Oklahoma Leaders Respond To Plans To House Illegal Immigrants At Fort Sill

Governor Mary Fallin said she got word of this decision from the President on Friday, and it's sparking more debate on how to handle immigration.

OKLAHOMA CITY - Hundreds of children who came to the U.S. illegally from Central America are expected to be coming to Fort Sill in Lawton as early as Tuesday.
Governor Mary Fallin said she got word of this decision from the President on Friday, and it's sparking more debate on how to handle immigration. It could cost around $250 per child per day that they're housed on base.

Some Oklahoma Congressmen have already come against the housing plan, expressing concern for how long it will last and at what cost.

Fort Sill is to house anywhere from 600 to 1,200 minors according to the Governor's Office. The majority of the minors are between 13 and 17 years old, who illegally crossed the southern border of the country.

"They're certainly fleeing from a challenging life, no question about that, but if the United States accepts everybody in the world who is fleeing from a challenging life then we're going to essential have no border policy," said Congressman Tom Cole (R).

Cole says the United States already accepts more illegal immigrants than any country in the world. He says he is disappointed that no one in Congress was briefed about Fort Sill plan and the Governor was blind sided even though the President put the order out on June 2nd.

"This is a very inappropriate use for a military facility. It's not what they're designed to do," said Cole. "They're not supposed to be juvenile detention centers. It is going to detract from resources that should be devoted to our American service men and women."

Former Oklahoma State Senator and retired Army Lt. Col. Steve Russell says this will place a big strain on the military.

"Now we will have soldiers who will be required to go away from the training of new artillery and dealing with a whole range of issues which they will perform what they are told, but it is going to be a stressful time at Fort Sill," said Russell.

Russell likens the current situation to the mass Cuban exodus of 1994 and to the Mariel Harbor boat lift in 1980.

"Not to say that all Americans might not be sympathetic or have some notion of humanity, but in the case of Cubans at Fort Chaffee in 1980, it took a fair amount of time, some were sent back to Cuba, others were allowed to become citizens."

Attorney David Slane handles immigration cases and was a soldier at Ft. Hood at the time when the massive wave of Haitian immigrants came for refuge.

"After seeing the Haitian riots, it was disruptive to everything going on the base and I don't think we were equipped to handle that," said Slane. "But now, that I handle so many of these immigration cases, some of the conditions on a military post may be better than if they were returned to their country."

The unaccompanied children will also be placed at bases throughout the nation, including ones in Texas, California and New York.

Congressman Cole says he will have a briefing on Monday with the Department of Human Services, which will cover a majority of the expense.

The number of minors who illegally immigrate to the U.S. is expected to rise to 66,000 this year and to 127,000 by next year.

Authorities have arrested 47,017 unaccompanied children on the southern border from October through May, up 92 percent from the same period a year earlier. A draft Border Patrol memorandum estimates that number could reach 90,000 in the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, up from a previous government estimate of 60,000. [Full Story]

Watched the bleeding-hearts on CNN this morning saying we "have to take care of the children.". Well, how about their folks don't send them from Central America by themselves?
Don't take that wrong - I have kids & grandkids of my my own, but no way in hell I'd turn them over to a coyote to take them thousands of miles and then dump them in a country where they don't speak the language.

If you were a Jew in Nazi Germany, would you send your kids out of the country with strangers, if that were the only way to give them a chance at safety?

Granted there are differences, but most human beings put their kids' safety ahead of everything else.

It may be best for the kids but it isn't the US responsibility to accept them. Easiest solution is don't let them in and make Mexico provide for them...They'll seal up their southern border very quickly.

Sorry, that's the "let the US fix the rest of the world" solution.

I thought we were talking about the choices open to parents in the war zone, not what the US response should be.

If we do let these kids stay, that's a helluva a lot better than sending in troops (the usual way we try to "fix the world"). I'm very much against the latter.

Texas Poll: Most Favor Swift Deportation of Illegal Immigrants

Wednesday, 18 Jun 2014 09:36 AM
By Melanie Batley

With hundreds of undocumented immigrants streaming across the Texas border every day, over half of Texans say the United States should deport them immediately, a new poll has found.

In the University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll conducted May 30-June 8 of 1,200 adults, 54 percent of respondents said they "agree" or "somewhat agree" that people who illegally cross the border should be removed from the country immediately.

Forty percent of those surveyed say they "disagree" or "somewhat disagree" with swift deportation.

The poll, which has a margin of error of 2.8 percent, also found that 73 percent agree that "we should restrict and control people coming to live in the U.S. more than we do now."

Nevertheless, 60 percent say that newcomers from other countries "enrich Texas with their hard work and values."

"This tells us a lot about the continuing power of immigration and border politics in Texas," Jim Henson, co-director of the poll and head of the Texas Politics Project at UT-Austin, told The Texas Tribune.

Republicans were much more likely to take a hard-line approach to immigration issues than Democrats. Seventy-four percent of GOP voters support the idea of deportation, compared to 32 percent of Democrats. Among those who identified themselves as tea party supporters, 85 percent said they believed in immediate deportation.

"The harder-line conservatives have shifted this issue by the way they have talked about this issue," said Daron Shaw, a professor of government at the University of Texas at Austin and co-director of the poll, according to the Tribune. "The majority of Republican sentiment is moving in a more conservative direction in Texas."

The survey also looked at whether illegal immigrants should be eligible for in-state college tuition. Again, Republicans and Democrats came down on opposite sides of the issue.

Fifty-four percent of Democrats say undocumented immigrant students should be eligible for in-state college tuition, compared to 58 percent of Republicans who say they should pay higher, out-of-state rates.

On taxes, only 34 percent of Texas voters agree that "most immigrants pay their fair share of taxes," compared to 56 percent who disagree, the poll found.
