View Full Version : Best/Worst Song Remakes

Seeing the posts about the remade songs in the threads with the soundtracks in hell and the bands you eventually warmed up to made me think about what you consider to be the best and worst remade songs.
Here's a (partial) list I'll start out with:
Best remakes:
Muskrat Love — Captain and Tenille (America): Loved America's version but the muskrat "sounds" in the interlude of the C and T version gives it the slight edge.
Fly Like An Eagle — Seal (Steve Miller Band): Steve Miller Band's version is the bomb but Seal's version is very classy, even though it did appear on the "Space Jam" soundtrack.
Darling Be Home Soon and With A Little Help From My Friends - Joe Cocker (Lovin' Spoonful/Beatles): Joe Cocker was the Michael Bolton of his day, usually covering someone else's songs. But these two just stand out, especially the latter, which was so good it later became a well-known TV theme song.
Ooh Baby Baby and Hurt So Bad - Linda Ronstadt (Smokey Robinson/Little Anthony): Given a choice between the two, I would prefer Ronstadt's versions any day.
I Only Have Eyes For You - Art Garfunkel (can't think of the original artists off hand): Yeah, Art gets a bad rap, especially with his solo stuff, but I loved this version the best. Gives you goosebumps on a cool night.
Now for some of the worst remakes:
American Pie - Madonna (Don McLean): (see the soundtracks in hell thread).
I Love Rock and Roll - Britney Spears (Joan Jett): Britney also covered 'Satisfaction,' which was pretty bad, but Joan Jett's version is an ultimate rock anthem.
Without You - Mariah Carey (Nilsson): At least she didn't cover "Coconut" or "Everybody's Talkin'"
I Saw Him/Her Standing There - Tiffany (The Beatles): Rule number one for young pop sensations to follow. Never, never, never, never cover a Beatles song unless you have legitimate staying power. Is it any wonder Tiffany's career went downhill after this song?
Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay - Michael Bolton (Otis Redding): Bolton knows better than that.

I love Type O Negative's remake of Seals & Croft's Summer Breeze.

that is cool, i can't seem to remember what movie that was from

i still hate that Imagine cover by A Perfect Circle

Jolene by The White Stripes is pretty cool

Dancing Days and D'Yer Mak'Er by STP and Sheryl Crow were really good

Nirvana Unplugged in New York has some killer covers like Where Did You Sleep Last Night?, Plateau, Lake of Fire and The Man Who Sold the World

Good stuff
matthew sweet - magnet and steel.
buzzcocks - do you think I'm sexy

In addition to mfgg there's also a cover album by MxPx that's a lot of fun.

King Crimson
4/13/2005, 07:48 AM
worst:

U2: Helter Skelter
GNR: Knocking on Heaven's Door
Lenny Kravitz: American Woman.

in every case the original is so much better.

(Crue's vesion of HS on Shout at the Devil is way more cool than U2--and i hate hair metal)

King Crimson
4/13/2005, 07:50 AM
best:

mission of burma: the stooges: 1970
the who: eddie cochran's summertime blues.

Dolly Parton-"Stairway To Heaven" and "Shine"

I once heard Dwight Yoakum covering "Train in Vain" on that funky country XM station, it was pretty cool.

I think Ray Charles' version of America the Beautiful is awesome
Tim McGraw does a nice job with Tiny Dancer
The remake of Cat Stevens' Cats in the Cradle us pretty good too. I think Ugly Kid Joe re-did it, but I am not sure

Other than those, and some of the one mentioned above, I don't care for remakes.

"I'm Your Boogeyman" -- White Zombie (K.C. & The Sunshine Band original)
"Live and Let Die" -- GNR (Paul McCartney original)
"We Will Rock You" -- kind of an industrial remix, don't remember the band (Queen original)

Terrible:

I don't remember the song, but it was a Pearl Jam remake of some 60's song that Eddie Vedder could not pull off at ALL.

