I've passed all three types before. Be sure and drink some cranberry juice. Its gonna cut on the way out and it helps with infection. The big one was the size of a pea. If it makes it any better, when it actually came out, I didnt feel it. Be careful though, because the ensuing stream is awesome.

They say that Kidney stones are more painful than childbirth, or being stabbed with a knife, or even a gunshot wound.

Good news is, you will most likely not die from a kidney stone. You will only wish you could.

I did this. You get a kidney stone that is so big it gets stuck on the way out, so they have to run a tool through yours to blast it with a laser. Then they say the operation was a success, and by the way you still get to pass the pieces that are left. yup... It was actually a blessing for me because while they were poking around in there, they noticed a growth and removed it. A biopsy revealed it was in the very earliest stage of carcinoma. Lucky me, huh? But now, they want me to come in every 6 months so they can run the scope up there again to see if it comes back. While I'm awake. After the first couple of times, I'm thinking every 2 years might be better.

BigRedJed
1/24/2005, 10:12 AM
Well, here's an update. My surgery was apparently quite successful. The pain related to my UT (heh) is quite mild. I still get a little kidney-area pain when I pee, but that's just due to the inflamation in my ureter (the tube leading from the kidney to the bladder, where the stone was). That lessens every hour.

I am no longer peeing blood, however I have been on a UT pain medication called pyridium, which makes you pee the color of orange-flavored Gatorade. Weird. I've stopped taking that, so that should be back to normal soon.

I had a tough weekend, running a fever, experiencing lots of intestinal distress, and haven't eaten a full meal in close to a week now.

Today, however, seems to be a new day. I feel really good, at least by recent standards. I'm even plannning on going into the office for a bit today to try and catch up, at least a little bit. I had no idea how bad this thing was going to kick my ***. I do not, I repeat, DO NOT recommend kidney stones.

Did I mention that by the time my surgery came around, they had given up on Demerol and were giving me injections of Dilaudid, which apparently is typically given to end-stage, terminal cancer patients who are experiencing blinding pain? They were having to give me 100 mg of Demerol once an hour or so, and that still wasn't getting it.

So, as far as I can remember, here's the list of painkillers I enjoyed during this experience:

Vicodin (oral)
Percocet (oral)
Demerol (IV)
Dilaudid (IV)
Whatever they put me under with before surgery
Pyridium Plus
Ditropan XL (actually this is an anti-spasmodic)
More Vicodin

No wonder my gut was asleep for days! On top of these I got several antibiotics via IV, and now I'm on Cipro. I think most of the intestinal problems and the weekend misery were related to all of the painkillers, which I am now fully off of. The only thing I'm now taking is Cipro to head off infection (nothing like paying more than $10 a pill, with a prescription plan, BTW - I know, there are much more expensive drugs, I'm just not used to paying for them).

So, long story short, I'm finally feeling MUCH better. Thanks for all of the kind wishes, for the betting pool, and for the pictures of what my stone MIGHT look like. I still don't know what type of stone it was, BTW. I'll ask my urologist when I talk to him this week.

Update: well, after calling my doc's office, I found out that they DID after all leave a stent in my ureter. I don't think I detailed this in previous posts (which is hard to imagine, frankly). When he consulted prior to the surgery, he said he would probably need to do so, but the nurse in the recovery room said they had not done so, giving me a false sense of confidence. Since I left the hospital after the surgery without an overnight stay, I had yet to speak with a doctor. I thought that I was done with this entire sordid episode.

Ah, not so fast, my friends! Turns out the recovery room nurse was smoking crack, or just trying to make me feel better. There IS in fact a stent, which has to be removed within the next couple of weeks. And how might they do so, you might ask? Well, through my dickhole, of course!! Duh!!

So at some point about a week and a half from now, I get to have an office procedure (somehow this is supposed to make me feel better), where they numb me up a little, send some roto-rooter device up the length of my manhood, grab hold of this little wire mesh stent, and DRAG IT BACK OUT!!

Could someone please pass the Dilaudid?

usually when they leave a stint in it has a long string attached and they just slip it out. if the stint is in the uretur, then they have to go in to the urethra past your prostate then up into your bladder and then grab it in the uretur. they should knock you out. tell them you want 100mg demeral IV injection. with some versed. they may knock you out anyway. I have gone thru this alot of times

You will probably get Versed for the procedure - you'll be awake, but won't remember it later. Get a designated driver.

Pyridium is also for spasms, though it does help pain from the spasms.

And we don't use dilaudad for Oncology patients - they get morphine. MS Contin, which is a time release pill, and liquid morphine for break through pain. Chronic pain is very different from the acute pain you experienced.

As for the 100 mg Demerol IV dose, no way is that going to knock me out. I was going through those like candy in the hospital. Even the Dilaudid didn't render me unconscious. He did offer to put me under if I'm really freaked, though. I might take him up on it.

