't real good. However, I knew the basics and such. Fortunately, my instructor didn't require me to own my own gear.

I've always wanted to do that. When I was in Memphis, U of M offered courses in that. You may want to check any local colleges and see if they have classes too.

Just join your local SCA chapter. They sword fight with harmeless wooden swords AND drink heavily while ogling fair wenches whose ample bosoms are practically spilling out over their corsets. :D

yeah, yeah i know

in Tulsa the reputation apparently merits the alternate name :D

seems more than ogling of the "fair wenches" was going on at their events...

Ahhh, a fond event of my childhood was when a woman did a "lady godiva" ride through the Medieval fair one year. I was around 13 or so. I followed her around trying to see if I could make out any dirty parts, but darn it, she'd done a good job of hair placement (and some guy put a robe on her before she dismounted).

So, CB's thread reminded me of this. I'm finally taking Fencing this upcoming semester. It's a club sport at Baylor and if I find that I'm any good at all (probably not) then I'd like to try my hand at actual competitions.

Heh. I actually know a guy that was a competitive fencer. He's currently in the Special Forces in Afghanistan.

If you wannabe fencers are serious, I've got over 3 miles of fence that needs some serious attention. It's too wet to harvest pecans right now, so I'll be working on fence this weekend. Who's in?

I've got lots of extra gloves. It's your arms that take a beating fencing.
