And for the folks who like the bar scene, Westport is a GREAT time to mingle with other drunken fans from both sides. Last year at Kelly's was a blast.

I'm usually not a fan of Westport, but it's a lot of fun during the championship weekend. A few drunken ******* KSU fans last year (*gasp*) but most of them were really nice.

Dont forget Free State Brewing Company in Lawrence, makers of one of the top 15 beers in the world, Free State Owd Mac's Imperial Stout. Look it up, visit, they are great.

Stay away from 75th Street Brewing Company, they have cookie-cutter craft beer with not much of interest.

For a great meal.......................the Crown Prime Ribs @ Jack's Stack

I'll offer my help once again this year as well. Not like you sooners are unfamiliar with KC at this point :)

My biggest recommendation is if you are wanting to go out and drink to stay somewhere between downtown and the plaza. hotel rooms are more but cheaper than a DUI...KC has horrible mass transit especially to the burbs. If you are familying it, stay in the burbs. Most hotels on the Plaza have not opened up rooms yet until both teams are decided so that's something to think about if you can't find a hotel. They aren't requiring 2 night stays...at least the ones I'm familiar with. The Marriott, Sheraton, Embassy, Hyatt, & Westin and Hotel Phillips downtown are all quality places to stay.

KC Crimson's shuttle recommendation I highly recommend as well.

We're not going this year but looks like a few of us are still going (selling most of our tickets) so if you see some purple on the 50 yard line on the OU side....don't throw anything at us :)

[email protected] if you need any specific information...not that you trust me over a sooner :)

If you need any bar information especially, that's what I'm good at. I live downtown so I know all the ins and outs of the center of KC and the attractions so email me and I'll be glad to be another CVB agent.

I'm assuming you're making this statement from personal experience. Have you ever been to England, Germany, Mexico, Ireland or Austria tried some of the better beers there? How would you rate them in comparison? I've been to shops here in Europe and several bars with huge international selections as well as local stuff. I've never seen this beer mentioned. Is it exported from the U.S.? I don't drink a lot of beer myself, but when I go and actually do imbibe, I very often catch heat because of the general perceived quality of American beer. It would be nice to be able to order something up for these guys that can actually compare.

I'm impressed with the museums in KC! I never would have guessed that the American Jazz museum is located there, although I have heard some good jazz in my few brief visits there.

I'll throw in some more attractions and recommendations...I agree with almost all of suggested above except all those chain restaurants :)

Crown Center - http://www.crowncenter.com (great place for the kids to blow a day, free attractions)
Union Station - http://www.unionstation.org (cool history of the station museum, couple great restaurants and just a cool place to see the renovation
Liberty memorial - http://www.libertymemorialmuseum.org (Country's only WWI museum. Can ride to the top of the memorial if the weather is good and has 2 artifact museums...larger museum now under construction
KC Holiday Market - http://www.kcholidaymarket.org (just found out about this last night, the City market area is being converted into a holiday village. This is the first year so not sure what to expect
Kemper modern art museum (to go along with the Nelson recommended above) - http://www.kemperart.org

Restaurants: (KC//Crimson hit the burbs/chains more, I'll get some more KC originals)
Lidia's - Great north Italian food
Garozzo's - Great southern Italian food
City Tavern - great fresh oyster bar http://www.citytavern.net
Westport Flea Market - best burgers in KC
Thai Place - http://www.kcthaiplace.com/
Lulu's (Thai food) - downtown
Ponak's (mexican food, southwest blvd...best margaritas in town hands down) -
Bo Ling's (chinese) - http://www.bolings.com/

Bars (I probably recommend more young people bars (under 40) just to let you know...)
Kellys - KC institution, if you've been up here for a prior game, you've probably been here. Westport area
Velvet Dog/Empire Room - younger hipper crowd. Very cool place better when the deck in the back is open..midtown area http://www.velvetdog.com
Vivace - Cool martini bar in the rivermarket
Grand Emporium - Renovated and has live music nightly http://www.grandemporium.com
Harry's Country Club - new bar that is doing the old country roadhouse theme in the rivermarket. Becoming very popular.
Harry's Bars & Tables - westport. Cool bar.
Grandfalloon - Sports bar on the plaza. Good scenery. http://www.thegranfalloon.com
Mi Cocina - athletes and the black pants set.
The Drink on the Plaza - opening end of the month....high end dance club
DB's - gay dance club downtown
Evolution - techno club in westport

That's all for now....when you guys come back for the Championship game next time it's in KC or for the bball tournament after 05 we'll have a whole new set of recommendations for downtown KC which is getting a new arena and a 9 block entertainment district which is sure to be the hub of future parties.

