The yearly showdown between Oklahoma and Texas, better known as the Red River Rivalry, will continue being played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas through 2025, according to the Dallas Morning News . The deal was formally announced by Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings on Tuesday. Dallas civic leader Pete Schenkel said that the two school’s boards of trustees still have to officially approve the deal, but “both athletic departments have signed off on the agreement” to continue playing at the State Fair of Texas. “The schools appreciate the venue,” Schenkel, who reportedly led the negotiations between the city and State Fair, said. “It’s more of an event that it is a game.” Per the Morning News, each school will split the ticket revenue and receive $500,000 each for playing the game in Dallas. More importantly, the game won’t follow other games (like the Cotton Bowl’s postseason game) changing venues to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, the home of the Dallas Cowboys. “Dallas is committed to ensuring the game stays here at Fair Park well beyond 2025,” Rawlings said. “Dallas, Texas, is the home of the Red River Rivalry.” Oklahoma and Texas have played each other at Fair Park since 1929. Texas leads the all-time series 46-35-1. The previous deal extended through 2020 as long as stadium upgrades were completed. Those upgrades, which the city of Dallas spent $57 million on, included 16,000 additional seats and a new scoreboard in 2008. Then in 2012, the city spent an additional $25 million “to polish up the amenities.” After the Sooners had won three straight from 2010-2012, the Longhorns upset the No. 12 Sooners last season, 36-20. - - - - - - - Sam Cooper is a contributor for the Yahoo Sports blogs.