Best:

Supernaut cover by Ministry was killer. As was White Zombie's Children of the Grave. Jane's does a great cover of Ripple. Cowboy Junkies and Van Zandt's To Live is to Fly.

Worst: Ugly Kid Joe and N.I.B. and didn't like Motley Crue's cover of Smokin' in the Boys Room. Camper Van Beethoven's cover of Black Flag's Wasted pissed me off.

Best:

Red Hot Chili Peppers - their version of "Love Rollercoaster" blows away the original.

Talking Heads - Take Me To the River. Their live version is even better.

Yes - they do a FANTASTIC take on Simon and Garfunkel's "America"

Sarah McLaughlin does a great remake of two songs: Gordon Lightfoot's "Song for a Winter's Night" and Joni Mitchell's "Blue"

Power Station - Bang a Gong

Worst:

Kenny & Dolly - We've Got Tonight

Bee Gees & Peter Frampton - Sgt. Pepper's

Madonna - American Pie

Dixie Chicks - Landslide

Stories cover of "Brother Louie" by Hot Chocolate. Very slick tune.

"Brother Louie" was a controversial song about an interracial love affair. The title was written and sung by Errol Brown of the group Hot Chocolate and was a top 10 chart hit for the band in 1973, produced by Mickie Most.

The song was covered by an American band called Stories (featuring singer Ian Lloyd), about six months after Hot Chocolate's UK hit, and the Stories version made number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA.

Recently, the song has been covered by the North Korean electronic orchestra, the Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble, and by Bon Jovi.

Most people don't, which is one of the reasons I consider it such a great cover.

speaking of Otis, he also writes Respect which, again, covered in a way that many see it as the orig (Aretha Franklin).

and he also turns in a smoking cover of the Stones' "(I can't get no) Satisfaction.

everybody should own some kind of Otis Redding greatest or best of.

Hendrix covering Dylan.

"It overwhelmed me, really. He had such talent, he could find things inside a song and vigorously develop them. He found things that other people wouldn't think of finding in there. He probably improved upon it by the spaces he was using. I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day."...."I liked Jimi Hendrix's record of this and ever since he died I've been doing it that way... Strange how when I sing it, I always feel it's a tribute to him in some kind of way."

Also The Beatles version of Rock and Roll Music was better than Chuck Berry's.

even as a Beatles "homer", i don't know about that. they rock it though. also, Roll over Beethoven is a more than solid take on CB's original.

strong words.

you are some **** if you can humble Bob Dylan

not that i think he has an ego, but he's Bob Freaking Dylan

Indeed, and what a tribute to have Mr. Dylan change the way he plays one of his own songs because of how Jimi played it.

Speaking of Bob Dylan.

Who in the hell does Guns n Roses think they are doing Knocking on Heaven's Door!? Also, Live and Let Die just had to be redone as well? Yeah because Paul McCartney's version sucks  **** YOU GUNS N ROSES AND WRITE YOUR OWN DAMN SONGS!!!! Ok, I think I'm good now.

Another good cover that I just heard recently (dunno why I hadn't heard it earlier):
Ain't no Sunshine: Buddy Guy and Tracy Chapman

Actually, Buddy Guy does a whole crapload of covers that are awesome, mainly because the Blues is all about the covers.

A couple others that bear mentioning:

Lizz Wright: "Old man", and "Taste of Honey". That lady has one silky smooth voice

Also, "Sister Morphine" by the Rolling Stones (originally by Marianne Faithfull) has always been one of my favorites.

