To be fair, the UT fanbase (if their boards and my UT friends are any indication) is furious over yet another bull**** stupid *** decision by their AD. They hate the guy for this kind of bull****. I'm surprised they haven't run him out of town on a rail.

Yes, Steve Patterson is doing some dick moves. He is just squeezing every nickel he can out for the poor, struggling for money, texass atheletic programs.

He's like Jerry Jones.

And yet, when they think about it, the AD and admin are such perfect avatars of Texas-ness. Truly representative of their program, their school, their city and their state: cheap-jack posers.

I'm not sure Tech can afford to send its 400-member band at $100 each, in addition to transportation, lodging and meal cost.

And of course Tech will return the favor when they meet in Lubbock next year. Based on how cheap Steve Patterson is, you can be guaran-damn-teed that he is NOT going to foot the $100 per member ticket for UT's band to go. Rather, he'll pass the cost onto the members or something awful

I think Patterson has already riled the whorns on his policy for sending the longwhorn band to away games now. The full band does not travel anymore except to the Cotton Bowl and one other in-state game (TCU or Hypocrite U). Did you notice at ND they only had their pep band???

Yeah, they're pissed!

Oops! I guess they can only travel to OU-texas OR TCU/Hypocrite U! Would LOVE to hear the whorn crowd if pep band marched into Cotton Bowl! :)

While I try not to miss a chance to pile on the whorns, I think this is one instance where it's unwarranted. It looks like from this article that the non-Texas Big 12 universities (including us) having been charging the opposing band members school's for their away game band tickets since the beginning, just the Big 12 Texas schools haven't when they play each other.

I personally think (fwiw) that each university should give say 50 tickets (or whatever) free to an opposing team's smaller pep band (if that school wants to foot the bill for travel expenses.lodging etc--at discounted rates, I mean the band doesn't need to stay at the Hilton but perhaps one night a Motel 6) and then the traveling university should be able to purchase a finite number of more tickets at face value (say 50 more) for only those special games -- tv prime-time games, games at the end of the season which would decide a conference championship (since our conference doesn't have a CC game), etc.

I wasn't a band geek, but our band playing Boomer Sooner during away games, not continually throughout a drive like they appear to do now, but at critical times during the TOs of a critical offensive drive/critical D stand is a tradition and probably helps.

and, again fwiw, it appears to me that these ""bean counter business mgrs of all the Big 12 Universities (not just the whorns) are trying to discourage any band travel to away games to save money.

http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Society/2015/0910/Charge-the-marching-band-Why-Big-12-Conference-changed-its-tunehttp://

In July, the Big 12 Conference schools made the decision to charge these fees uniformly, ending a "handshake" deal held by Texas schools in an attempt to try and recoup financial losses as student ticket sales continue to fall nationally and a new ruling on Cost Attendance mandates that student athletes be paid a twice-monthly stipend, in addition to their scholarships.

When these schools merged with the Big Eight Conference schools to form the Big 12 Conference, “the four Texas schools [Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Texas and Baylor] kept that agreement, while the other schools charged for band tickets.”

“Through the course of time the schools determined, the business managers from the four affected universities, decided in July to go ahead and end that agreement and start charging each other for band tickets which kept it in line with what the rest of the conference was doing,” says Giovannetti. “This isn’t about rivalry, it’s just a business practice.”