If by 'good scenery' you mean 'hot chicks', then yes, I concur. Wholeheartedly.

For some reason, I can't remember the name of that sushi place on the Plaza where the beautiful people hang out... what's that called? It's another good place to go for the scenery. Actually, any of the bars in the Plaza area are great for people watching.

Powercat - you mentioned that you live downtown - I do too. Where around here do you hang out?

I'm impressed with the museums in KC! I never would have guessed that the American Jazz museum is located there, although I have heard some good jazz in my few brief visits there.

Craft beer is one of my favorite hobbies. In addition to homebrewing, I've tried and rated over 1600 different beers, from everywhere in the country and around the world. My ratings are archived online at http://ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=6533 - I have been to Free State many times, and enjoy their eye for quality.

If you look at the top 50 beers in the world on RateBeer.com, Owd Mac's Imperial Stout is rated #14, though only by about 30 people, considering that it's available at the brewery only on cask and not available in growlers. Sitting at #14 with only 30 ratings is suspect, but there's something to be said when an American-made imperial stout sits up there with world class trappist ales such as Westvleteren and Rochefort.

If you make it to Free State, it's possible that the Imperial Stout will not be available, as it's a bit rare. If they have the Old Backas Barleywine give that a try, as it's also rated in the top 100 in the world. They also have other good stouts, porters and IPA/pale ales that they offer. Plus the food is great!

Cheers mate,

Mike

Kona Grill...sushi place. Good scenery. Also Mi Cocina has some nice looking patrons.

SoonerinKCMO....John's deck in the summertime, Tanners/Quaff just for general sports watching, Minskys in the rivermarket is good for sports. Harrys Country Club. That's about all, can't get many friends to head downtown yet :)

What neighborhood you live in? I just bought a place in Quality Hill....we love it, can't wait for the H&R block/arena/entertainment district to get going.

mrowl...about 3/4 mile from Sheraton to Kellys. Easier to just jump in a cab...cost you like $5. Not one good straight path to/from there but if you want to try, Sheraton is at 47th Jefferson, Kellys is at Westport Rd. and Mill St.

the upper deck is pretty mixed usually but 322 would officially be the OU side.

if I had to pick only 1 BBQ place, which one should I go to?

Note a fair question.

If you want to go to a "nice" BBQ place, go to Fiorellas. Beautiful place, great food.

If you want to go to a BBQ place that is brimming with local flavor and coolness, go to Arthur Bryants. From the black and white pictures of celebrities on the wall to the smoke-stained ceiling tiles and red cream soda, Bryants is my favorite. I'll take a pit guy who looks like he could be in the Blues Brothers movie over a waitress named Tiffany any day.

I've lived over by the library for about a year and a half now. It's OK - but I think the Quality Hill area would be quieter and more to my liking. I'm actually planning on moving in a few months just so I don't spend all day every day in a two block radius.

I checked out your website - looks pretty cool. I'm sure I'll be spending some more time over there.

Okay, I also have to plug Dixon's Chili which is just up the road from the stadium. They basically serve you a giant plate of ground beef and you add everything yourself. It's hard to make it sound wonderful, but it really is a gem. Perhaps some of the other locals can back me up. :-D

Not to put too fine a point on it, but....Fiorella's is Jack's Stack. You're probably referring to the newer location @ 95th and Metcalf. (Suggestion: Crown Prime BBQ Ribs)

Agreed about Bryant's. Back in the day, you could slip the counterman a folded dollar bill when you handed him your plate and a "big beef" sandwich would magically grow into a two pound feast for three or four.

Sigh.....nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

........and at Dixon's, you can build your chili any way you like it.

a)All meat....no beans.

b)Tamale spread. (Chili meat and beans over tamales)

c)Combo.....chili with beans, no tamales.

the above either,

1) dry, 2) soupy, or 3) greasy.

Add grated onions, cheese, cayenne pepper, etc. to taste.

Hey....it was good enough for Harry Truman!

opks....I completely forgot about Bretts. Cool to go in there and just see his batting title (one of them) and gold glove and the awesome sports pictures. Pizza is good there.

Fritz's is a great place for the kids....somebody mentioned it...in Crown Center. You can spend a whole day at Crown Center and not spend much cash...great place for families.

