Dayton Flyers - This will be there 7th game in 10 days I believe, but they showed no signs of fatigue last night late in the game. Also thought I heard they started the season with 6 scholarship players. They will definitely have the crowd. They are 18-0 in the state of Ohio.

From what I saw, they are very quick, penetrate to the bucket and kick out for the 3. They did that to Providence who had the size advantage and were able to win. Very sloppy first half. With about 10 minutes left in first half neither team had 10 points. It'll be a tough team. And AGAIN, OU seems to draw the "Cinderella" team...reminds me of the good 'ol Billy days with Skeeter shooting off his pistols after a dunk...lol. Everyone hates OU...

The GOOD is that dewb goitleib WON'T be announcing the game.

I haven't spent enough time on Dayton to post any analysis (I may get to that tonight), but I did hear they are getting ready to play their 7th game in 9 days. I know they're young, and it's the big dance, but the human body can only push through so much. I really expect to see them struggle in the second half tomorrow night. They'll have plenty of (home town) emotion to withstand the first half, but I just don't see them pulling off the upset.

I don't want to speak too soon, but with Villanova going down to NC State, and either Virginia or Michigan State getting eliminated tomorrow, this is shaping up to be a very winnable region for OU.

I'm sure Providence thought the same thing...I guess I'm so use to our up/down...having opportunities blown (Big 12 reg title)...we'll see.

They have nothing to lose, they'll play loose. Hopefully Kruger will go to his bench. Walker just needs to play D when he's out there...know your role.

Just a mention about the next opponent if we get there...msu is up on uva early. Not sure I want msu.

As far as Dayton getting a "home" game, but their 11 seed is either 1-4, I'm guessing Nova was the 2nd #1, since we were probably the 3rd #3. So, again I'm guessing, Dayton was the 3rd #11...just a guess.

Buddy has to shoot it better and continue to get to the basket for easy points and free throws. Woodard needs to get that assist to turnover ration to 2:1 and make mid range jumpers. Cousins has to continue to play strong defense and can't disappear offensively for long stretches. Spangler needs confidence and has to continue to rebound.

ABOVE ALL keep Dayton from going on runs.

I've stated before, that we will need to play very well to come out of this one with a win. Dayton will have the crowd advantage for sure. We can wear them down, but only if we get the kind of bench contributions we had against Albany.

Buddy has to score 20 or more. TT repeat his performance. Guard limit the turnovers.

MSU won, so as it stands, we are the highest remaining seed in the East Region.

It's all laid out for the taking. Let's go get it for a change.

We've had plenty of inside looks. I'm not the biggest fan, of about half of them, because they're ISO drives from the arc, with 4 defenders packed in the lane... no screen (and then still missing layups). Just ISO.

They have good ball movement, which is frustrating... because they don't use it to their advantage. It'll come in, pop back out... then never come back in, except on an ill-advised drive.

That was a little too "fun", my thoughts:

I have to hand it to Lon Kruger, he did an excellent job of keeping the team in check when Dayton looked like they were taking over. He also made a couple of solid adjustments in the second half that forced the Flyers to take shots they didn't want to take. Really solid coaching in this one.

It certainly started out as a blowout. However, Dayton got their second wind (from the crowd I think) and hung around long enough to make the adjustments to get back in the game. They also hit some big time shots (in the second half) or I think it would have been a blow out. We were *so* close to stepping on their throat when we went up 40-37 off of the Woodard lay up. You could just see the life leaving the Dayton players...they were physically exhausted, and if it hadn't been a 'home' game, I think that's when OU would have blown it open. Then, we get a stop and Spangler missed an easy lay-up and Smoochie (that guy is a player) took it back for an easy 2 points. That got the crowd back in, and the Flyers fed off of that.

I think it really sucks that a 3 seed has to play what amounts to a road game. Especially when the 3 is playing an 11 seed. The NCAA really screwed up on that (or, they did it as a reward for Dayton's run last year). Nonetheless, we fought through and got the W. Make no mistake, the crowd had a lot to do with how the game played out.

As for individual players; Frank Booker was the good Frank Booker tonight. When he's on, he's on! Spangler all but disappeared until the very end. Woodard played a really good game with a few bad passing decisions, but that's nitpicking. Thomas wasn't anywhere near as dominate (but I'll address that in a second). The bench actually helped, although only Booker really gave quality minutes (Lattin did a little I suppose).

As for Thomas, I was yelling at the TV, about midway through the first half, that we needed to pound it inside. We had such a mismatch on Thomas, but we didn't really try too hard to play in the paint. Finally, when we got down big in the second half, we started playing inside, and even Buddy drove the lane a couple of times.

For the second game in a row, we had too many stupid turnovers. Lazy basketball. Fortunately, we weathered the storm and it didn't cost us in the end. The only other "negative" (to me anyway) was the lack of playing inside earlier in the game. It also sucked that as hot as we shot in the first half, we almost matched that in misses in the second. Oh well, that's basketball.

Hats off to Dayton. They're a scrappy team that plays well together. It's no wonder they made a big run last year (and were expected by some to do the same after 'Nova went down). It wasn't a pretty win, but it was another win, and when you live by the mantra of "Survive and advance" a win is a win no matter how pretty it may be.

As of right now, it's us and WVU left. WVU has a tall task with Maryland, so it's very possible that OU will carry the conference flag into the Sweet 16.

Things get serious with Michigan State on deck, but they are absolutely beatable. We have a real shot at winning the region, but we definitely need to clean up the sloppy stuff.

I'm going to enjoy this win for a few days...it's been a while since I was able to look forward to watching OU in the second weekend of the tournament. To me, this season has been a big success, regardless of what happens from this point forward.

