You really think that ban made any difference? - it's based on the honor system. The only real way to protect the blood supply is with reliable tests. Last time I gave blood they asked me a bunch of questions on behaviors that required honest answers. They didn't ask if I was gay, but they did ask if I engaged in gay sex. Anyone who has been to the UK and eaten beef over there has to be honest too.
