View Full Version : Samaje Perine weight room tale: He's stronger than you

What is Perine’s latest feat? Let’s let quarterback Trevor Knight take it from here.

“He was out for a practice or two with a busted up ankle. He wasn’t practicing so they take him into the weight room to do an arm workout. He comes back out and someone was telling us that was unreal. Samaje did 10 sets of 10 with 225 … I can’t do one set of 10 at 225.

“On the last set, he started pumping it out and, instead of looking at the bar and struggling, he just stared into the strength coach’s eyes and pumped out the last set. He’s just physically gifted.”

Good lord, I can't do 10 sets of 10 with 25 pounds. Of course I can do 10 sets of 10 of Natty light curls though. Priorities.

Samaje the true sophomore would not be able to curl Natty lights as an underager, so I guess you have him beat there ;)

None of our underage athletes drink!

Oh no of course not :P

Samaje Perine will be the reason why OU fans (and Bob Stoops) can finally let go of the almighty Sugar Bowl win.

All that strength is useless without good wheels. What's the status of his ankle? I hope it's not a chronic issue this fall.

Could they be a little more specific? I'm assuming this is bench press since 225 is the standard weight used by the pros. How much rest between sets?

Anyway, the problem child is the sets of 10. Most people who lift that much weight typically do sets of 5 (5x5) or sets of 8 (3x8). 10 sets of 10 is just a very odd number.

I'm assuming bench as well, but then how does he look at the strength coach?--lying on the bench he is looking over at the coach? That seems odd. Curling with 225 is crazy--don't think I've ever seen that.

If I had to guess, it was arm curls, not bench press... but looking at those arms, it could have been any arm exercise... how about military press :P

Military press would be easier than curls, especially if you are doing it olympic style.

I just googled that because I'm not a Crossfit workout freak :P and the images all show them standing, so I assume it would be the seated variety, as he was out of practice with an angle injury

Yeah, that is what I was thinking (and why I thought it had to be bench). 10 sets of 10 with 225 on curls? it is no wonder we have so many bicep tears. It is one thing to fail on a press exercise where there is a natural collapse, but failing on a pull gets you hurt.

Pushups.
One handed.
Slapping his chest on each rep.
With Eric Stryker standing on his back.
Wearing old fashioned golf shoes.
No rest between sets.

Danny Trejo has accepted a position as Schmitty's asst.

You typically do seated presses with dumbbells (its called the Arnold Press after the guvner) whereas this sounds like its with a bar. I typically work out with 245 on bench and 155 on military press but only curl 110.

Or a competent O-line.

He ought to be able to hold on to the ball with those guns. I can hardly wait to see him stiff-arm a defender.

At 5'7" and 165lbs I could do 2 sets of 10 @ 225 on bench after a warm up. Granted, I was in the best shape of my life at 31 yrs old (now 37). That said, I would hope TK could do 1 set! Hopefully, he was humbly joking.

Only curl 110? Sakes.

I was playing around with it this weekend. The problem is the set of 10. A set of 5 i can do 160 (35/25/10/5), but a set of 10, i was at 130 and that last rep felt like I was about to detach something ;)

110 is 64 % of my bodyweight, so yeah, seems like a lot to curl for me. I also turn 59 next month, so a lot of the heavier lifts just don't happen for me anymore. At one point I could bench 225, but not nowadays. Maybe a one-rep set, maybe. But otherwise I'm doing bench with something more like 145 or 155.

After reading this last week, I attempted to do 10 x 10 with 135. I only got to 60 and I was gassed! That kid is a beast!

I know it said arm workout, but I can't fathom curling that much weight.

He's not talking about bench. It's curls, or some other kind of arm workout.

I went back in last night to give it a go with 135 and my arms were like "no. just no." Stupid old man recovery time :(

Ah ha. It was the bench, as we suspected. Also, shiny new layout and code for the official soonersports.com.

I've already penciled in to do one day of Perine's (10x10) ever other week on bench (205 next). I think the most impressive number on that discussion though was a set of 10 with 315 on incline press. Holy beast mode.

If they don't hand that boy the ball 35-40 times a game, they're crazy as road lizards. According to Billy Sims, we've got an Earl Campbell clone on our hands. He'll be gone in two years to the NFL Pros. Let's get on his big, strong back and ride it to a couple more championships.

Junior Running Back Daniel Brooks

"I saw him bench press a car one time in the middle of the night and he tried to act like he didn't do it. He was curling the car too, I think."
