That was my first reaction too. But Stoops tends to not embarrass teams with the goose egg unless it's a real foe (OSU 27-0, horns 12-0). If the 3rd team can shut them out in the 4th, it could happen.

We have an inconsistent qb coming in off a hot bowl win and we're breaking in a lot of starters that didn't start last year at the skill positions. Reps reps reps.

Agree for offense. Stoops always want the starting QB to get 3 full quarters regardless. But he's always seemed open to defensive subs earlier if the game is out of hand. I contrast this to Saban who seems to really want shutouts. So

On D, La Tech has some great backs, frankly, but graduated/ran off just about everyone on the line. Skip Holtz is a decent coach and Manny Diaz is trying to salvage his reputation.

I'm thinking we win something like 24-3 and the teeth gnashing will commence as to why we didn't kill them 77-0, similar to what happened last year in the opener and even against WVU in the second game. Plus, Stoops and Co. (and frankly this goes back to the Switzer years) modus operandi is to play down a bit (or up) to the level of competition.

If we win by more than three scores I'll be surprised.

I figured since last year we beat a better ULM team 34-0 with a worse (or not as good as now) Sooner team, we should be able to handle these guys fairly easy. But, comparative logic rarely works out.

But let us not forget: it was 0-0 after the first quarter, and we led only 10-0 right before halftime; and only 13-0 on a last second Hunnicutt field goal at the half.

A 21-point third quarter (with two Knight TD passes) wound up being the difference. That game was closer than it looked.

Also, with a few exceptions, an awful lot of Stoops' teams come out of the gate pretty slowly, prompting much "what is wrong with the Sooners?" commentary for a couple of weeks.

Also, our running game is...unproven...at this point. The OL should make it productive but we just don't know what we've got, yet. I mean, I'd love a 49-0 lead at the half, but I'm not seeing it yet.

Yeah, I'm not certain if that's the commutative property of whoopin' up on someone or the associative property of beatin' down on a team, but I guess that's why the games are played. Just happy that it's around the corner. Tough wincing every time I check the websites, lately...

On the other hand, if this team plays to its potential, it could be real ugly early. But I am guessing the mostly untested running backs and receivers will need some time to get their bearings.
