View Full Version : Traber discussing Gundy on SA

I was listening to the sports animal on my drive home today around 4pm and heard the tail-end of Traber kind of ripping Gundy for something. I never heard what Gundy actually did but Traber kept talking about how much Gundy has changed and how donors could fly him in a private jet to Espnin in Bristol. Does anyone know what this was in regards to? TIA

I think it was about this...

I think he should go to his son's tournament. Besides, does Espn really want to hear him say, I'm a man; I'm 50; pick on me.?

How can you rip a guy for going to his son's ball games?

I dislike OSU as much as the next guy, but I've always thought Gundy was a good man. If this is, in fact, what Traber is ragging on him about, it just solidifies what I already thought about both Gundy and Traber.

....Traber is an idiot....he proves it everyday

Because he's surly to the media, even moreso than Stoops. And this Espin thing is kinda good for promoting your program. So in summation, Although it's for the kids, Gundy comes off as a jerk.

Gundy can go later. No need for him to do exactly what every other coach is doing. Plus it's not like osu is coming off an 0-10-1 season or anything.

Hey, it's osu if they didn't show up do you think anybody would notice?

There shouldn't be an issue with what Coach Gundy has chosen to do. I'm certain most readers feel likewise. Shame on Traber for even bringing this up. If being different means putting your priorities first, then so be it. Kudos to Gundy for being a Dad..

I read that he also cAnceled on an alum pro golfer's event for kids baseball so it wasn't just espn

Actually Traber didn't rip him. He simply said there's no reaso he couldn't go to ESPN and then take a private jet to see his son ball.

He is making over $3 million to be the figure head of osu football, his son plays around 50 games a summer, he should have gone to espn. Gundy has turned into a brat the last few years and it seems to have all started over him not having control over scheduling.

And before someone says that family is bigger than sports, I completely agree. But in this case, it seems as if he is using it to avoid going because he doesnt want to do what his bosses want him to do

You all dont think Stoops 3 kids dont have something going on? I am sure most of these coaches have something they could be at for their kids

I'm pretty sure Bob puts his family first in everything. He's been taking his kids to school everyday since they were old enough to go. I don't know if any of them play sports, but if it's not during football season I'm sure he's there.

I will say that $3 million a year (and access to a private jet) does make it hard to understand. Surely he could have taken the plane afterward.

Can you expand on why you think Gundy has turned into a brat the last few years? How has he changed?

I've always thought he was surprisingly good in interviews which wasn't expected because I heard first hamd stuff about how mouthy he was as an assistant.
I think how he's shut out the media as of late has lead to the criticism.

Let me end this for the sake of society.

Gundy is a ****** bag. But he's a decent coach, doing a decent job at a very demanding position.

Traber is a hired jester whose schtick if to make an *** of himself. He's successful at that, but, frankly, is lucky to be paid more than table scraps from our dinner plates.

True. I heard he ate lunch at his daughter's school pretty much every day a few years ago. Not sure if he's continued with this as she's no longer in elementary school but he was a regular at her school back when she was younger.

I think Gundy's unparalleled OSU success gives him leeway to skip or postpone these media appearances that other coaches make. If it was another program that isn't as used to attending bowl games and actually winning the conference, then there might be pressure to do everything to right the ship and win... but Gundy has a very long leash there, even with all the Gooner losses :P

Funny little story here.
I hung out with some college buddies in the early 90's and a few of them worked for Anheiser Busch. They would get tickets to everyhting around Tulsa and the arena football games were included.
We were at a game one time and at halftime they had the football throw through the blow up thingy.
This dude comes out and throws a laser some 30 yards right through the hole. Well it was Gundy. I think he was coaching at Maryland or had been fired from somewhere but he grabs the mic and starts walking around yelling "OSU!"
Yeah, it was funny.

When he was coming out of highschool (MWC), Sooner fans would have loved to have Mike sign with OU since anyone around then will attest, there was constant pressure on Barry to "throw the damn ball more" even though all The King ever did was win over 80% of all games running the wishbone and a few conference and National titles along the way.

It was rather satisfying when Cale came to OU instead of following older brother to . . . little brother.

Apparently Gumby addressed the media today at the B12 media days. Seemingly his meds needs adjustment, again, as his comments included something to the effect that after ten years at OSU, he felt like Britney Spears.
Now, I admit that I didn't drill down to see what sort of logic he was applying to arrive at that destination. I simply registered a "WTF?" and moved on.

As a person in the baseball scene in Oklahoma, I know that Gundy's boys play at a very high level of baseball and I have seen him at many a tourney in the OKC area and elsewhere. in fact, I've seen him coaching first base, dealing with all of the cell phone cameras, autograph seekers, etc.. He is very into his boys' sports, that's for sure.

But, even with that, I cannot imagine that his employers were too excited that he was skipping this ESPN opportunity, especially since every other major program will be there. Surely, he could do both, but I really have no idea. As far as I'm concerned, if it's OK with the powers at OSU, then it's really not anyone else's issue.

Personally, I don't care. If it was Bob doing it, I would feel the same way.

by the way, Gundy apparently offered to pretape some stuff for segments for ESPN rather than appear live and ESPN declined (http://www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/osu/football/osu-sports-for-gundy-no-car-wash-and-no-golf/article_0d844a87-5f3a-5582-a445-edba17d656f4.html). So it's on ESPN that Gundy's not on this week, not Gundy. He probably would have done phone with them too but I suppose being the worldwide leader in sports means you can make demands

If you are asking seriously, I think most of what you hear in the media is true. He isnt getting along with the higher ups for various reasons but rather than act like a professional who makes a lot of loot to do so

And is extremely lucky to do so as the product he creates is crap.

Look at it this way: If I made Ford Pinto's and sold boat loads of them, I'd make lots of money. And I'd still be making Ford Pinto's.

Precisely.

That line of reasoning "it sells therefore it is good" explains McDonald's.

They may sell billions but it is still crap

Traber is like McDonald's.

Popular and just a really awful product.

He's the gift that keeps on giving.

I don't think I've seen the word "blunt" mentioned this many times in an arrest report in a long time (http://www.tulsaworld.com/view-justin-blackmon-s-arrest-report-here/pdf_f34d360c-6256-5ec5-9703-c2eca8773a21.html).

The driver
explained that he had been smoking a “blunt” of marijuana while he was driving and a full “blunt” was contained
within a box of Swisher Sweets. I then escorted the driver to my patrol car where he was secured within the
prisoner compartment. Once seated, I asked for his identity at which time the driver identified himself as Mr.
Justin C. Blackmon with a date of birth of January 9th, 1990.
With Mr. Blackmon secured within my patrol car, I conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle with the
assistance of Officer Aaron London. In the front seat of the vehicle, I located an open water bottle placed in a cup
holder. Contained within the bottle were the remnants of the “blunt” Mr. Blackmon had admitted to smoking. In
the rear map pocket of the front passenger seat, I located the box of “Swisher Sweets” which contained a freshly
rolled “blunt”. Examining the “blunt,” I observed that it contained a green leafy substance which too had an odor
of marijuana. I seized the bottle with the smoked “blunt” as well as the box of “Swisher Sweets” and secured
them within the trunk of my car.
