How did I miss this thread?

Mr. BSG is already giddy. He's buying stuff, watching the freakin' Outdoor Channel - you name it.

I accept this behavior as his version of 'shoes' - I do not question what I do not understand.

I love to turkey hunt! Probably my favorite thing to hunt. I've gone to MO the last two springs but probably not this year. I have invites to KS, TX, MO and AR but probably won't be able to go anywhere to far from home this year. I can't wait to get after them though!!!

What kind of a call do you use, box, slate, mouth or combination? I love my box call, called in alot of nice Tom's (29 lb Tom with an 11 inch beard in 2000)with it.

I am eating wild turkey (been marinating for 2 days now) for dinner tomorrow night. He's one I took last year. I counted 11 (one nice tom, a couple jakes, and a bunch of hens) but there were more in the brush right behind one of my ponds last week. They've been shock gobbling when the roosters crow out back.

Of course I didn't see/hear a single turkey all through deer season. Last year, I counted over 100 in my pasture during deer season. Kinda weird how they're moving around.

Anyhow, asking me if I'm going turkey hunting is like asking if a pig's that which shall not be named is pork.

Dean sounds like your'e gonna have a nice dinner. Wild Turkey (the meat) is great table fare if prepared right. I'm going after Rio's out by Cheyenne on the 6th, Then a week later we'll be chasing Eastern's down by Daisy.

Sounds like you just have to walk to the back pasture........Good Luck!

I've got em all in my vest. I use the mouth call mostly and a slate would normally be my second choice. I use a box call mostly to locate but have called in birds with it.

It wasn't pre-meditated, but yes. Sat in my deer stand all day back in '01 down in S. Texas and didn't see a buck all morning. Was heading back to the 4 wheeler when I noticed a group of 20 or so Rios. Got behind a big cactus bush and waited for the right shot. Sighted in the biggest Tom I could find through my scope and took out his adams apple with a .308 Winchester.

My very first turkey. It was in the fall in TX. Shot it in the head at 100 yards(I was aiming for the body :D )

I like to hunt them with my bow too. I've killed 7 with my bow so far.

I'm having a custom bow made for just such an adventure...

I can qualify for a Crossbow but I just never felt like going throught the trouble of the legalities.

The new bow will allow me to hunt again in bow seasons...

I too, almost took a tom during deer season with my 30-.06...

It was late in the day and I had just seen movement of deer so i refrained.

Not with the first 4. One of the last three was in the fall from a tree stand(thats harder than from the ground, those dudes definitely look up!) The other two were from a double bull blind.
I will probably use the blind from now on(when I want to bowhunt them) just because its so much more comfortable.

Not a hunter...What's a Rio?
There are different subspecies of Turkey.
The Rio is one: Located in OKlahoma, TX, KS, and a few other states.
The Eastern: Located in eastern OK, and pretty much in all states east of there
The Osceola: Located in southern Florida
The Mirriams: Located in mountain states mostly
Then there is the Goulds; Mostly in Mexico but Arizona is trying to reestablish a population
and the Oscelated: Yucatan Peninsula, looks like a turkey bred a peacock.

Norman Man Attacked By Turkeys

OKLAHOMA CITY -- A Norman man said he wasn't hunting turkeys at Lake Stanley Draper, but rather the other way around.

Will Millington, 46, said he was riding a dirt bike near the lake last weekend when he was attacked by two big toms.

Millington said he was riding through the woods when he stopped to keep from hitting the toms and a group of hens crossing the trail. The hens scattered but the two toms stayed and fought.

He said the turkeys began gobbling wildly, flaring their fans and then jumped up and slammed their bodies into him. Millington gunned the bike and the turkeys gave chase.

He escaped without injury, but said he was dumbfounded by the encounter.

Spring turkey season opens Wednesday across the state.
