I think I'll have some wedding money to spend here in a couple of months. Been thinking about getting a charcoal grill, something that's heavy duty, but not a smoker. I looked at Kingfisher Kookers, but they look kind of weak. Any suggestions? I'd like to stay under $1,000, and would like to buy a locally made brand, but it wouldn't be a deal breaker if it wasn't.

Do you only want charcoal or is gas ok? Seems like I'm always mentioning Sams Club but they do have some good stuff. I have this sweet baby for $599 and love it to death.

or the weber ranch kettle. Seems pretty pricy for a kettle at $999.

Andy, you should just build one out of brick & mortar. Just grab some crap from the site and make it as fancy as you want to for free, with a little elbow grease.

Ditto. Wifester and I have almost the same one, just no side burner and it was @ $300. It is AWESOME.

There are a ton of people that make them and sell them on the side. Look around at the local metal and welding shops. They are almost always local people that you can get in touch with if you have a problem.

Good call. My step-brother-in-law made a charcoal grill from stainless steel stuff. It's sweet.

Dude, go for the Egg. You'll be getting a killer smoker as a bonus. (if you're wanting the charcoal, of course)

If you want gas, the one at Sam's has very good reviews. Seems like they talk about it on the Virtual Weber Bullet.

I think my brother and I are going to build a big boy trailer mounted smoker this summer. Gonna use an old propane tank for the main body. And, I'll still probably use the little one all the time.

If it doesn't smoke, it succs.

How hard is it to convert those from propane to natural gas?

Change a jet out for each burner. Natural gas uses larger jets.

The green Egg is the way to go. The steaks on that thing RMFO!

By "jet" are you referring to drilling out the orafices?

And the bad boy that Alton Brown uses:
http://www.bbqgalore.com/store/item.bbq?invky=5824202
this is the one I'm thinking about getting due to sheer cooking size and versatility. Although, the egg does have the "neat" factor.

Alton Brown is the best for recipies.

Although I'm not sure of his technique of cooking steak literally on top of the charcoal, in contact with that stuff. Just my opinion though.

You must resist this grill...it's called "texass" or some such shiite.

Go with the Egg, you will not be disappointed. Cooked steaks for the whole fam last night. 6 big steaks, 24 minutes from lighting the charcoal to sitting down to eat perfectly cooked steaks -- even did the mesquite chip thing which smokes as you cook.

how big is the cooking grate on the grill? That's one of the things about the grill from bbqgalore. It has a huge cooking surface, but it also has charcoal trays in the bottom so that you can cook over just 1/4 of the grill if you're not cooking for a huge group.

And how much was your BGE? They ask their webretailers not to list the price.

$600 - $800 depending on accessories and size. Worth every penny since its the last one you'll ever have to buy.

You must return either your penis or testicles at the next Men's Club meeting if you get this one.

whatever, that thing is the ****. Plus, I can let Stacy pick out the color and they're having a huge sale.

The downside is that the version with a 15" grate weighs close to 400 lbs. Not really a problem for me, but if anyone else had to move it they might be hurting the next day.

Nobody should EVER use propane to cook meat. Charcoal is the only way to go. However, it's nice to have a dual charcoal/gas grill so you can cook side items such as vegetables on the gas while you give the meat the charcoal treatment.

gas isn't too bad in a pinch. it's nice that you can turn it off and walk away from it, especially if you live in an apartment. And, if you let some fat build up on the grill, it can almost taste like a real grill.

Really? I bet you couldn't tell. Especially in a propane smoker. You just use wood chips and it gets as much wood flavor as you want.

Hey, Dean....how good was that pulled pork cooked on that propane smoker?

Sorry Hank, Dean's splitting wood the rest of the week and weekend. Probably won't be back to answer until Monday.

Yep. Mmmmhmmm.

They have a pretty good one with a steel grill and an optional smoker for $119 at Lowes. It has 800 sq in cooking space, some shelves, a temperature gauge, an adjustable charcoal rack - just about anything you need. I do just fine with my $70 Webber kettle, except that it isn't big enough. I don't know why I would need anything more expensive than $119. Or do you guys frequently cook for more than 10?

Maybe you are all elitist grill snobs? That's pretty pathetic.

Just ordered the Weber Genesis Gold C. When you don't get home until 6:30 or later, ain't got time to charcoal.
