THAT is interesting. The ratings distinguish between teams that have compiled impressive win-loss records against strong competition and teams that have defeated weaker opponents. Thanks for the post!

Does this stuff get included in the playoff committee's discussions? Surely it does.

Final rankings through the BCS era (and I assume, for the committee) have always been based on a blend of how good they think a team is (power rankings) and what they deserve (resume). Sagarin is just a power ranking and just one formula at that - there are others. I wouldn't expect the committee to line-up with Sagarin, but for the most part the CFP and Sagarin contain the same top 10 teams.

I was very happy jumping from 11 to 7 this week. Perhaps Sagarin power will help us get into the top 4 next week AFTER we beat TCU....oh lord this season is fun and scary at the same time.

except for the ones that are bold the rankings are a big difference, OU 2/7 - BU 5/10, ND 6/4 - TCU 8/18. ironically the committee has 3 of the 4 Big12 teams lower, significant lower and nd higher.

FWIW, I really didn't expect them to match up. It was more of a sarcastic answer. I'm really not worried about it. OU has played much better this year than I expected. IF we can win out I'll be elated.

Yes, and for the most part, the bold teams are the ones where power ranking and resume diverge the most. Baylor has played exactly 1 team with a pulse - and they lost. So their power ranking at 8-1 with almost all the 8 wins being blowouts is still good, but their resume sucks. The committee also looks at other things besides power and resume and I think that explains TCU. They tend to hate teams with poor defenses and they were just waiting to put the hammer down on TCU if they ever faltered. Their escapes from TTech and KSU raised concerns about their defense and getting blown out by OSU confirmed them. I'm sure the injuries to Doctson and the unknown status of Boykin played in there too - TCU really is a 1 man (or 2 man) show. They hate the OU loss to 4-6 Texas, especially since it can't be consider "early". But I think the biggest hurdle to OU making the CFP is winning the next 2 games - not the 1 loss. I'm somewhat amazed at all the paranoia and butthurt our fans have about something the committee hasn't even done yet, but I guess I shouldn't be. There are so many important games yet to be played in the next few weeks - should save the butthurt for when it's needed :P

Why do you think Clemson and ND are rated so high in both of these? Help me understand? I did not think their schedules would have been so tough.

This "committee" has its biases and agenda, and evidence is irrelevant. The only way to get them to budge is enormous public pressure and outcry.

They don't care what Sagarin says; they have their canard of the head-to-head on whorn, and they're sticking with it. And no amount of inconsistency anywhere between teams will bother them in the least.

So the loss to the horns shouldn't count? I don't even see it being a head-to-head issue at all. We lost to the horns in week 5 period. Since then, they have consistently moved us up due to winning and "game control" combined with others above us losing and dropping. Up until Baylor, we had no signature wins. Now that we have one, we jump to 7th - I don't see a problem here. If 2 more wins against ranked teams and a conference title doesn't do it, then I say tough sh.it - should have beat the horns. Given what the committee did last year after Baylor won the conference, our biggest worry is TCU and OSU - not the committee. Had BU played a decent team like Tennessee OOC last year, they would have been in. Had BU and TCU switched roles last year with TCU beating BU, but TCU slipping against WVU, TCU would have been in because they played Minnesota(!).