Giant' 17-pound baby born in Brazil
Diabetic mother delivered by Caesarean

Updated: 7:20 p.m. ET Jan. 24, 2005

A woman in Brazil gave birth Wednesday to a boy that doctors have nicknamed "giant baby." The infant weighs 17 pounds, about the average size of a six-month-old. He was delivered by Caesarean section.

The boy's 38-year-old mother is diabetic, a condition which can commonly cause women to give birth to larger babies. The boy, named Ademilton dos Santos, is receiving oxygen due to breathing problems and is being given an intravenous glucose solution to maintain a safe blood sugar level.

The director of the hospital in Cajazeiras, an area in north eastern Brazil, said the boy is otherwise in good health. Doctors say the mother Francisca Ramos dos Santos is feeling well after her surgery.

The boy's father and four sibilings were reportedly surprised at the news.

He is the heaviest baby ever born in Brazil, according to Brazilian medical officials.

Seriously, though, kidney stones are a real eye-opening experience. I haven't had any in a while, now, so the memory of the pain is sorta starting to wear off. Y'know -- where intellectually I remember, "Yeah, that was the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. Writhe, cry, spin around over and over again, absolutely desperate that it go away sorta pain." But, really, it's just a factoid stored in the brain. Isn't like that year or so after you get one, where every time you feel a twinge anywhere remotely close to your kidneys, you sorta hold your breath, feel your skin go cold, and ask yourself, "Oh, God, don't let it be another fargin' stone. Seriously, dude. I promise I'll be good. Let it be cancer or something. Just not a frickin' stone."

Never had to have anything stuck up my Willie to liberate a stone -- so I now officially count myself lucky.

Update: I had my stent out this morning. When they stuck the scope up my pee hole I screamed out loud like a hot poker had been stuck in my eye socket. It still didn't get a sniff of the actual stone pain. I was asked after the stent removal how painful it was compared to the kidney stones. If the stones were a 10, the stent removal was a 3. However, the stent removal was still about as bad as any other short burst of pain I've ever had. If I had my choice between the stent removal and being hit on the thumb with a hammer, I choose thumb.

Slightly less traumatic than the scope, but still bad, was the actual administration of the Lidocaine prior to the scope. The doctor's assistant shoved the tip of a huge syringe you know where, and started blasting Lidocaine. It was freezing cold and burned terribly at the same time. Plus, it was fluid going the wrong way. Not fun.

I'm not on any painkillers, and the doc said I'd be fine in a couple of hours, but the Lidocaine is wearing off right now, and I'm not completely comfortable. To add insult to injury, they gave me a pill that's supposed to make me pee purple for a day or so. ROCK!!

I go back in a week or two, when he'll have the results of the stone analysis and will counsel me on diet changes, etc. I asked if he remembered what kind of stone it was, and as I suspected, he didn't, since he prolly removes dozens of these each week. He did however say he would have a picture of the stone at that next appointment. If I can get a copy I'll post it, so youze guys can settle your betting pool.

Well, I had my doctor's appointment this morning, and saw the stone analysis. Unfortunately, the lab didn't supply a picture. The doc said the lab they normally use always supplies one, but my insurance apparently requested they use the ghetto, no-picture-supplying lab. The doctor's office is following up with the lab, but there might not be one available.

I can, however, tell you that the stone was 80% calcium oxalate monohydrate, and 20% calcium oxalate dihydrate. He said the stones are about as hard as diamonds, and very difficult to treat. However, he did say the small stones I have "on deck" shouldn't be a problem if I incorporate diet changes (most of which I already did), and more importantly hydrate better, all the time.

Damn, did they put it behind bars so it couldn't hurt anyone else?

Oh, and I'm paying my medical bills this week. My out-of-pocket is about $2200, and the whole thing cost a little less than $20,000, so it was less than I thought it would be. But it still sucks. $2200 would buy a lot of okra.

If you were to dress it up and take it out on the town, what kind of mens fashions would you suggest for its body type/age/personality?

Also, does it smell of bbq sauce?

I'm still waiting to see the numbers on that graph. 1" squares? 1' squares?

Wait, it came outta Jed's pecker. 1 millimicrominimeter squares.

No, but it felt about that size. Each division is one millimeter.
OWWWWW. Ooo, man. I'm getting a big ol' glass of water right now, too.

That was the best bookstore I've been to EVER! Rolled the idea past the boy and my ex, and they rolled right back at me...their eyes, that is. Then I couldn't get them out of there, because they were so enamored by the sheer size of the baseball book section. Took a good half hour just to get them to move on to the regional book section. And...they even bought some books. Shocked me silly.

So...to all who read this, if BRJ recommends a great place to go, ACT ON THAT RECOMMEDATION!!!