Sooner24....yes it did close about a year ago now. Rumors abound as to why but the most abundant rumor is the owner is old and the family wasn't interested in carrying it on. My personal opinion is the food was below average....it had been slipping for years. I will bet it opens up w/in a year or 2 with all the stuff that is coming downtown right now...new owners. If you want a small divey type Italian joint, go to Anthony's downtown....this is a true local "family" joint. 701 Grand. Building is very unassuming. When I was there last time the waiter was telling his friend about the menu, pointed to something and said gotti really liked that one. Not sure if he was B.S.'ing or not but I wasn't calling him out on it. Very unique place anymore in this day of Olive Garden chains. Guys kissing checks there aren't gay, they are respectful.

No doubt the food and service both had gone downhill from the first time I ate there in the late 80's until the last time I ate there in 2001. I really prefer Cascones but staying downtown made for an easy walk to The Garden.

Another place that I would recommend if just for the atmosphere is The Savoy. This place is a piece of history from the famous people that have eaten there to the 100 year old mural painted above the bar. It has been many years since I have been there so I won't speculate what the food is like today. Maybe one of the KC tour guides could help out. ;)

Hey opk, do you ever eat at La Cocina del Puerco in OP? The best mexican food evar!!!!

KCPowercat
11/19/2004, 01:20 PM
24....yes both Savoy and Majestic are great steak/seafood places in the middle of downtown. If anybody is staying downtown I can help them out big time, just let me know. Our downtown area is really improving but it's not as in your face as westport and the plaza, so for a short weekend I just concentrate on the main stuff. Just wait till you come back after 2005, downtown will be THE place to be.

Couple other neat little attractions to see:

City Lights - On the south side of the downtown marriott they have installed lights that they use for Christmas displays. If you drive up I-35 at night, you won't be able to miss it. Kind of neat to sit in the park just to the south and watch the display on the surrounding buildings.

Here's a bad picture I took of the building last year. 20 stories of Powercat & Sooner :)
http://www.kcskyscrapers.com/albums/downtown/citylights_big12teams.jpg

First Fridays - Since this will be Dec. this event won't be nearly as large but if you are into art, all the downtown art galleries in the Crossroads district open up on every First Friday of the month to show off their art. There can be some really interesting things shown. http://www.crossroadscommunityassociation.org for more information and maps. Runs from 7-10p on Friday...but I'm sure most will be at some sort of pep rally.

opksooner
11/19/2004, 01:29 PM
24, The Savoy is as fine a seafood restaurant as you'll find in the midwest. (also McCormick and Schmick's on the Plaza) The service there is as you might have found in a fine restaurant of 70 years ago, and the restaurant and hotel in which it is located are are the National Register of Historic....whatevers, a restored look at the past.

Yes, La Cocina del Puerco is very, very good. When you walk in the door, the fragrances/smells scream out "MEXICO.....SI!"

Is KC BBQ as good as Memphis BBQ?

Stepping back to avoid the inevitable BBQ smack explosion. ;)
It's a matter of personal taste. I love Memphis-style BBQ, and The Rendezvous is still the best BBQ I've ever had. Truly amazing. To me, KC-style is too sweet and molasses-y; I'm just not a fan.

Oh, and to the original post:

Garozzo's is freaking good Italian food. I've been to the one they just built in Wichita, KS and it's great. Prices - expect to pay $25 a person, more if you're serious wine drinkers.

Beware the Plaza III. I'm talking $50 a person. PrideTrombone's still mad at me for that one.

Here's the link to the Platte County (county where the airport is) convention & visitor's bureau. http://www.co.platte.mo.us/vpage2.html It lists all the hotels in and around the airport and places to go chow around here. Best BBQ in KC is The Smokestack..........now called Fiorella's Jack Stack. I know nobody here likes beer......BUT IF YOU DID........go to the Powerplant in Parkville for the finest hand crafted beers around. Ask for Gordon (brewmeister) and tell 'im "Ted sent me here".

If anyone needs more detail, feel free to email me: [email protected]

We have a Garozzos here in Wichita. I've eaten there one time, it was enough. There definitely will not be a second.

We also have a Strouds as well. They serve THE BEST home cooked food EVAR. If you have a party of more than 2-3, they will bring out your side dishes (mashed potatoes/gravy, green beans, etc.) family style, in big bowls, and as much as you want. The chicken fried steak is in a class of it's own, and on most occasions, requires its own plate, due to the size of the monster. This place comes highly recommended.

True, a franchise is a franchise. That's why they don't compare with the original that is not a franchise. They were single restaurants that somebody decided they needed to open in other areas...those will never been of the same quality. I bet the first Pizza Hut opened in Wichita was much better than what we see today.

