Baker Mayfield, the Texas Tech transfer, is the new starting quarterback at Oklahoma. Mayfield beat out former starter Trevor Knight and Cody Thomas to run the Sooners’ new air raid offense under new offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley. The fit seemed like fate since Riley, who was the offensive coordinator at East Carolina, tried to recruit Mayfield to play for the Pirates. Riley’s offensive style is similar to the one Mayfield played in at Lake Travis High School in Texas and at Texas Tech. Mayfield was forced to redshirt last season after a highly publicized transfer from Texas Tech following the 2013 season. Mayfield walked-on at Tech and won the starting job as a true freshman. He became a player to watch when he threw for 413 yards and four touchdowns in the season opener against SMU and he led the Red Raiders to a 5-0 start. However, he lost his starting job to Davis Webb and decided to leave the program. Mayfield tried to earn immediate eligibility in 2014, but Texas Tech blocked the request despite the fact that he was never on scholarship. Mayfield impressed throughout his redshirt season and continued to do so in the spring and through fall camp. Oklahoma’s offense started the season with high expectations after Knight shined in the 2013 Sugar Bowl against Alabama. However, that performance didn’t carry over to the 2014 season and the passing offense averaged just 203.5 yards per game, ranking 83rd nationally. In contrast, Riley’ passing offense at East Carolina last season ranked third nationally with 371.9 yards per game.
