3 hours is not it.

I put one in at 10 when I started watching Survivor on ReplayTV and just remembered it.

this sounds like an experiment worthy of more testing.

It wassn't a Beano Beer was it? I'd hate to see one of those exploded all over the freezer.

I never go beyond 1 1/2 hours. Unless I forget too.

I prefer to make an ice and water bath in a cooler or even the sink over the freezer. The bath can get the beers cold in about half the time. Plus, you don't run the risk of forgetting.

Beano beer doesn't freeze, the alcohol content is too high.

An ice bath, a combination of a full container of ice and water to the (near) top (depending on the amount of beer you add) will chill beer to totally drinkable temps within 15 minutes.

Of course liquid h20 conducts heat much better than the air in a freezer, but I don't want to go to the trouble of creating an ice bath all the time when I don't have one already cold.

If you have convection in addition to an ice bath, you can chill a beer to the ice melting point in less than 10 minutes what with the reduction of the boundary layer and all... The same basic principle that makes a bath seem hotter when you move around in it versus just sitting still.

However, I didn't ask what was the quickest way to chill a beer... I just wanted to know what was the wait associated with just putting one in the freezer.

On a somewhat related note, has anyone ever put one in the freezer for somewhere around 2 hours? If you don't jar the bottle too much while removing it from the freezer and while opening it, the ice crystals won't form until you pour it into the glass... It's really cool to wach the liquid beer turn into slush as it hits the bottom of the glass.

I think an ice bath.

I've heard the ice bath method works even better if you add salt to it. I always forget so I've never tried it out.

I was telling Norm about a beer ice cream recipe at the tailgate. I think I read it here one time... There was something about boiling Guinness until it reduced to a syrup and then using that to make the ice cream.

I think a dry chemical fire extinguisher does it in less than 10 min! You must have one of those lying around.

Guinness Ice Cream

1 1/2 cans guiness draught beer
1 large egg
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup milk
2 cups heavy whipping cream

Pour Guinness into a pan. (Note, you should drink the leftover 1/2 can while
you prepare
this recipe.) Boil it down to 1 1/2 cups, and then leave on the stove on low
heat. Mix the
egg and sugar in a bowl. Mix in milk, then mix in the warm Guinness
concentrate. Mix in
cream. Chill mix in refrigerator for about an hour. Mix in ice cream maker.
Makes around
2 quarts.

2 things to note

1. you can use any guiness like dark draught beer (I used young's double
chocolate stout and it was extremely good).

2. In my expirience you just need barely over the 1 1/2 cups you need to add
to
the recipe to boil. It doesn't boil off very much unless you cook it for a
long time
I found around 5 minutes to be sufficient. So I would say you don't need
much more
than 18-20 oz instead of the 24 the recipe calls for.

Did anybody ever answer the question? It seems to be less than 2 hours, unless slush is the goal. I'd say if it takes more than 30 minutes, go ahead with the ice bath thing. Or you could be like a guy I knew out in Bessie who used to keep a case of Busch behind the seat of his truck and drink 'em hot -- and in the summer I mean HOT.

Said the first bite was great, but that it was a taste that got old fast.

On Mythbusters, they took a can of room temperature beer then put it into a bucket. They sprayed it with a fire extinguisher and with in a matter of seconds, it was a perfect drinking temperature.

You need to use a CO2 extinguisher. When we were out on manuevers, the standard practice was for the First Shirt to yell "Simulated fire in the beer box" and then blast the hell out of the beer with CO2. Frosty!!!!

10-12 hours later, I would load up one of the rental boats with chicks and beer and let the good times commence