I started on geez, one of the original Weather Dudes forums. Wish I remembered names from there... but other than GaryMac and sybil... I don't know who else came from there, but it was a long time ago and a lot of forums. I know it was after an initial split of the original forum. I went with the larger group. Then Carey's BoomerSooner.net from pretty much beginning to end. Then SoonerTimes, where I was most years, until a certain someone bought it... then started letting in the real bad haters. The kind I imagine are on this LandThieves (is it really a forum... I should just Google). I think they might have actually been dudes kicked off here.

Well, management decided it didn't like me much anymore and I was sent packing... to end up here.

Sounds like a last resort. LOL! No, I actually enjoy this forum. There's some cliques, but I think everything is mostly in good fun and the real haters are pointed out real fast. Leads to little confusion. Seems the forum does a good job of policing itself and that's actually pretty refreshing to see people given enough rope, to prove they can keep it in check, for the most part.

Yup, I started on the weather guys "Unofficial Sooners" board. I tuned in for the first time when the heat was rising to replace Smellyburger and was pretty much hooked from there. Then also branched out to the "GoBig12" boards, which were insanely vile with filthy ut fans (but that '96 beating of ut on the GoBig12 boards was hands down *the* most fun night I've ever had on a message board), and the official OU live chat page, which was frankly completely awesome and spawned some of the longest-running jokes thanks to "WyandotteWildcat" who hilariously asked "WHY IS THIS CHAT BANING ME!!!" (and thus, getting "baned" was born).

I hadn't thought about all of that for a long time. Thanks for triggering the memory!

I didn't realize he had that many boards. I hadn't looked at the stats when I made my post. He was more active than I realized. It was nice to see him essentially put it away with the dunk at the end. Hopefully that will erase the memory of missing the layup against Iowa State. This one's more important anyway.

I can't hardly believe that Spangler got 12 boards when he can't jump more than 2 inches off the floor. Sure would like to see him elevate like that Maryland white guy does, but that a'int happening, and he's the poster boy for the "white men can't jump" slogan. Love his heart though.
If you told me that we were going to the 16 with Buddy only scoring in the mid-teens and shooting ~ 30% from the field, I would have thought you'd have been drinking the OU FB sports homer kool-aid too long. That block on the the Dayton layup was highlight material, no question.
In any event the whole team plays better when Buddy is on, and it's a credit to them (or perhaps the draw, don't really know which), that we are going to the 16. Wva just took down Maryland, so the Big 12 has 2 in the 16. WVa looked damn good tonight.
What song is he singing there? I'm feeling too lazy to look it up Ride Away. If you don't have that 5.1 dvd of Roy Orbison Live at the Austin City Limits from the early 80s, I would highly recommend it.
If you trans-code the 5.1 to 2 ch wav while making sure the center, sub, and rear L/Rs are mixed correctly with the fronts and then burn it to CD, it's really good for headphone listening. If you're in to compressing the tracks, then trans-code the wav to mp3 with some good freeware like EAC/lame, and it's better than just buying the CD/Dling the mp-3, imo. Don't know if the lame project is still freeware though. I haven't downloaded a new copy of it in years as the price of storage of uncompressed music out-weighs the disadvantages of compressing and storing it, imo.

I hate that Dayton, as an 11 seed, got a home-crowd. I like that the NCAA factors in travel time in order to save money for teams, but don't give an 11 seed an advantage over a 3 seed. A 2 seed like KU going to Omaha is different, and at least they left the state.

Having said that, the officiating wasn't affected, and I don't think the crowd played much of a role in this. The reason this was close is because Archie Miller is one of the top coaches in the country. If Texas was smart, they'd get rid of Barnes, and snatch this guy up. Archie is headed to heights similar to his brother. They're like the Harbaughs of basketball. Thankfully I don't think Texas is that smart.

Unfortunately, despite the fact that I think we just faced one of the top 10 coaches in the country, Lon isn't going to get a break next Friday. In fact, it's going to get even harder, because Izzo is as good as it gets when it comes to the NCAA tournament. Additionally, the talent is also going to improve, although not as much as you would expect from a MSU team. In the same way we needed to improve our Albany performance if we wanted to beat Dayton, we'll need to do better if we want to get by MSU. I'd rate our Albany game at about a C, and Dayton at about a B-. We'll need a B+ on Friday.

It's doable, though. If I were Vegas, I would probably not put a spread on this game.

I'm not going to sacrifice a live chicken or anything like that, but I may get a bird and Bar BQ it on Friday night or maybe eat at KFC once this week.
I really do think that Buddy is due to come out of his shooting funk for 35 or maybe even more, and when he does, we're going to shock some coaches as well as some talking heads. Booker definitely took up some of the slack tonight but I wouldn't count on him to do it consistently when one loss could end the season. It'll be interesting to see what Lon's game plan is for Friday and conversely with Izzo.
I would like to see us at least get one game on broadcast TV for the recruiting hit. No smack on TBS/TNT, as Disney (and the ESPiN stations) have pretty much relegated the local ABC to a crap station especially after FB season. If the colleges are going to be exclusively on the cable/sat spectrum, I don't mind a game being on a Turner Network especially with their Pro-BB talking heads sometimes giving a refreshing outlook on things.

It is impressive that the thread went 12 pages. Maybe we are becoming a legitimate basketball school again. It is good to see students getting excited and it will get better next year. We beat Dayton with defense and I am delighted to make the Sweet Sixteen. It will take a better effort to beat the Spartans, but in the East Region we have a chance to make the Final Four!
