Details have been emerging which highly suggest that both Ted Cruz's parents had become Canadian citizens prior to his birth. According to past public statements made by his father, legal opinions and documentation currently available, Rafael (Ted) Cruz was likely born of 2 Canadian citizens in Calgary back in December of 1970.

It's his mom that's the American citizen. So long as she was an American and the proper paperwork was file at the nearest consulate/embassy then he's completely eligible.

However, if it turns out he isn't eligible because of some technical snafu then he has absolutely no right to run. I take that **** seriously.

Lori Stacey is a ****ing brain dead moron. Dual citizenship has been allowed in the US since 1967. For Cruz's mother not to have been a US citizen at the time of his birth she would have had to renounce her US citizenship by going to a US embassy in Canada and signing papers that she renounced it. If she had done that I am quite sure the US State department would have produced those papers by now. Canada has never required renunciation of other citizenships to become a Canadian citizen.

I am a dual citizen of the US and Ireland and I know exactly what my legal status is. Ireland did not require me to renounce my US citizenship.

It is unConstitutional to pass a post facto law that would strip these individuals of their US citizenship and I don't think even Trump is that stupid. I do agree with him that the right to be a US citizen simply by being born here (Jus soli) should be changed. The US is one of a small minority of nations that allow citizenship in this manner.

I personally disagree with the birth right (Jus soli) basis for citizenship but it has been established law since the SCOTUS found the right hidden within the 14th admendment . Now, as more and more of the few countries who had unrestricted Jus soli get rid of it, the US will have to go through a costly and lengthy process to amend the Constitution. It will never get done.
