View Full Version : Why don't all big 12 teams play on championship week?

Seems to me like every big 12 team should play on the final week of the season (Championship week). This year they only have Baylor/Texas and WVU/K state. What are the restrictions on these? does it have to do with TV schedule? Obviously it didn't matter last year for TCU and Baylor but it is better than not playing on championship weekend when all the other playoff contenders are making a case in championship games.

The conference should put its teams in the best position possible, and playing that week is definitely better and since you cannot predict who will be good just schedule all the teams to play in the final week.

Initially I was going to start this thread about the logistics of moving Bedlam to Dec 5th but that would be extremely dumb with us having a two week bye.

Because that's just what everyone would be expecting.

Stop the crazy talk! If the conference put its teams in the best position possible, it wouldn't be the Big 12, now would it? ;)

Doesn't really matter.

The best teams in the Big 12 don't put themselves in a good position to make the CFP, why should the conference as a whole help them?

Oklahoma State played Central Michigan (5-4), UTSA (1-8), and Central Arkansas (6-3 but FCS so who cares)

Baylor played SMU (1-8), Rice (4-5), and Lamar (seriously.. Lamar? 4-5)

TCU played SMU (1-8), Minnesota (omg! a P5 school finally 4-5), and SFA (3-6.. Hey Lamar is looking better)

Oklahoma played Akron (4-5), Tulsa (5-4), and Tennessee (a second P5 school.. Yay! 5-4 and SEC to boot)...

The only team in that group to not play a FCS opponents is Oklahoma. The only two teams to play P5 teams as opponents are TCU and Oklahoma. The only one to play a P5 team with a winning record is Oklahoma. This conference is embarrassing us as much if not more than the Texas game. Baylor, TCU, and OSU need put their big boy pants on and start playing teams outside the conference that will give this conference some respect because without a title game we are going the way of the dodo in championship football.

This year was particularly weak on the OOC, but it's not always that way. Recently OSU played FSU, WVU played Bama, TCU played LSU, KSU played Auburn, ISU always plays Iowa. Tech played Arkie. OU and the horns always play somebody. The only team that consistently plays cupcakes is Baylor and they do it on purpose, not just scheduling quirks. And they got smited last year exactly because of it, so it's not a conference disease.

Trying to create a scheduling diversion on championship week would not fool anybody. As a matter of fact it would just make the Big 12 look more desperate. We'll see how it all works out but after last year it seems to me the 'committee' is sending a loud and clear message that the conference championship game is a large factor in their decision making process.

People can talk about out of conference scheduling but you know it's years in advance. If they do want to schedule tougher competition in short notice it involves losing $$$$. Nobody knew the impact of this silly 4 team (with FIVE power conferences) would play out his way. Actually math does tend to differ. It won't matter within ten years it'll become an 8 team playoff.

It probably will be an 8 team playoff but without other changes, all that will mean is the Big 12 will get one team in and on occasion two, if they are 12-0 and 11-1. The SEC will get two or maybe three, with a two loss SEC team being a distinct possibility.