There are a few spots in between Westport and the Plaza that deserve mentioning for nightlife. The levy which is very much like Brother's accept has more of the 25-30+ age group. For the people still in college or running around with that crowd try The Point they are both just a few blocks from both the Plaza and Westport.

I also have recently found a great KC Italian joint it is called IL Centro. It is located around 51st and Main just a few blocks south of the Plaza on the SE corner in a white building next to Minsky’s. Bad thing is they do not take reservations and its quant (small) and there is always a wait but it has always been worth it. The prices are great the atmosphere is great and the food in spectacular. And if you are in the Plaza area there is going to be a wait anywhere you go even if it wasn’t Big XII weekend.

Other KC ideas you cant go wrong with.

Tanners: Sports bar several locations
Minsky’s: KC’s version of The Hideaway several locations

Also you other KC peeps think of a Brunch place and post it here for me I am leaving till Thursday and cant reply to this msg.(http://mb7.scout.com/fouinsiderfrm1.showMessage?topicID=90845.topic) I hardly ever eat Brunch other than First Watch and that place in Brookside the name slips my mind.

Last year we went all around town trying to find those hand warmer things (the chemical type that heat up when they're exposed to the air). People will try to sell them to you at like $5/each at the game, and they're hard to find. Galyans (Dick's now?) in Town Center (119th & Nall) has about 50 different varieties in about 5000 boxes. Sounds like a small thing, but those saved me from freezing to death in 2000. :-D

Oh, and for the record, the cops were giant *******s in Westport last night. I realize they're just doing their job, but playing tough guy with people standing on the corner trying to hail a cab by pulling out your night stick and yelling "get off the f*ing street" and getting in everybody's face seems excessive. Nobody was arguing or causing any trouble at all. We all backed up immediately, and still had to deal with a bunch of badge-clad alpha dogs yelling in our faces and threatening to take us to jail. It was really disappointing to be honest, as I generally have a lot of respect for police and everything they do. I've never seen those guys get so hostile in Westport before, and that place gets a LOT more thuggish than it was last night.

We'll be down there again tonight, though I might have better luck with the cops if I just drive myself home instead of trying to hail a cab to be responsible.

No doubt. I've been to Mardi Gras twice now, and the cops down there were amazingly cool during a very difficult time. I'm curious what it's like on 6th street in Austin.

We went to Kelly's again last night, and it wasn't fun at all. All the Colorado fans were out, and they were being rather abusive. I was having a decent conversation with of a few of them, when one of their drunken friends got in my girlfriend's face and started yelling something inappropriate. His friends grabbed him and dragged him off quickly an apologized, which was nice, so I let it go. It was just sort of a hostile night in general though. Lots of fighting and name calling. It's hard to believe we were in the same place that had provided so much fun the night before. Westport on Saturday is always hit or miss though.

Overall, it was fantastic to spend time with sports fans in KC over the weekend. I was lucky enough to sit by cool people at the game, consumed my weight in beer without puking, and escaped without being assaulted. I'll chalk this up as another successful weekend. :-)

Mike

Given that Imperial/Double IPA's and Stouts are an American tradition, thanks to Vinnie Cilurzo at Russian River Brewing, I see no reason why Free State's wouldn't be considered tops. Russian River's "Pliny The Elder" wins best Double IPA year and year out at GABFand The World Beer Cup. Great Divide's Hercules Double IPA is right up there with "Stairway to Heaven" in my book. Thankfully, I can drive the 15 minutes from Platte County over to McCabe's Liquors at the race track to find Great Divide and Boulder Brewing Company products as they don't sell in Missouri. The Power Plant Brewery in Parkville is another good brewery to try out if you're in the area.

There are several ways to get to Westport from Arrowhead but none of them is a straight shot. Here is the most straightforward approach:

1) Take I-435 south to the 51st St exit...continue west a few blocks to Blue Parkway and follow it west. This street morphs into Emanuel Cleaver III Parkway.....continue west to the Plaza. Find J. C. Nichols Parkway...(it runs right by PF Chang's) and take it north to the second stoplight. (41st) Turn left and there you are. 41st and Pennsylvania is your destination. Kelly's, Harpo's (my fave) The Hurricane, America's Bar, etc. etc. etc.

If you get to Harpo's, say hi to Christina.

Try Rudy's Tenampa in between westport and the plaza on westport rd. The best Mexican food you have ever had.
