View Full Version : Website Hosting suggestions

I'm about to kill the people at your-site.com. E-mail has been down for 36 hours now and I'm livid with them.

Now, gimme suggestions for on the cheap, RELIABLE website hosting companies.

Right now I pay $60/year. I get 50MB of disk space, 6gigs of monthly transfer, 25pop3 accounts and unlimited aliases. I can go up or down on the price and the requirements, they're just really the only things I'm concerned about. Everything else is additional to me at this point.

Please and thank you.

Someone help Rhino.

I needs my oklahomarock.com, dammit.

Try Infinology...been using them for about 3 years. They do go down on occasion, as all the cheapies do, but never for more than a few hours and e-mail isn't effected.

250 MB of space, 6 GB traffic, unlimited e-mail accounts (choice of mailbox or alias).

Sheesh, didn't you watch the Super Bowl? GoDaddy.com (http://www.godaddy.com)

don't know if godaddy has servers available.

BigRedJed

I don't think they do. I've registered some domains through them, and they didn't have hosting at that time, anyway.

I really, really like www.catalog.com (http://www.catalog.com), FWIW.

BigRedJed

BTW, having used catalog.com for a couple dozen sites since 1999, I have never had an uptime issue. That of course doesn't mean it hasn't happened, just that it's never caused a problem, or happened at a time that I was aware of it. The mail server has had some on-again-off-again issues in the past (not in the last two years, that I remember), but the virtual host for the sites themselves are extremely reliable.

Try Verio or Frontserve . . . I've registerd a domain with verio and had it hosted by Frontserve before.

I was pretty pleased overall.

neither do i.

when i was in tennessee working with my brother, i offered to do some things for his business that he doesn't have the time/talent for (set up his books on quickbooks, designed a logo & had some biz cards and company t-shirts printed, etc).

there were several people that wanted to see examples of his work. he has basically been loaning out a photo album to prospective customers - which isn't available if someone has it, and he's the one running it out to their house.

so i bought a domain name for him on godaddy.com that has free hosting.

all i want to do is set up a page w/ his contact info, e-mail link, and clickable thumbnails of his work. problem is, i can be retarted at times when trying something new.

can one of you web site building knowing about type people help a brother out? i just have a few simple questions. (like, WTF is an FTP - and do i have an FTP button on my keyboard that will do all the work for me) i would ask Vertistas, but he won't call me anymore.

FTP = File Transfer Protocol. An FTP utility is what you use to upload your files onto the server. There's a free Firefox plug-in that adds FTP capability to Firefox (called FireFTP, for the other geeks around). Or you can usually find either free or really cheap programs (WS-FTP comes to mind, www.ipswitch.com (http://www.ipswitch.com) - it has a free 30-day trial).

But that only helps you if you've already built the webpage (the HTML coding yermom asked about) using some other program.

hostgator and powweb are both decent as far as cheap hosting goes. you're never going to get prime reliability out of a shared hosting environement (which is what all the cheap plans are). you'd have to move to a dedicated server, but unless your site is making you some money, that's generally cost-prohibitive.

or you could stuff the crappiest box you can find that runs Linux under your desk, use a dynamic DNS host and run it off cable ;)

Heh, that's what I get for skipping the first page of the thread.

1) FTP. Download SmartFTP (http://www.download.com/SmartFTP/3000-2160-10028635.html?part=dl-SmartFTP&subj=dl&tag=button).

2) I'll give you a link to download a copy of Dreamweaver MX, one of the better HTML editors. DW actually has FTP built it, so it kinda negates step 2.

Dreamweaver is great . . . I use that or Macromedia Homesite.

There's also a free Dreamweaver-like program called Nvu (http://www.nvu.com/) that is pretty good too.

We use www.dotnetpark.com. Dunno if they are competitive for a "static" site, we only looked at those that host ASP.NET sites.

I'm looking for a new host too. I think what you do is register your domain separately, pay monthly (no long term contract), and don't give them your credit card number. Then it's easier to punt them whenever you're dissatisfied. I'd also ask for telephone support, and a unique ip address. You can use http://www.findmyhosting.com (use the advanced search) to find plans that have the features you want. Also read some of http://www.webhostingtalk.com.

Use code 777
777 is an old deal and apparently still works and it's only good for new customer so you need create new account.
Pick the Crazy Domain package
It makes it $9.99 for the first year
