Coming off an upset of Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, expectations for the Oklahoma Sooners are sky-high heading into the 2014 season – just ask Blake Bell. According to The Oklahoman , Bell was asked what his expectations are for the 2014 Sooners at a Sooner Caravan event in his hometown, Wichita, Kansas. His answer: “National Championship.” The 6-foot-6, 252-pound Bell, a senior, made the transition from quarterback to tight end this offseason. He started eight games at quarterback for the Sooners last season, but sophomore Trevor Knight emerged as the quarterback of the future for the Sooners with an electrifying 348 yards and four touchdowns in the Sugar Bowl victory. With the momentum from the Sugar Bowl, the return of Knight and the majority of the Sooners’ defense that wreaked havoc against Alabama back as well, contending for a national championship is certainly not out of the question. A favorable schedule that features only five true road games (Tulsa, West Virginia, TCU, Iowa State and Texas Tech) gives the Sooners a very realistic shot to earn one of the four spots in the inaugural College Football Playoff. Of course, getting past Baylor and Oklahoma State in the Big 12 won’t be easy, but having those games at home certainly helps. As far as Bell is concerned, he has shown his athletic ability throughout his career with 24 combined rushing touchdowns. How much he will contribute in his transition to tight end is still a question mark.* Bell missed a portion of spring practice with a knee sprain . The injury caused him to miss the Sooners’ spring game in April, so we won’t get to see Bell lined up at tight end in game action until the season opener against Louisiana Tech on August 30. “I’m just kinda taking it a little slower right now. I’ve been actually out there doing rehab and starting workouts and stuff. I can’t wait to get out there and start playing again, too,” Bell said . Before the injury, head coach Bob Stoops said that Bell “looked good” in practice.
