I nominate Cardinal Law. He'll help bring on a "hands on" policy for the priesthood.

Pope John Paul II is the one who suggested most of the Popes on the big list of over 100 candidates. I just hope that our next Pope will change the churches position on the use of birth control.

If it's someone from a developing nation (like the guy from Nigeria) I'd almost bet on it. Especially since they have an AIDS epidemic to worry about over there.

most of the cardinals i saw on the "shortlist" are all in their 70's......might be a short reign

And from what I've read, it probably won't be anyone on that the media is talking about. The Catholics know that high-profile people that want the job probably shouldn't have it. ;)

I'd bet against it.

I see Pope John Paul III as being fairly status quo.

Arinze is as conservative on those matters as JP II was.

Yeah, apparently the Nigerian dude is pretty close to Ratzinger on those things.

Just keep your money away from Cliffie Claven though.

He's got some pretty powerful opponents among the Italian, Portuguese, and Latin American cardinals.

Sheesh, look at these papal names....Linus, Cletus, Sixtus.

Thank God there aren't any significant cardinals from Arkansas on the watch list. You know they're begging for a Pope Cletus II.

Pope Sixtus would be pretty cool though.

Actually, didn't Cardinal Mahoney and Frank Keating get into an argument about his (Keating's) Commitee's investigation into the sexual abuse scandals?

I seem to remember people blaming Mahoney for getting Keating off that committee.

I'd prefer Cardinal McCarrick, but he's too old (75)

Can you imagine an American becoming pope?

It obviously won't happen, but the thought of an American taking the throne of anything is sorta weird.

I'd expect it to be a distinct possibility within the next 100 years.

Won't happen, unless America ceases to be a super power.

I don't think such things could be flipped on and off like a switch. The reasons against it given for the last 2,000 years don't disappear because of a whim... In addition to JP2's Theology of the Body and the Gospel of Life will probably be the framework for catholic moral theology for the next 100 years.

I remember that he was involved... the dispute over the very hard line "zero tolerance" reached a head in non-abuse situations that Mahoney was worried about.

Those two guys are about as different as any I could imagine, I think.
