View Full Version : Is the recent Bergdahl decision/recommendation a nod to get Zippy out of the fire?

I cannot fathom how the recommendation " that a punitive discharge and confinement would be inappropriate (http://www.military.com/daily-news/2015/10/10/bergdahl-should-avoid-prison-time-another-army-official-says.html) given all the circumstances" would ever be uttered. IMO, just he opposite.

Sounds like cover for Zippy and his "best soldier in the universe" and rose garden dog and pony show show and comment...

I am not in the Army, but I know the difference between a Lt. Col. and a Major General...
Lt. Col. Mark Visger recommended that Bergdahl's case proceed not to a general court-martial, where Bergdahl if found guilty could have been subject to life in prison and a dishonorable discharge.
And to my understanding, the 2-star has not made a determination yet as to going Courts Martial or Special Courts Martial. Given this case, if only special courts martial, why would any one ever stay at their post?

If it comes to this, MY point exactly... A political decision, not an Army or military decision.

Ummm,Maj. Gen Kenneth Dahl led the actual investigation in Afghanistan and also
said that any further jail time would be "inappropriate". His investigation indicated
that Bergdahl was intent on reporting bad command leadership and that he showed
no sympathy for the Taliban. I don't know who the 2 star is that makes the final
decision but that's two senior officers with the same recommendation.

I'm not defending Bergdahl by any stretch of the imagination, merely trying to clarify
what is going on.

Anybody trying to clarify what is going on best be aware that top level brass are more politician than soldiers, and serve at the discretion of Commander-in-Chief Zippy, who has shown considerable willingness to s*hitcan brass that doesn't toe the zippy line.

Absolutely, Vet, I've seen at least two members of his platoon interviewed and
they pulled no punches. I said all I wanted to do was clarify...that is, correctly
indicate that a 2-star had commented, not just the JAG commander. Sometimes,
threads head off in the wrong direction....jus sayin...

By your 'logic' anything said by Gen David Patreaus would also be considered a lie.

Seems he's quoted quite a bit and taken seriously by certain folks.

Pardon me but I'll take the word of a person who actually led the investigation over some Bored Poster Hosers.

Do you suppose this fact was a secret to anyone within the global intelligence community? Spying on allies isn't a security issue -- it's a diplomatic issue. The American people deserve transparency in how its nation conducts itself with its friends. That information is critical for conducting a proper election within our own country. The only thing that resulted from that information was a lot of embarrassment. That's why Bergdahl's leak of the diplomatic cables was so critically important.

I assumed we spied on every country just like I assumed virtually every country spied on us but it sure wasn't Snowden's call to reveal who we were, in fact, spying on...particularly with our stated allies. Spying on foreign governments isn't illegal and certainly isn't bad policy on the part of the US. I'd be critical of a policy that wasn't trying to obtain as much intelligence as possible regarding foreign governments. But I'm sure that many of those governments reviewed their counter espionage policies and made it more difficult for the US to obtain information.

It isn't critical for the US public to know everything about how we conduct our security operations. In fact, it would be disastrous if they did.

To say that spying on allies is not a security issue, rather it is a diplomatic issue is
not correct. It becomes diplomatic when the ally finds out. It remains a security
issue, no matter what. While I don't know for certain, I would not be surprised that
spying on Israel helped catch Jonathan Pollard. Further, keeping up on what the allies
are doing just makes common sense, in this evershrinking global neighborhood....

Whether it makes good sense or not, and I dispute that it does, the notion that anyone was surprised by this revelation is nonsense.

What really bothers me is that more people are focused on attacking Snowden demanding he return to the United States to be charged instead of focusing on the illegal and unconstitutional actions of our intelligence agencies, government, and the specific individuals involved. Between Snowden and an NSA analyst knowingly violating the 4th amendment, the NSA analyst is the one who needs to be put before a firing squad.

The entire rotten edifice of the intelligence community needs to be collapsed. It's proof positive of a government out of control and well beyond the founding intent of this country. Frankly, I don't care one single iota for the national entity known as the 'United States.' I only care about the principles the nation was founded upon and ours is a government that divorced itself from those principles fairly early in our republic's history.

The more the rotten filth from our government is exposed, the better.

I'm a big fan of Snowdens. I think he did the country, and by that I mean the citizens and not big intrusive government, a great service.

Bergdahl on the other hand should be executed forthwith!

Yep. Bergdahl is a traitor. No question.

Bingo!

and he will not do jail time to save zippy from being embarrassed. I cannot believe that zippy has been able to skew the military so far from what is right... that a deserter may be non-judicially punished.

The US government doesn't want Snowden to come back because they don't want the information coming out in his trial about the massive surveillance they are conducting on
average Americans.

Most officers above the rank of Lt. Colonel are nothing but politicians in uniform and one of the reasons why I strongly discourage my children from ever considering a career in the military.

Same here as well. Military is now full of queers and politicos. Don't want either anywhere near my kids.

On my calls with my wife (for sure on international), we give a hearty FU to the NSA every time...

Shut your piehole and get me a Diablo sammich and a Dr. Pepper, ya tick turd.

If you lived in Tucson you might be an old roommate of mine. Though I think he may have quoted it more accurately. I swear he was in one of the pictures of a poorly spelled sign (he wasn't holding it) at a Tucson Tea Party rally a while back. He claims it wasn't him but it sure looked like him.

I started listening to the second season of Serial about Bergdahl. He's an idiot. He paid a high price with his 5 years of captivity in NW Pakistan but I can get on board with whatever court martial is required. He didn't intend to do what he did but that's why they have rules. I'm only on episode 3 but we moved heaven and earth to try to find that fool.

Actions have consequences. Time for *****footing is way over. Desertion in time of war should be maximum punished. If he is not made an example, others will not be dissuaded. What a sorry and weak country we have become...

It sounds like he's getting a general court martial. Isn't that the strongest punishment?
