View Full Version : Cheer Up...We Just Won The Lottery

Seriously. We couldn't have imagined a better ending to this season.

Last year, after losing to Texas and getting manhandled by Baylor, it was obvious we needed to make changes. We didn't, though, because Bob miracously pulled off the best three game stretch since 2000. While that run did pull in guys like Mixon and Quick, it kept us from fixing the underlying issues of this program.

That's not the case this year. Disaster struck, and it kept on striking. This program hit the lowest point it has in the Stoops era, and heads will roll.

It's obvious that we aren't developing QB's like we used to, and it's time for Heupel to go. Fortunately, we get to go much deeper than that, though. If we'd had a guy like Sam or JW at QB, we'd probably only have lost one regular season game, and although we still wouldn't be championship caliber, we'd have been good enough that no changes would have been made on the other side of the ball.

Call me a Sunshine Pumper and a Stoops Apologist, but I think we have a lot more reason for optimism right now than we did last year. Changes are coming, and I'm excited.

I don't know whose heads will roll. I doubt anyone with any broad authority. Bob remains prickishly prickish, and he will until the end. These people will remain with heads for sure:

B Stoops
J Heupel
M Stoops

If none of these goes, what big changes can occur? We will enter spring ball with the same coaches, the same players, and the same schemes. Kinda sets the stage for next season. More of the same. Cept we may lose to Tenn and Tex next year as well.

If Bob sticks with all his current assistants, he'll go down with them soon enough. In that scenario, every head rolls.

OU fans sure are different than I remember.

At least we don't have to worry about "Stoops to Florida" any longer...

.....the King was forced out with three NCs under his belt because of a couple of turds on the team, well, there's a couple of turds on this team and Bob is sure as hell no Barry

The offense has a chance to be significantly better next year if the line fills in some spots. Is there any hope for the defense? I thought our D was set to have a great year this year- leading to optimism on my part- but it was the worst Stoops defense ever.

If Sanchez stays healthy, I can't imagine the secondary getting worse, so there's that.

We should return a good number of our main players, but I don't know if that's good.

The D will get better. The light hasn't come on in the secondary yet, but it will. The 2013 group was a pretty good D. But an actual DB coach would be helpful, instead of BJW, and Kish is just a journeyman coach.

The fact that Sanchez is thought of as one of our best defensive players is chilling. It's like praising the best navigator on board the Titanic.

"I'm the King of the Aiiiiiiir Tackellllll..."

Tell that to the OSU guy who still hasn't caught his breath.

Don't pretend he's playing safety.

I don't know how you can be so optimistic. Kids tend to want to go to successful programs. I'm not talking programs with a lot of tradition. I'm talking programs that are winning NOW. Why do you think so many blue chip athletes want to go to Alabama? This year is definitely going to scare some potential recruits off. Kids don't want to be part of a rebuilding program. They want to go to a program where they can win, and win now, and get some exposure to NFL scouts. Do you honestly think this ship will be righted in the next 1 or 2 years. Possible sure, but not likely given Stoops reluctance to fire people. I wish I could share your optimism, but I think we are entering a dark period. Yeah, I know there are bright spots for next year (at least on offense), I'm not so sure about the defense. I just think recruiting is going to take a hit, and continue suffering until the ship gets started down the winning path again. And without quality recruits, even the best coaches in the world can't win.

the turds Switzer had were selling coke, carrying guns...a bit different than Stoops' turds...but agree, he's not Barry. I've enjoyed watching the Sooner Football History series on Fox Oklahoma this past week, brings back a ton of memories.

Thankfully he's not Barry. Otherwise the NCAA would be all over our ***.

I see both sides...I know kids want to win now and go to programs that are winning now. But I also see the brand of OU still being a good sell. The number of guys we put into the NFL. I'd say OU is def a top 10 program still, another yr or two of 7-8-9 wins with others going 10-11-12 wins that will change. Especially if tcu/bu/ksu are the ones winning.

tcu isn't going anywhere next year. They return a lot of guys.

Completely agree. You cant fix what's broken if you don't acknowledge its broken. And its definitely broken

Recruits want to win but they also want to play. OU has shown deficiencies and if a recruit thinks he can fill that void, he'll sign.

We may have "won the lottery", but why do I have this sinking feeling that we are a little old lady at the casino pissing it away on the slot machines?

The D will get better. The light hasn't come on in the secondary yet, but it will.

What light? The one that teaches them how to tackle??? The don't even demonstrate basic fundamentals.

I don't think "won the lottery" means what you think it means.

We have a 1 in 128 chance of winning the national championship, which is a better than most lottery odds. We also have a 4 in 128 chance of making the playoff... a 1 in 10 chance of winning the conference... a 1 in 2 chance of beating the Pokes...

 I think we've been seriously screwed.

I don't think "won the lottery" means what you think it means.

I don't mean it as in we bought a lottery ticket, and are now billionaires.

I mean it as a comparison to the NBA lottery, where you have to strike bottom to have a chance at getting to the top, and being good (as opposed to great) is about the worst thing you can do.

Hooray! :D We won enough games to be eligible for a... :) mid tier Orlando bowl where we will play... :( Clemp who also had a disappointing season and... lose in an embarrassing fashion.

can we have a zombie smiley so we can go lower than

Win the lottery in the NBA and you get Anthony Davis, Andrew Wiggins, Kyrie Irving, etc.

Win the lottery in NCAA and you get Norvell fired, Heupel fired (?), Kish fired (?), BJW retired (?), Mike to take another job (?), etc.

Would it have been worth it for you guys to blowout OSU and UCLA In a bowl game if it kept those changes from happening?

Is it worth it to get swept in the first round of the NBA playoffs and miss out on the Andrew Wiggins sweepstakes?

Eielson

With Norvell and Heupel gone, we have the #1 pick. The questions is, will we pick somebody like Anthony Davis, or somebody like Anthony Bennett?

Josh and Jay definitely were not getting the job done at a championship level of recruiting and player development. But if our defense had been worth a flip, our offense put up enough point to win with the glaring exceptions of Baylor and Clemson. I would have preferred first focus on defensive changes rather than offense. Let's see if that happens.
