I have mixed feelings about this. It would be justice served for Baker for sure to get that additional year. But we've been landing some highly touted QB's it seems, and I would fear a thing like this may cause someone to back off a verbal agreement. For sure the short term effect would be huge for us. Especially in continuing to land good wide receivers.

^This. The LOL part is that it appears TT would have little to say in this decision.

It didn't pass. Vote was 5-5. If Mayfield wasn't vital to OUr team, or a QB on one of the bottom feeders, this would have passed. It'll pass at some point after he leaves. Bet on it. Common sense and logic says you can't take away a walk-ons year of eligibility if you're not paying for any of the tuition.

Then I guess it's a good thing it didn't pass. :ambivalence:

It will be interesting to see what Mayfield does after this season since he is on track to graduate. If he decides to play for yet another team and does well, it might make the big12 look a bit like dumasses.

good words from Guerin Emig on the issue:

As for me and my Sooners... Could Texas Tech please send OU some sand to pound? Better yet, send us another Heisman Trophy candidate starting quarterback.

One day after they voted, they are adding language to get the rule change to pass: part of the new language being discussed would allow a walk-on's school to offer a scholarship to keep him. If the walk-on then still elected to transfer within the conference, the player would face the league's transfer eligibility restrictions.

Since Mayfield was a walk-on it shoulda been a no brainer.

Glad he's here for his extra year. Now stay healthy.

We've been getting highly touted QBs for some time now.

How many of them, have the drive and the talent of Baker? He's a Championship level QB. He isn't the reason we got thumped out last year. He's our best bet, to put us back in the spot.

And the first place you go is mixed emotions, and absolutely unknown, unproven HS athletes? And we don't even know if he's going to use the extra year? He's coming into this season, on the Heisman radar. He has another season like last year, he's probably gone, unless they're stacked to run it the year after and he doesn't this year. Who else, could you possibly want? Or what else could you envision. That kid has things, you just can't teach.

Pound sand, Tech! Pound alllllll of the sand :D:D:D

I like the modified proposal better than the original, actually. If it's all about what is best for the student-athletes, it is better for them to have a chance to get a scholarship at their original school than to have to transfer, sit out a year of their sport, and then be eligible for whatever's left.