King Crimson

Violent Femmes: Children of the Revolution (T. Rex)

Bauhaus: Telegram Sam (T. Rex)

Alex Chilton: Slut (Todd Rundgren)

there's kind of a ****-strutting, OK thing about the Power Station cover of "Bang a Gong (Get it On)....but i'd put it, ultimately, in the iffy category. i don't think Rob Palmer has the brains to sing beautiful nonsense like "hupcap diamond star halo" or "beard full of eagles" and make it work. sneaking sally through the alley is an underrated white boy funk LP ill give Palmer, but Marc Bolan...is Mark Bolan. the Femmes and bauhaus do much better.

here's another one: Screaming Trees doing Jimi's 3rd Stone From the Sun on the first Sub Pop compilation. the wah stuff (reaching here, Gary Lee O'Connor, guitarist for the Trees) is great. it's sloppy but it works.

Husker Du did B sides of both the Byrds "eight miles high" and "Love is all around" (mary tyler moore theme) that were ripping noise nuggets for mid 80's snob types.

I should also add a few covers by the Brian Setzer Orchestra.

Namely "For Lisa", a cover/adaptation of "Fur Elise" and "Take the Fifth", a cover/adaptation of Beethovens 5th.

It had to kind of suck when Johnny Cash redid your song, because he pretty much owned it after that.
That was pretty much the exact same words that Trent Reznor used when talking about Cash redoing Hurt.

I prefer the SRV - Voodoo Chile version better the the Hendrix version of Voodoo Child.

I think that's a really tough call, because I think versions done by both guitarists are very much awesome. Now, I think there are better versions of Hendrix's "Angel" than the one he made.

I dunno, tell me which is better.

Bad: Michael Andrews & Gary Jules' strip-down of "Mad World" by Tears for Fears. Not bad on its own merits, somewhat good in fact, but bad because of its commercial ubiquity, especially that borderline-offensive use of it in the Integris mental health commercial.

Tip for any of you in advertising, any commercial about mental health care or medication where the people aren't giving you the thousand-yard stare with slow piano music on the soundtrack would be a good start. It's not always like that. And we don't want to be reminded that it often is. :)

Ok it's time for me to step on some toes.

Is it just me or do re-makes of popular songs by Christian bands with a "twist" just royally suck?

Hotel California? Lets change it!

Welcome to the hotel of Bethlehem!
Such a lovely place, such a lovely face!
There's not plenty of room at the hotel Bethlehem!
Any time of year...except on Christmas...

I mean it's like, come on dude! At least try a little. Sure, the Eagles and Led Zeppelin could of had satanic message but you know what? They sound badass!

Dave Matthews Band has been coving the Stones (Bitch), Pink Floyd (Money), and Peter Gabriel (Sledgehammer) this summer.

I love their Money; crowds seem to enjoy Sledgehammer quite a bit. Their Bitch is OK.

I am just not much of a Hendrix fan, I can appreciate his craft and place in music lore, but just not much of a fan. Much like Dylan to me, an incredible songwriter but I can't stand his singing.

I also like the HSAS version of Whiter Shade of Pale better than the Procol Harum (or other) versions.

bad: can't think of the band, but its some neanderthal looking dudes covering a genesis song.

haven't listened to it, but im sure avril lavigne's cover of imagine is what hell is like in auditory form.

'Land of Confusion' by Disturbed.

The current remake(s) which comes to mind is that most awful Kid Rock song which remakes Warren Zevon's Werewolves of London and Lynyard Skynyard's Sweet Home Alabama in one song. Terrible stuff by a talentless individual.

Other bad remakes: Elton John's Daniel remade by Wilson Phillips; any and all of Kenny G's raping of Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, and other jazz classics; Rod Stewart ripping off all those Motown classics.

Good remakes: The Byrds redoing Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man; Procol Harum's Whiter Shade of Pale which redid Johan Sebastian Bach.

If I'm not mistaken, the Wilson Phillips version of Daniel was part of the album Two Rooms, in which other artists covered the hits of Elton John and Bernie Taupin. I wouldn't necessarily call it a remake if you're doing it for an album to honor a singer/songwriter, but yeah, still that song wasn't very good.

And I agree with you on that Kid Rock song. Absolute craptastic fail.
